Migrating to samba from windows NT domain
Hello,
I'm planning migration to Samba over Debian Etch servers from NT
domain with Windows NT servers.
I have only one domain, with 1 PDC and 5 BDC distributed on various subnets.
Unfortunately I have running various services in PDC and BDC servers
that I must remain after the migrations, so I can't stop PDC and BDC
servers permanently after the migration to Samba.
Can I deactivate

Moving Domains - profiles question
Hi,
I have an existing WinNT domain and, after some labour, a new Samba3x
domain. I created the Samba domain with a different name because the
WinNT domain name wasn't appropriate. I have about 40 users. Their
accounts have been added to the new domain. I'm almost ready to shift
everyone to the new domain but I am a bit concerned about the user's
profiles. These are local profiles. I

Problems with Samba and security hardened WinXP SP2 clients
We're running Fedora Core and Samba-3.0.8-0.pre1.3 and we're authenticating
our Windows XP users against Active Directory running on Windows 2003.
Everything works fine!
But now we're trying to secure and harden our WinXP machines and now when
any user logged into a secured WinXP they get the errormessage "The account
is not authorized to log in from this station". I browsed

pdbedit -P 'maximum password age' -C 0 should == never expire?
When I set the 'maximum password age' to 0, my password expired
immediately after I did a smbpasswd. Shouldn't setting it to 0 mean
the password will never expire? Or are there any other way to set
password to never expire?
Here is the microsoft's interpretation on 'maximum password age':

Local groups confusion
Hi, I apologise in advance for the length of this email and for the
possible newbie-ishness of it but I'm having some trouble trying to get
my head around the Windows NT "Local Groups" concept and was wondering
if anyone on the list could shed some light on the subject.
I have an NT4 BDC which I am trying to migrate to a Samba domain member
server (I would like to migrate the

Did Microsoft release any useful information . . . ?
Hello,
I just read on an austrian news site ( http://futurezone.orf.at/hardcore/stories/289596/
) that Microsoft released documentation of some of their protocols.
On the site there are 4 links to Microsoft:

mounting/connection to 2003 shares (members servers and domain controllers)
After a long and ardous search (I didn't find anything on the mailing
lists though weird) -- I've found the gold at the end of the rainbow.
It appears that domain controllers in Active Directory will by default,
require digital signatures (and perhaps encryption) for the smb protocol.
This breaks *DOS/LANMAN* clients to connecting to Windows 2003 and of
course versions of samba less than

Microsoft Monad Shell
Not sure if this has application for R but Microsoft's new Monad shell
is now in public beta. I have not looked at it myself but I wonder
if the tools that are required to create Windows R packages
could be replaced by this?

The Monad team has recently released Monad Beta 3.1 to Microsoft Download

Asterisk and MS Exchange 2007
Hi,
Here you can find a list of MS Exchange 2007 compliant systems:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/exchange/telephony-advisor.mspx
You cannot see mention of Asterisk ;-))
Has anyone tried to "integrate" Asterisk and Exchange 2007 ?
A prospective customer is using MS Exchange 2007 and is asking for such
integration.
Passion aside, what do you think of such integration ?

[LLVMdev] Legal matters using code etc from MS website
Hi Folks
Please review this link:
http://www.microsoft.com/info/cpyright.mspx#EKAA
As I see it, no one should use code copied from Microsoft directly, unless
you are explicitly sure it is for private or non-commercial use or a
permission is specifically granted for the purpose.
And for that matter, no one can be sure if you rewrite code, not to infringe
patents - as they adhere to

XP SP2 and slow logins/offline files sync: RPC changes?
I posted a while back (twice, actually), about some long delays with
offline files sync and, to a lesser extent, domain logins with Windows
XP SP2.
This is Samba 3.0.7 (ldapsam backend) on Mandrakelinux 9.2 and 10.0,
with XP SP1 clients. I make use of WINS and everything works fine for
SP1 clients.
Here's what I found since then: after the client is joined to the Samba
(NT) domain,

Access Based Enumeration
Microsoft has an add on for Windows 2003 SP1 that will do access based
enumeration.
This is great because of "out of sight, out of mind". If the user
doesn't have privilege to access the directory or file it doesn't show
up in the directory listing.

authenticating IIS 6.0 against samba?

sharepoint services can be used. I've tried getting NTLM authentication
working following instructions at

Lies wide open ...!
Being as a Windows geek tho, I consider Linux as a more powerful server
operating system than Windows. When I saw OS comparison at
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver/compare/linux/server-security.mspx I
was shocked! Showed it to a friend and he felt like being brainwashed :D
lol.
What do you fellows think about this?
Thanks.

Samba & Vista
Hello,
Does anybody know if Samba is compadable with Vista Yet? If so, is there a
way for a group pr user policy to allow samba users to things in windows
vista, like install programs w/o admin access. I know Vista has policies
that can do this, where it cna basicly grant the user access, witha prompt
or w/o a prompt. Can Samba support this too?
