Understanding Documentation about BDC in HowTo Collection
hi list&john,
i read in the documention about BDCs:
The domain SID has to be the same on the PDC and the BDC. In Samba
versions pre-2.2.5, the domain SID was stored in the file
|private/MACHINE.SID|. For all versions of Samba released since 2.2.5
the domain SID is stored in the file |private/secrets.tdb|. This file is
unique to each server and cannot be copied from a PDC to a BDC; the BDC

LDAP/Samba issues when replacing server
I hope that someone can let me know what I have done wrong.
I need to replace and existing server (server1) with a new server (server2). Server1 is currently running LDAP/Samba (3.0.14). Profiles stored in /opt/samba/profiles
I installed all of the pieces, and LDAP works (mostly, I have an issue, see below)
I ran net getlocalsid DOMAINNAME on server1
used the SID value in net setlocalsid

migrating to a new server with LDAP
Hello folks.
I need to migrate from an old server still running Debian Woody to a new
server running Dapper Drake.
The big challenge is turning out to be who to plan out the Samba LDAP
migration.
The current server version is 3.0.20 compiled form source and the Dapper
package is 3.0.22 and appears to include ldap support. So I don't think
I need to compile or worry about version

Changing domain name
Hi,
For reasons best known to the IT admin before myself, we currently
have a domain name of WARLOCK. I want to change this. We have about
15 WinXP Pro client machines on the domain as well as a few linux
domain clients.
A bit of reading shows that it should be as simple as doing a net
getlocalsid, making the change, followed by a net setlocalsid.
I started doing this when I noticed something

Domain SID does not match built in domain groups' SIDs...
Hello,
I'm having a few problems, but I'm thinking this should be fixed first.
It may solve my other issues.
It appears that the built in domain groups' SIDs do not match the
domain's SID. I used the IDEALX scripts to create these accounts and I
obviously thought everything was fine before proceeding to add users and
groups.
Any suggestions on how I can correct this without

Samba & SIDs
Hi all,
I need help to clear a bit of confusion regarding SIDs on Samba servers.
I had my PDC collapse on Thursday which wasn't too much of a problem as I had
everything backed up but I'm now in the position that I have a mismatched
Domain SID. If I run net getlocalsid I get the sid for the server (called
smb0) and net get local sid <domain> returns the sid for the Domain.

PDC/BDC problem - clients not authenticating against BDC
Hey list,
I've got a problem with my PDC/BDC setup. They're both running 3.0.23c on Sarge, and I've verified that both the PDC and BDC will authenticate users.

migrate profile from an old server to a new one - SID and ntuser.dat problem
Hi,
my problem is the following:
i am trying to replace an old SUSE 8.2, Samba 2.2
domain controller with a SUSE 9.3 system with samba
3.0 as PDC.
Everything works fine, i can join the new domain, i
replaced the machine and domain sid from the new
server with the old ones.
But how can reuse the profiles from the old machine
at the new one?
If i make a simple remote copy, the settings of the

"net setlocalsid" question
Hi,
I'm a tad confused about something. I've got a production instance of Samba
running. I am trying to get a test version running on the same box, with the
same SID. Without the test server running, I used "net setlocalSID
<oldsid>" (the net binary is the one for the new server). Then when I issued
'net getlocalsid' it returned it. I thought I was fine.

Samba 2.2 to 3.0.9 DC upgrade problems
Hi all,
I just replaced a client's SUSE 8.0/Samba 2.2 DC with a SUSE 9.2/Samba 3.0.9
DC. Drives were giving trouble, and since that box was a first attempt at a
linux DC there was a lot of room for improvement.
I copied the profiles and home directories over to the new machine, chowned
them to the new users. I also did extracted the securid from the old DC and
set it to the new one

Want to recreate db.
Hiya
So im trying to get my PDC working. Started off small and then exported
my smbpasswd to tdbsam with pdbedit.
The next thing I saw was all the Linux system account (irc, game, mail,

and clear restart the tdb's
My question is, can I just delete the tdb files. If not,

migrating Samba PDC to a new server
Hi,
I'd like to migrate Samba 3.0.24-6etch10 PDC running on a Debian server to a
new
Ubuntu server. I plan to install Samba 3.0.28a-1ubuntu4.4 on the new server
and
then copy the files in /etc/samba and /var/lib/samba and copy the related
Linux
users in /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow. Will it work?
Thanks in advance!

SID of member server in Samba domain (smbldap_search_domain_info: NT_STATUS_UNSUCCESSFUL)
I have a domain with Samba 3 acting as PDC, and using LDAP (passdb backend = ldapsam).
I now wanted to add a second Samba 3 machine as a simple file server. I get errors
with getdomainsid and getlocalsid, so there is obviously still something wrong with
my config.
The PDC runs Samba 3.5.6 on Debian Squeeze. Sid queries return:
# net getdomainsid
SID for local machine MY_PDC_HOST is:

Two differents sambaSID ! Very strange !
Hi,
I've configured the SambaSID of my domain manualy with "net setlocalsid
S-1-...."
I've done a check with "net getlocalsid" and everything seems to be ok,
but when I add a new user with smbpasswd, his sambaSID doesn't
correspond to the Domain SambaSID ! And in the LDAP directory, the
sambaSID of the sambaDomain ObjectClass doens't correspond to the

Upgrading from samba-3.0.34 to 3.4.4 - result: domain controller unavailable
Hi.
Today I upgraded samba from 3.0.34 to 3.4.4 without changing anything in
smb.conf but with changing local and domain sid:
old samba 1) net getdomainsid and getlocalsid
new samba 2) net setdomainsid and setlocalsid to ones (both the same)
from 1)
after restarting samba I can't log into domain: XP says : domain
controller unavailable ... I tried to rejoin domain - and I can ;)

Can't fetch domain SID
Hi,
I happened to delete /etc/samba/secrets.tdb. Now I can not get DOMAIN
SID by run:

Any idea how to recover it? Do I need to reinstall the whole Samba suite?

using the old user profiles for the new PDC
Hi,
A few days ago PDC crashed and I setup a new PDC with the same domain name.
I have recreated the user accounts but when the users login, windows xp
clients create a new profile. Is there a way to make the windows clients use
the old profiles?
Thanks.
