last version of puppetd that will work with ruby 1.6.8 (RHEL3)
Hello...
What is the last version of puppet that will work with ruby version
1.6.8? I have a few RHEL 3 machines I would like to run puppetd (only
the client, not puppetmaster). They will be updated to RHEL 5 fairly
soon, so I don''t want to spend a lot of time trying to get a more recent
version of ruby on them.

"warning: Could not get config; using cached copy" error with latest puppet release
I''m receiving a "warning: Could not get config; using cached copy" when
running "puppetd --test" with the latest puppet and puppet-server RPMs
from dlutter''s site.
Has anyone else seen this problem or can give me an idea of where to
start looking for the problem?

Does Puppet ensure that a service is up and running?
Just curious as to the functionality of puppet. Does Puppet ensure that a service is up and running as long as puppet is running?
Ie, I want to make sure ssh is always running, if for some reason ssh get''s shut down, does puppet start it back up when it does it''s config sync run?
Thanks!

Best Practice: how to organize puppetmaster directories?
Hi,
While puppet creates its own directories for internal stuff (puppetca,
state, etc.), there''s a fair bit of latitude given to where things like
manifests and uploaded files live. I didn''t get much guidance from the
docs when I first set things up so I mostly poked at things until the
worked. Take a look at the following and let me know if this looks
reasonable; if so, it

Best practice: how to set up mountpoints?
Hi,
[Note: I''ve been saving up my puppet questions for a free moment so
pardon my bombardment of the list]
What''s the best way to set up mounts and mountpoints with puppet?
I am currently using something like:
----
class software_depot_client {
# create NFS mountpoint
file { "/mnt/nfs/repository":
path => "/mnt/nfs/repository",

puppetmasterd file handle problem
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
Hi all,
I''m running the latest version of puppet (debian 0.22.4-2), and I''ve
gotten to a point with my configuration where puppetmasterd needs to be
restarted every few days due to what seem like file handles not getting
closed.
I either see this set of errors:

"Parsed Providers must define a default target" error
I''ve just noticed that Puppet is failing to automatically apply changes
when running as a Red Hat service.
Changes get applied with no problems or errors when I run Puppet
manually with "puppetd --test" but fail with a "Could not apply complete
configuration: Parsed Providers must define a default target" error in
/var/log/messages when the service runs automatically

problem with puppetmasterd log
Hello,
puppetmasterd is running as shown here:
puppet 10209 1.1 1.5 138124 62532 ? Ssl 13:37 0:06
/usr/bin/ruby /usr/sbin/puppetmasterd
--manifest=/etc/puppet.production/manifests/site.pp
--logdest=/var/log/puppet.production/puppetmasterd.log
however, the log file is not being updated with information when a
client runs puppetd --test
Am I missing something obvious?

Anyone using Puppet to manage Red Hat Network registrations?
Before I start working on it, I''d like to check if anyone is already
using Puppet to manage their servers'' RHN subscriptions.
We run a local RHN Proxy server and at the moment, I''m using Kickstart
to:
- Install Facter and Puppet
- Install our organisations trusted RHN SSL certificate
- Download and install our RHN configuration file
- Import GPG keys
- Run rhnreg_ks to

Using a different port for puppetmasterd?
Is there a way of specifying the server on a different port? I want
to be able to change between two different puppetmasterd''s on the
same box, and I want to pick between them by using selecting the
port.
There seems to be lots of :port* symbols floating around, and a
--port in puppetd, but it''s not looking consistent. Is this
something on the TODO path, or is there a

Anyone using storeconfigs with a DB other than sqlite?
Just wondering if anyone is using a backend database other than sqlite,
and if so, how easy/hard it was to configure.
I''m constantly receiving "SQLite3::BusyException: database is locked..."
which I presume is due to sqlite''s relatively coarse locking method.
Cheers,

reload/restarting puppetd after puppet.conf change
Subject basically says it all. Anyone have a good idea of how to get
puppetd restarted after installing a updated puppet.conf? Using the
Service types obviously doesn''t work since puppet is already running.
Is there no, please reload your config on the next run option? I mean
there is always some screwing with a cronjob to just restart puppet once
and awhile but I dunno I was

Installing a file only if a package is available
Hi,
is there a way to make sure a file is installed only if a certain
package is installed on the client?
e.g. I want to distribute the client key for NX via puppet. However I
only want to install these files if package ''freenx'' is installed on the
client.
I tried adding ''require => package["freenx"]'' but then puppetd complains

puppetd dies?
Greetings all,
My deployment of puppet includes a monitrc to make sure that puppetd stays
up and running. It seems like (across all of my hosts) that pupeptd will
end up dying and restarted by monit. I''m running puppetd under a screen
session now on one particular host with --debug --verbose to see if any
thing comes out on console but until it happens again, any anybody else

memory leak in puppetd?
I have a cluster of 20 or so machines. On many of the nodes, the
puppetd process take up a ton of resident memory (> 400MB RES in top,
> 500GB VIRT in top) after running for a while (> 1 week). The only
thread I found on this was titled "memory leak?" and last updated on
06-Dec-2007. The question on that tread was whether or not the
memory was buffered memory. I

Puppetrun denied by puppetd
Hi,
I have a Gentoo server running puppetmasterd from Puppet 0.24.1 and a
Ubuntu server running puppetd from Puppet 0.23.2.
I have added listen=true to the [puppetd] section on the client and run
puppetd --debug. I then run puppetrun --debug --host hostname on the
puppetmaster server. This is the output I get:
Puppetmaster:
# puppetrun --debug --host hostname
Failed to load ruby LDAP library.

scaling up puppetmasterd by cloning puppetmasterd
I apologized ahead of time if this post shouldn''t go here but I having
been knocking my heading for the last two days trying to get over the
following error while trying to "clone" my primary puppetmasterd
because we have outgrown one puppetmasterd setup.
I have basically set up a 2nd instance of our primary puppetmasterd
and rsync''ed over /var/lib/puppet/ssl/ from the
