R alpha/beta naming
Read this morning >>> R : Copyright 1998, Robert Gentleman and Ross Ihaka >>> Version 0.61.2 Alpha (March 15, 1998) ----- So, there still is no "R beta" around.... - If I didn't know R, would I use a statistics software, if it was still in alpha testing state? - Is this really what we want to tell people about R? More to the point: I think, we could

R-beta: image
Questions on image: 1) How can I put labels on the x and y axes? 2) How to tell it to use e.g. 32 grey levels (not some colour map)? 3) How to know what the legend is (i.e. each grey level = what z value)? Thanks very much for any help. BTW I was wondering if persp was on the To Do list. That would be great! Bill Simpson

R-alpha: NA in data frame not detected
NA's in a data frame are not handled properly, if the data frame was read in using read.table (but I'm not sure if that is the reason of the problems): (I'm using Debian Linux 1.3) If I read the file *************** 1 2 2 3 3 4 4 5 ? 6 6 7 7 8 8 9 *************** into R using read.table I run into troubles: R : Copyright 1997, Robert Gentleman and Ross Ihaka Version 0.49 Beta

R-alpha: Postscript bug ...
Jeez I dunno - it compiles perfectly and you guys get excited just because it doesn't work :-) I have to admit to being baffled about what happened (I'm SURE this was working not long ago), but here is a quick fix. The problem is in the function "GetCharInfo" in the file src/unix/PostScript.c. The fix is to change the statement if(nchar < 0) return 0; to if(nchar <

R-alpha: R-0.49: 2 problems
I found the following 2 problems (no debugging, sorry). * qt(0.975, 3) never returns. Can someone please check that? Happens for me on Debian GNU/Linux/ix86 compiled with CFLAGS="-O2 -g". * Yet another stupid way to cause a segfault: R> x Error: Object "x" not found R> debug(t.test) R> t.test(rnorm(10)) debug: choices <- c("two.sided",

R-alpha: help files of base package
[this message bounced, because it had 'help' at beginning of Subject. Now sent as "approved". -- MM] I'm not happy at all with the html and latex version of the base help files, because presenting (currently) 320 files in alphabetic order is not a good way for unexperienced users. I'm thinking about introducing a new command like \category or whatever to split the

fecha primera versión de R
Muy interesante. Gracias Carlos. Estaba indagando en los orígenes, más que nada como referencia en un documento, pero dan ganas de probar la R 0.49. Creo que la primera que instalé fue R 1.2.0, en un curso que dieron en la universidad allá por el 2000. ¿y vosotros? Saludos El 13/06/13 15:12, Carlos J. Hi, I'm a beginner of R. I find it absoluty fantastic, flexible and very extensible. For the moment only a curiosity.. Why the name R? (are they perhaps the initials of Robert Gentleman and Ross Ihaka?, or is the name correlated with S language?) Sorry for my poor question but I am very curious Thank in advance Paolo C.

Gentleman and Ihaka's integrity in question
It does look like Gentleman and Ihaka not only lied to the New York Times, but also to the New Zealand Herald and who knows who else. This is disgusting. The R programming language is the S programming language, and Gentleman and Ihaka are not the ones who designed it. http://thenewyorktimesissloppy.blogspot.com/
