Persistant Z drive in XP
Hello. New to SAMBA.(2.2.8 on RH9) Mixed environment of 98 & (trying) XP. My "net use s: /home" command works wonderfully for XP and 98. But XP throws in an "extra" "more home-than-home" directory - namely \username\.win_profile on the Z drive. I've tried disconnecting it with: net use Z: /delete, but XP claims to have a process running on it (even after 10

SIDs and UIDs and RIDs - Oh My!
I'm trying to grasp pg. 154 of the "Official SAMBA-3" book by Terpstra and Vernooij and I'm just missing a critical networking concept. I understand that SIDs are the numerical identification of a user for the Windows world. I understand that UIDs are the equivalent for the *nix world. But what the @$@! is a Relative IDentifier (RID)?!? On page 153 the command to map a

My Samba Server had a wild time this weekend thanks to alleged power fluctuations. I'm using Samba 3.x on Fedora 4. My server sits on an APC UPS that remains in good health. When I arrived this Monday I found that my MicroTik Router was still up. My Win XP pro AV server was off and my Fedora/SAMBA box was also off. (all boxes have their own 15min UPS) The Win XP pro was brought up w/out

configure options for 3.x -still experimental?
Hello. I am trying to set up SAMBA 3.x on FC4. SAMBA will be PDC with no other server. I work at a K-12 school, so unless I want 20 episodes of "Family Guy" in a student's folder, I need to set quotas. I've been looking around for 2 days and I'm stumped. I found something called smbcquotas, but it seems to apply to a mixed NT server environment. I heard rumors of configure

passwd not running as root
Hi all, I posted a message about this problem a couple of weeks ago without a response so I'm trying again. My problem is that samba does not seem to be running passwd as root when it tries to sync the passwords. For example, when I run smbpasswd as a user logged onto the samba box I get the following error: machine 127.0.0.1 rejected the password change: Error was : RAP86: The specified

problem changing the password as non-root user
I set the following in smb.conf: encrypt passwords = true unix password sync = true As says smb.conf # This boolean parameter controls whether Samba attempts to sync the Unix # password with the SMB password when the encrypted SMB password in the # passdb is changed. 1) Always I had understood if I change the smb passwd, the unix passwoed in /etc/passwd did too. However this does not

Move Samba 3.0 PDC to different machine
Hi Samba List - I've been surfing the web for a while looking for some help with moving an existing Samba 3.0 PDC to a different machine. I don't want to have to reconfigure each machine on my domain. There has got to be a way to backup the full domain controller, reinstall the samba packages on a new Linux machine, and just restore the users database, etc. I'm sure someone has

Changing passwd as ordinary user
Dear all, when I try to change my password as ordinary user using "smbpasswd", I get the following error message: machine 127.0.0.1 rejected the password change: Error was : RAP86: The specified password is invalid. I'm sure my old password is correct and the new password also. If I change the ordinary user password as root, everything works fine... I would appreciate your help,

Unix password sync
Hi all, Sorry if this has been answered before, but I've searched Google and the archives and it hasn't revealed an answer to my problem. Basically I'm trying to get unix password sync to work so that users can change both their logon and other services (POP3 etc) passwords from within Windows. but the problem is that if I enable unix password sync, it fails with the error of:

changing smbpasswd password rules
Where does smbpasswd get its password rules from? I need to change them! I need to allow for passwords as short as 3 characters. I've changed my unix rules to allow users using passwd to change their password correctly but samba will not. I'm using encrypted passwords so min password length = 3 doesn't do anything, right? I keep getting RAP86 errors and the log says password too

Samba, pam, NIS and password changes
Hi I have a customer who is having a problem with Samba password changes. The samba server (server12) is set up as a PDC for a WIndows domain with XP clients. Samba is Version 3.0.26a-SerNet-RedHat. OS is Centos 3.9. There is also a separate mail server (server56) running FC6 which uses NIS for user validation. NIS server is running on server12. Generally speaking, everything is working and
