a very preliminary lme for R
Jose and I have a version of the lme (linear mixed effects) library
that is known to work with at least one example on at least one
version of R on at least one computer so that means it is time to
upload to CRAN, right?
In the near future a file lme_2.8-0.tar.gz will appear in the
src/contrib/devel area under CRAN. Please remember this is a snapshot
of the development version. We know there

lme_2.9-2.tar.gz available soon on CRAN
I recently uploaded a new version of the lme contributed library to
the main CRAN site. It should be available on mirrors within the next
24 hours.
This version matches the beta version of NLME 3.0 for S-PLUS. It only
provides methods for linear mixed-effects models in R so it is called
lme rather than nlme. The other big thing that is missing in the R
version is all the graphics because they

Result depends on order of factors in unbalanced designs (lme, anova)?
Dear R-Community!
For example I have a study with 4 treatment groups (10 subjects per group) and 4 visits. Additionally, the gender is taken into account. I think - and hope this is a goog idea (!) - this data can be analysed using lme as below.
In a balanced design everything is fine, but in an unbalanced design there are differences depending on fitting y~visit*treat*gender or

Translating lme code into lmer was: Mixed effect model in R
This question comes up periodically, probably enough to give it a proper
thread and maybe point to this thread for reference (similar to the
'conservative anova' thread not too long ago).
Moving from lme syntax, which is the function found in the nlme package,
to lmer syntax (found in lme4) is not too difficult. It is probably
useful to first explain what the differences are between the

Dear Douglas Bates. I just downloaded the compiled version (I'm a poor Windows devil, not yet having found the time to move to a more advanced platform...) from NT- the files are dated 30.5-1999 so they are not old - and the problem persisted....wonder what I did wrong ?

the function lme in package nlme
Dear people,
A somewhat clueless question follows:
I just discovered that the lme function in contrib package nlme for R,
while similar to the lme function in Splus, does not use the cluster
function option. This difference does not appear to be documented in the
V&R `R Complements' file.

Help with lme basics
In Baron and Li's "Notes on the use of R for psychology experiments and questionnaires" http://cran.r-project.org/doc/contrib/rpsych.htm they describe a balanced data set for a drug experiment:
"... a test of drug treatment effect by one between-subject factor: group (two groups of 8 subjects each) and two within-subject factors: drug (2 levels) and dose (3 levels). "

Sorry to bring up this old topic again but ...
The 2.0 release of Debian Linux is about to happen and the release
team requires copyright statements on any code included in the
release. Presently there are 4 packages that I have created from R
source code and libraries and contributed to the release. I think
this will help with the visibility of R when there is a well-regarded

Repeated Measures design using lme
Hi,
I have what I believe is a repeated-measures dataset that I'm trying to analyze using lme(). This is *not* homework, but an exercise in my trying to self-teach myself repeated-measure ANOVA for other *real* datasets that I have and that are extremely similar to the following design.
I'm fairly sure the dataset described below would work with lme() -- but it'd be great if anybody

Function to Sort and test AIC for mixed model lme?
Hi List
I'm running a series of mixed models using lme, and I wonder if there
is a way to sort them by AIC prior to testing using anova
(lme1,lme2,lme3,....lme7) other than by hand.
My current output looks like this.
anova
(lme.T97NULL.ml,lme.T97FULL.ml,lme.T97NOINT.ml,lme.T972way.ml,lme.T97fc.

Can't get installing a package source (.tar.gz) from a web page to work...
I have created an R-package with datasets which I want my students to install (the package is not on CRAN).
1) I've put the package on the web in a directory called 'data' and I thought I could do:
