odd steam install location?
I am trying to track down a crash in Steam (Steam itself, not a game
through it). In following appdb instructions for Steam I realized that
it was installed in
/home/tparker/.local/share/wineprefixes/steam/drive_c/Program
Files/Steam/steam.exe and not in :~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files> where I
had expected it, although that second directory does have a
SteamInstall.msi sitting in it but

Unhandled exception launching games from Steam
So after years of running a 'pure' Linux machine, I finally decided to install Wine so I could play some of my old games - and it's been a disaster. Using either Wine 1.5.3 or 1.3.3 trying to launch Half-Life Source results in nothing happening, trying to launch from the commandline gives this stack trace:
Code:

Steam Installation Errors
Hey guys, I'm sure that this question has already been answered. If so, could someone direct me to the answer. The problem is that, steam.exe cannot access the Internet. My Internet service is fine, and I have not had any problems with steam accessing the Internet in the past. The problem only started a few days ago, and I am not sure what the cause is. I have tried basically everything. I

Hello,
Ubuntu newb here. I loaded some games onto my laptop that has a fresh copy of Ubuntu 11.04 and they worked flawlessly with wine. I am now trying to get steam to work. I downloaded it through their website and opened the file through wine/winetricks and it will update and log in to my account, but once it logs in it just closes. No ghost window, update tab or anything. I've

Steam installs and runs fine on POL, but not Wine ?
Hey guys,
Can anyone help me close the gap between my POL and Wine setups? I currently have a laptop running PlayOnLinux 3.8.8 and a desktop running only Wine 1.3.9 (Fedora 14).
As the subject read, the laptop with POL is running fine, but a generic install with the latest .msi file from the Steam website is not.
Steam on Wine, was able to run it's own autoupdate, but after that refuses

Secret of Monkey Island SE, steam on wine, crashes on start
I'm wondering if anyone can help me?
I'm trying to run Secret of Monkey Island special edition in Steam on wine with Ubuntu Maverick Meerkat. I can install steam and use it to install the game (after it installs directx), apparently with no problems, but when I try to run the game, a window opens saying "Preparing to launch The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition". Ubuntu (Wubi) + Wine + Steam
Does it work?
I've been trying to set up Steam under Wine for two days now but to no avail, I've got the Tahoma font, the Gecko engine and also tried with the .exe and .msi and nothing :(
Using this guide (http://thepemberton.com/posts/archives/13), when I have to type "wine SteamInstall.exe -dxlevel 90 -novid" on the terminal all I get is this:

Re: [1.3.22]Steam "F.E.A.R. 3"-Crashes On Start-Here I
Did you tried to launch the game directly with Steam ?
Tried to install d3dx9 with winetricks ?
It's strange that you can play at this game because on Steam, the game will unlock only the 06/24/2011... : http://store.steampowered.com/app/21100/?l=english

Problems with Steam (counter-strike)
Hi everyone,
I recently switched to Ubuntu 6.06 (Dapper Drake) GNU/Linux. I installed
wine 0.9.9 using Synaptic package manager, and then downloaded
steamInstall.exe from http://www.steampowered.com. The installation
worked more or less (at first, it occupied progressively (according to
the system monitor widgets on the panel) all the free space in my

could get flash working, aparently activex controls won't install
correctly. Is there a way to fix this? (i've tried Winetricks for flash but
it tells me the .exe hash doesn't match or something). Anyways, just
curious, not to use ie in linux but mainly to get flash working since steam

I've recently installed wine without any special modifiers, I did it through the add/remove programs on Ubuntu 9.04. Steam installed without a problem, but will not run. After it was done installing, it gave me the 'updating steam' box and then just quits with no error.
Here is the output of the terminal window while installing:

SegFault trying to open Steam
This is very possibly an easy fix, as I've had steam running on this particular box before through wine. However, I've been googling my ass off and looking through the suggested fixes on the appdb to no avail. Let's start with my setup:
OS: Slackware 13.37 (64 bit with working multilib) completely up to date
Video: NVIDIA GeForce 9500 GT running the most recent linux 64 bit

I have been using Steam on suse for quite sometime without any issues, I updated to 12.1 and everything was still fine for months. After a Steam update a few weeks back Steam refused to load and instead pops up an error "Fatal Error: Could not load module 'bin/FileSystem_Steam.dll"
and produced the following in console: http://paste.kde.org/435782/
I have tried 32bit prefix and
