probably running puppet on red hat for the first time
Here at the University of Sydney I''m trying to give Puppet a go. I haven''t made it past first base yet unfortunately. We run RHEL 4 here, for the most part, and the install guide at http://reductivelabs.com/trac/puppet/wiki/InstallationGuide says that you should use the vendor''s Ruby, but Red Hat''s current version of Ruby is 1.8.1-07 - is this new

Does Puppet ensure that a service is up and running?
Just curious as to the functionality of puppet. Does Puppet ensure that a service is up and running as long as puppet is running? Ie, I want to make sure ssh is always running, if for some reason ssh get''s shut down, does puppet start it back up when it does it''s config sync run? Thanks! --------------------------------- Pinpoint customers who are looking for

anyone have 0.23.2-1 puppet and puppet-server rpms for rhel4 & 5?
I just upgraded from 0.23.2-1 on RHEL 4&5 to 0.24.1-1. I used Dlutter''s repository. What a mess I''m in now. Anyway to make a long story short I moved all of the old configs out of the way (/etc/puppet, /var/lib/puppet) and started over with a fresh install. I can''t get puppetd on the server to request a cert. If I do a "puppetd -v --waitforcert 90" the

New rpms for lockdir problem
I just built new puppet rpm''s for Fedora (puppet-0.22.1-2) that fix the lockdir problem that many of you have encountered. The packages should show up on a mirror near you very soon. Unfortunately, I am having trouble getting to my buildsystem that I use for the RHEL versions of the RPM; I made the source rpm available on my people page[1] If you need the RPM for RHEL, you need to

puppetd 0.24.0 on Centos 4.5
Hi, I was managing a bunch of Centos 4.5 with Puppet until the ruby security patch bit me creating ssl problems. As I''m not able/willing to patch the installed version I tried upgrading to dlutter''s 0.24.0-2.el5 version. Unfortunately this didn''t help much. So I removed the server and client installation completely (making sure to manually remove the config, ssl, ...

Tunnelling Puppet over SSH
I work at a large financial institution (AXA) and we have a large number of DMZs for our partner and internet-facing servers. The only access to the various DMZs is via SSH and no DMZ-initiated connections are allowed back to the internal network. I''d consider putting a Puppet server in the DMZ but no communication is allowed between DMZs either. Has anyone tried tunnelling Puppet

Switching to mongrel
I made an attempt to switch to mongrel today and I''m running into a strange error message I can''t seem to track down: debug: puppetmaster: Setting servertype to ''mongrel'' Server is not a class Tracing through with the debugger shows: [snip] /foo/lib/gems/puppet-0.22.4/bin/puppetmasterd:248: case Puppet[:servertype] (rdb:1) n

"Parsed Providers must define a default target" error
I''ve just noticed that Puppet is failing to automatically apply changes when running as a Red Hat service. Changes get applied with no problems or errors when I run Puppet manually with "puppetd --test" but fail with a "Could not apply complete configuration: Parsed Providers must define a default target" error in /var/log/messages when the service runs automatically

Installing a file only if a package is available
Hi, is there a way to make sure a file is installed only if a certain package is installed on the client? e.g. I want to distribute the client key for NX via puppet. However I only want to install these files if package ''freenx'' is installed on the client. I tried adding ''require => package["freenx"]'' but then puppetd complains it

Anyone using storeconfigs with a DB other than sqlite?
Just wondering if anyone is using a backend database other than sqlite, and if so, how easy/hard it was to configure. I''m constantly receiving "SQLite3::BusyException: database is locked..." which I presume is due to sqlite''s relatively coarse locking method. 0.20.1 and sqlite3 error
Hello, I just installed the latest version of puppet and puppetmaster on an up to date RHEL4 system. If I turn on ''storeconfigs'' on the puppetmaster server I get the following error: debug: Calling puppetmaster.getconfigerr: Could not retrieve configuration: Uncaught exception No such file to load -- sqlite3 in method puppetmaster.getconfig I have gems and rails installed

Lock file /var/lib/puppet/state/puppetdlock
I''m just starting a roll out of Puppet and I''m seeing a problem on maybe 25% of client nodes. The symptoms are that the clients stop updating. In the Puppetmaster log, I''m seeing things like: Feb 9 20:10:23 vs4 puppetmasterd[17942]: Compiled catalog for xxxx in 0.05 seconds Feb 9 20:40:41 vs4 puppetmasterd[17942]: Compiled catalog for xxxx in 0.05 seconds Feb 9

reload/restarting puppetd after puppet.conf change
Subject basically says it all. Anyone have a good idea of how to get puppetd restarted after installing a updated puppet.conf? Using the Service types obviously doesn''t work since puppet is already running. Is there no, please reload your config on the next run option? I mean there is always some screwing with a cronjob to just restart puppet once and awhile but I dunno I was

Standalone puppet (i.e. no server) config
Hi, I''m new to puppet and having difficultly setting it up the way I want to (which is a little different from the norm I''d say). What I''m trying to achieve is to have a automatic build of debian (etch at the moment) using debian installer that installs a minimal system including puppet using the debian package puppet (not puppetmaster). As part of the initial setup

New error in Centos 5.1
Just started a "pilot" puppet server for real after messing around in VMs for the past week or so... I used the 0.24.0 since it was available, and on the test run, got this: err: Could not prefetch package provider ''yum'': Execution of ''/usr/bin/python /usr/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.8/puppet/provider/package/yumhelper.py'' returned 512: /usr/bin/python:

problem with remotefile definition
Hi, I''m exploring Puppet and have hit a rather weird problem. The puppetmaster server is running CentOS4, fully updated, with puppet installed from the dlutter RPM repo, version 0.20.0-1.el4. I tried adding the remotefile function definition from http://reductivelabs.com/projects/puppet/documentation/installation.html in /etc/puppet/manifests/utils/remotefile.pp but when I start

Puppet uses too much RAM memory
Hello, I have two Vmware images, with 256MB of RAM memory each one, running puppetmasterd for the server and puppetd for the client. It''s normal that my puppetmasterd and puppetd occupies almost 10% of RAM memory each one? They aren''t doing anything especial, just listening on the ports. Thanks.

bringing puppet into production
Hi everyone, I’ve been working on getting puppet set up for our systems for the past week, and all has gone well in learning about writing manifests, but now that I’m ready to set it into production, I realize that it’s still unclear to me exactly how that’s supposed to go. For instance, during testing it has always been that I manually started and stopped puppetd and puppetmasterd on their
