I really appreciate all your responses on this.
I might not have fixed it by looking at samba logs but i noticed there was
directory in user unix directory with wildcard * as folder name
once i removed it, samba showed up all the files and directory.
am not sure what would * as folder name caused this behaviour
may be samba was trying to interpret * as something else not sure......

unable to open passdb database.
I found many questions but no answers on the web.
I described my needs in earlier post, but now switched from security =
domain to security = server, and designated the AD domain server as the
password server.
It works as desired, i.e. I don't need smbpasswd any more, and if windows
users change their passwords by ctrl-alt-del, they can later use the new
password without coming to admins.

load balancing CIFS/Samba
Hi Folks,
I'm trying out some ideas for loadbalancing Samba servers with some
replication underneath. Right now, we're trying to use DNS round robin,
just to see if it works, but it isn't.
Our basic config is that we have the same share and NMB server name on
every node. Each node has a different IP hostname, which are all
round-robin'ed to a single hostname. When we try to

Samba processes
Hi
Am noticing smbd processes are running as root and occassionally I see a
child process as userid
Just curios under what circumstances the smbd runs as user id process ( unix
id ) and running as root is a security risk?
Thanks in advance

Win2k & Samba - beginner
Hi,
I have a work provided Notebook with Win2k Pro and configured per company
specs. At home I have loaded Redhat7.2 and would like to be able to share
files between the 2 as required when I bring the Notebook home.
I have loaded Samba and attempted to configure using Swat, but still not much
luck.
I can print from the Notebook via the LAN connection to a printer connected
to the Linux box

WIN2K question
All,
I have scoured the archives and the How-to's and I am still having
trouble getting a Win2k to join a samba hosted domain. I have come
across different docs saying you need/do not need a root samba account
and that it needs/does not need to have the same password. I am lost as
to what I am missing. I created the machine account and added the
smbpasswd -a -m machine name. I try and add the

How to reduce size of samba binaries
Hi,
I'd like to reduce the size of the samba binaries. smbd for instance is
about 1.5 meg, which is way to much if you ask me. Is there a way to
create smaller binaries, maybe by compiling differently?
thanx,
Dennis

Samba - Performance Issues
Hello Guys,
I am having some problems with configuring SAMBA with regards to
performance. We are running SAMBA 2.2.3a on Dual PIII 1Ghz machines with
512MB of RAM. The server is running on a default server installation of Red
Hat 7.2. We have a 500Gb RAID 5 drive using the Promise SX6000 Raid
controller.
Currently we are only getting a throughput of ~5MB/S for writes and
~13MB/S for reads.

DNS Proxy - WINS problem - please help
Here is my scenario when a client wants to resolve a name on my local
network:
CLIENT --> VPN --> SAMBA --> DNS
The client is set up like so:
DNS1 = ISP DNS1 (204.26.64.1)
DNS2 = ISP DNS2 (204.26.80.3)
WINS1 = my samba1 (10.10.1.5)
WINS2 = my samba2 (10.10.1.8)
This all _seemed_ to have worked 3 days ago for roughly 6 months but
stopped suddenly without me doing anything.

Authenticate against NT Domain Group Membership
Hola folks,
How do I configure a share under Samba 2.2 using DOMAIN security to allow
all members of a specified NT domain group access to a particular share?
For example, something like:
[test]
comment = Test Share
path = /mnt/share/test
nt group = Nice-users, Wonderful Users
Where Nice-users and Wonderful Users are NT domain groups? So if User X is
a member of Nice-users, she would be

Samba authenication to Window Active Directory
Has any version of Samba been tested for compatibility with the new Windows Active Directory?
We will be upgrading our NT domain to 2000 and creating Active Directory.
Currently our solaris samba 2.0.7 server is configured to authenicate users from our NT domain controllers. Will we encounter problems with the 2000 upgrade?
Thanks in advance, Cynthia
