Error creating machine account logs: Unable to open new log file /var/log/samba/machinename.log Permission denied
This problem doesn't seem to affect the client's connectivity but I am not sure if it signals a larger problem. I started noticing this error: Unable to open new log file /var/log/samba/"machine".log Permission denied in the logs after upgrading to Samba version 3.0.21b. Any ideas?

Creating maching trust accounts
Hello, I have created a machine trust account with the following command 'pdbedit -a -m -u machinename' and I noticed that after I execute the following command 'pdbedit -L -v -u machinename', the Unix username is in lowercase letters? Because when I attempt to join a domain with a Windows 8.1 machine, it emits a error that it can't find the Machine account? Does it

Help with ADS authentication and Samba
Hi there, just recently joined this list as I seem to be having a little trouble that I am hoping someone can help with. I recently installed a RHEL5.5 server and updated samba to samba3-3.4.11-42.el5.x86_64.rpm. I had never set up samba to authenticate with ADS so I read a little bit and dove right in. The server now works fine, so when I browse to \\machinename<file:///\\machinename> no

Fwd: machine account with strange behaviour
Hi Oliver, My opinion is that try delleting the machine name using the 'control center' and delete the machine account in the passwd file. Then add the machine name again using "control center, edit & creat users ", then In console add the machine using: # smbpasswd -a -m <machinename>. Note i managed to do this on SuSE 8.1. Please send me an email if u're

Can't create machine accounts or join domain (automatically or manually with scripts or pdbedit)
Hello, I've seen other folks posting with this problem, but I think my issue is a bit different (thus the super long subject). The environment is Solaris 9 09/05, running Samba 3.0.22/Sun DS 5.2/idealx scripts 0.9.1, but I can translate openldap/linux/samba-ese if you think of a solution that would apply in that environment. Anyway - my core problem is an inability to add machine accounts

smbldap-useradd not creating machine accounts in correct fashion
Hi, I have OpenLDAP working here generally without problems for a variety of applications including the management of Samba. Functioning user accounts can be created via 'smbldap-useradd' with the proper samba attributes being added in LDAP, however... Something odd is happening when I (or samba) tries to create a machine account with 'smbldap-useradd -w test1$' - an entry is

Problem with RID to unix account mapping in ADS mode
Hello, I'm working with the samba-3.0.23c version currently released for use with RHEL-5. I'm trying to switch into ADS security from DOMAIN security and I'm having trouble with account mapping. Currently the mapping happens because the unix account name matches the windows account name. That no longer seems to be an option when you switch to ADS mode (please correct me if I'm

winbind/samba 3.0.1-1 fails to store machine account password when joining ADS
Hi All, The latest Debian unstable release of samba 3.0.1-1 appears to be fail in storing the machine account password when joining a 2000 AD domain. kinit user@realm works fine, as does net ads join suggesting the issue is not related kerberos misconfiguration. klist indicates no cached tickets, until kinit is used. and winbindd.log shows the following entries when winbindd starts.

Ubuntu 10.4, XP SP3, in a "classic" config (with user-auth) Samba works flawless. I'm new in Samba and have tried only next 1. useradd -d /false -s /bin/false MACH$ then I've looked in a shadow and

Hi everyone! I've got Samba 2.2.5 installed in a network of 3 client machines all running xp pro. Everything works ok except "on-the-fly" machine account creation...from what I've read I need something like add user script = /usr/sbin/useradd -d /dev/null -s /bin/false -M $u but this doesn't work for some reason. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong or haven't

net ads join fails with pre-created machine accounts
Hi folks, we have recently tried to join several FreeBSD machines to your forest where the machine accounts where pre-created by the core admin team. We did as root: # kinit 'machine-name$' # net ads join ... Unfortunately, it failed with an error that several attributes cannot be set which are available to domain admins only. It ultimately means that one cannot use pre-created
