PDC and BDC: how to sync profiles
I was wondering how people sync the roaming profiles in an environment with a PDC and multiple BDCs. Are profiles better stored in another server (a member server) instead of the xDC? I could use rsync from the PDC to the BDC, but that doesn't work the other way around, i.e., when a user logs in via a BDC whatever changes they make won't go back to the PDC. Unless the profile is: - always

Promoting Samba BDC to PDC
Hi, Our domain is setup with one Primary Domain Controller and two Backup Domain Controllers, and a member server. All domain controllers (PDC and BDCs) are running Gentoo Linux with Samba and LDAP. The member server (fileserver) is a SUNS machine running Solaris. We do everything (add, edit, modify groups and accounts) on the PDC and it will then sync all the changes to the BDC by way of

samba authenticate to 2K AD?
Has anyone on this list been able to configure samba in such a way so that it will authenticate to windows 2K acitve directory. What I want to do is this: install samba 2.2.7 onto a Redhat linux 7.3 system, then configure samba (I think using something called smb_pam) so that it will join the windows active directory domain. Is such a thing possible? Has anyone here done it? I can't find

Switch roles of PDC and BDC machines?
I've got two sites that I am planning a Samba3/LDAP implementation on, each will have its own local server. The problem is that I want to implement in my local office first, which is not the site that eventually will be the 'master' site. Sometime later when the proper master site comes online, I'd like to demote for lack of a better term, my local machine to a BDC and then

Hi, I am new to this list and to the world of Linux so please forgive my basic knowledge. I am after some information regarding samba. We are running a few servers with RedHat 7.1 all with dual nics. One NIC of each goes to a level 3 routing switch on one network and the second NIC in each server goes out to different networks. We have a few Windows 95 machine that

File Systems - Which one to use?
We are looking at implementing a Linux box running samba in the near future with about 1TB of disk online. The purpose of this box will be for basic file and printer sharing needs. I am doing research on the different journaling file systems avaible in RH 7.3 and up (ext3, reiserFS, and JFS) and was wondering if anyone has had any real world experience with them (mostly reiserFS and JFS) and

weird stat()
hei everyone, I have a weird problem: if I do a # cd /somedir; stat somesubdir |grep Modify where /somedir is some directory on an SMB-mounted filesystem I get one datetime... but I I do: # cd /somedir; stat * |grep Modify for the same directory I get a Modify time which consistently differs by 1 second. As I'm writing a perl module to detect differences in a filesystem and rely on the

Primary Group == Windows-Group?
Hello, 1: I've read, that primary-group of a user must be a windows-group? Is that true? 2. Why is there no group named 'Power Users' in Samba? (Actually there is only 'Domain Users' with insufficiant permissions on a win-box) matze

"checking whether to support ACLs... no"
Hi, This problem is really getting frustrating. I have set up my debian 3 box w/ kernel 2.4.2 patched for ext2/3 ACL support. I have also installed all utilies, both attr and ACL. I have joined the box to my domain using winbind and smbpasswd. I can set permissions all right using setfacl with domain+user but when I try to change permissions via LAN using w2k/xp I get access denied/or it just

wbinfo
Dear all, Got a problem that turns me around. I'm quite new to samba. Yesterday when i tried the wbinfo -u/-g and other options worked without any worry. Also there was no error in the UNIX passwd program where i even changed the root password. This morning onwards i'm facing with problems where the wbinfo says there is an error looking up the domain for users and groups -h -i works

PDC and BDC load-balancing
Hi there, I would like to know how Samba / Windows determines which domain controller should handle a logon request, and whether there is a way I can affect the process. Here's the situation: I have a school installation running a Samba domain, with a PDC (1.1GHz Celeron, 256 MB RAM) and one BDC (much smaller, 366 with 64 MB RAM), both with RedHat 7.1 and Samba 2.2.5. There are about 80

secretly replacing a windows domain client with samba
Hello! I have a problem: I work in a company which is strictly windows-only, and I really need to replace a windows-xp machine - which is a member of the company's domain - with a linux machine (using samba). This new linux machine will have to upload backups of its data to a share within the domain. Thus, it needs to be a member of the domain (correct?). Obviously, I need to join the

deleting files problem
Hi, I've got what I think is a pretty weird problem. I'm using redhat 8.0 and their latest samba rpm 2.2.7. I have a directory /virtuals/SAMARCAN/asterion_caen/hd4008/tiffout with about 600 tiff files in it. When I go this directory and try and delete them, it deletes about 100 of them or so, but while this is going on, it says:

PDC/BDC problem - clients not authenticating against BDC
Hey list, I've got a problem with my PDC/BDC setup. They're both running 3.0.23c on Sarge, and I've verified that both the PDC and BDC will authenticate users. test-pdc:/etc/samba# testparm Load smb config files from /etc/samba/smb.conf Processing section "[netlogon]" Loaded services file OK. Large-scale ACL copying?
Hi all, Well, I'm getting somewhere I think, I now have both ACL support and domain login basically working. However I'm at a bit of a loss as to how to proceed. Basically I want to copy over a large number of files and directories (~300k files, ~60Gb total) from an existing W2k server to a Samba server. These files have existing ACLs set, so I need to preserve them somehow. I can

Does the BDC need to "join" a domain?
If I configure a samba PDC and then a samba BDC, do I need a machine trust account for the BDC? That is, do I have to run "net rpc join" on the BDC? Or manually create the account for the BDC in LDAP? -- Mariano Absatz - "El Baby" el.baby at gmail.com www.clueless.com.ar
