RFC: ext3 ability to syslog actions
Forgive me if this has been discussed. I'm new to the list and couldn't find any list archives or a FAQ or anything similiar. (Is there anything?) I've just today installed ext3 .5d in my machine. All drives (including '/'). I like it! However, I'm curious about what it's doing. I don't know C, so telling me to read source won't help. I'm wondering if it

weirdness on powerfail
I had a power-fail this morning, and when I rebooted, /etc/rc.d/rc.boot issued a 'mount -n -o remount,ro /' and then a 'fsck -A -V -a -C'. The fsck failed on my root partition. I know why it failed. It called fsck.ext2 . My root poartition is ext3. My question is, why did it call fsck.ext2? Another question, why was it checked at all? My /etc/fstab contains: /dev/hda1 / ext3

slowdown and reiserfs
hi i got 2 questions and maybe someone could shed some light: a) i'm using kernel 2.4.17 and use ext3 in it. is it possible that the whole system is slower than with ext2? i switched back to ext2 (great feature!!!) and the system's response seemed somewhat better. should/could there be such a effect as double writing of journaled data? i didnt activate debugging (jbd). b) is reiserfs

stupid question on e2fsprogs
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Right now, every release of e2fsprogs, I do the following: ./configure --enable-elf-shlibs && make && make install rm config.cache && rm config.status ./configure && make install-libs Are these two seperate steps necessary? Samba on ReiserFS
Dear Listmembers, I try to work with samba (newest rpm for SuSE, 3.0.1.pre2, but that does not matter, the effect was there in 2.2.7 and 2.2.8a too) on an sufficient armed system (the system does not matter either, I have tried it on different machines) using ReiserFS (version 3.6.4-12). When accessing one share from one machine (i.e. copying two or more files at a time to or from the share)

removing visible journal.dat
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 I created all my ext3 partitions a while back, so the journal.dat file is visable. I'd like to remove them and use the new tune2fs functionality. Can I just mount the drives as ext2, rm journal.dat, tune2fs -j /dev/hd?? and then remount as ext3? Or am I missing something? thanks! - -- Douglas J. Hunley (Linux User #174778)

Ext3fs/ReiserFS Performance Enhancing
Hello All, I have been doing some research to find a method to increase the performance of writes to the hard drives in my servers. I am running Samba and all writes to the server hard drives are taking at least 3 to 10 times (It varies) the amount of time it took to write such files on our older Windows NT 4.0 File Server. The following information is provided to keep this issue on track...

ordered data mode?
I managed to install 0.5d today. Got all 3 of my mounts converted (even '/' though it was a pain in the ass). Now on boot, I see: mounted /dev/hda1 on / EXT3-fs: mounted filesystem with ordered data mode and the exact same thing for /dev/hda3 and /dev/hdb1. they all come up and appear to be working. so is this normal? Caveats to mounting ext3 as ext2?
I have a partition that is formatted as ext3 however, due to apparent performance issues (not sure if they are related to journaling - data=ordered, BTW) I have mounted this file system as ext2. The file system was clean when it was shutdown, and has been cleanly mounted as ext2, and I currently have no problems with the partition. My question is, is there any harm in mounting this partition as
