Logon script, help please
Hi,
I'm having trouble getting a logon script to work...
I have created a DOS batch file (timesync.bat) and placed it in the scripts
directory of the server.
The file contains only one line - net time \\ptlserver /SET /y
My smb.conf "Globals" section is:-
[global]
workgroup = PTLTRAIN
netbios name = PTLSERVER
server string = Llandrindod Trainee Server
encrypt passwords = Yes

clients logout .............
You should be able to click Tools/Disconnect Network Drive from a
Windows Explorer window, then select the connection to the Samba server
and click ok. Note, this can be done even if the connection was not
mapped to a drive letter, such as by typing \\server\share in the run
box. You can then map a drive to the server with a different user
account.

File "In Use" when it's not... problem
Hi. Occasionally a problem crops up with "File already in use by another user" when it isn't !! This is usually a Lotus organiser data file which is on the RH8/Samba 2.2.7 server. I can't find a way of clearing this "Lock" except by rebooting the server... there must be a better way, any ideas ?
Thanks
Mike

RE: SWAT not working, can't authenticate
I have had this problem before. Never really got to the bottom of it but if
you want to get on then just add '-a' to your swat command to disable
authentication.

RE: SWAT not working, can't authenticate
Did you make sure localhost resolves? Also, depending on your
/etc/resolv.conf, you may have to fully qualify the host's name including
the DNS domain. I seem to rember having problems with this, and some
combination of using localhost or hostname.domain.edu or using the actual IP
address of the host cleared up the problem.

Hide printer icon
Hi, is there any way I can hide the "printers" icon/folder from the Windows users ? We don't have any printers attached to the Samba server and find that it's confusing the users a little !
Thanks

SWAT, where ?
Hi there... first I apologise for being dim...
Where can I download SWAT from ? I've looked on the Samba.org site but it
only tells me that the demo page is off-line and no more info.
Idiot proof instructions for installing it on RH 7.2 would be handy too :-)
Thanks

Restricting file types
Samba List:
Is it possible to limit what filename extensions can be stored in a
samba share? We use samba to allow our windows web designers to use drag
and drop when deploying new pages on our website. We want to be able to
limit which filename extensions can be saved to these shares. Is this
possible and if not and alternatives?

OK, Samba's OK, now I need swat help.
Ok, I should be able to start swat with xinetd, but I can't seem to get
anything to start.
1. How do I tell if swat is running (other than trying to browse to
aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd:901)
2. Can someone give me an idea of what and where I need commands for xinetd.
Server is RH7.2, Samba 2.2.3a, following file "swat" is in /etc/xinetd.d/

Samba SWAT 2.2.7 Doesn't Work in Redhat8.0?
Hello All Samba-list Members,
I have installed a Samba 2.2.7, the samba-latest.tar.gz, as a PDC on a
Redhat8.0 GNU/Linux server. ( Of course, I first uninstalled the original
samba that came with the Redhat installation CDs by rpm -e samba*.) The
installation was successful. Then I modified /etc/services and
/etc/xinetd.d/swat as suggested in the installation document uncompressed

Problem accessing SWAT with Firefox
Hi, not sure if I'm posting in the right place but couldn't find a SWAT forum.
I've just changed my PC but the new one has exactly the same settings (IP, computername, login, password) as the old one, however I am getting an error when I try to access any of my Samba servers from Firefox (2.0.0.3) :-

Simplifying User Adding
I was wondering if there is a way Samba can use either the Windows domain or Unix usernames and passwords rather than having to have add another password.
We are running HPUX 11 samba 2.0.6 and whenever we have to add a new user (once or twice a month) we have to add them to the Windows domain, the Unix passwd file and then set them up in Samba for a password. is there a simpler way?

FW: Accessing Samba share with Win2k
Since I haven't had a response to my earlier post, I'm reposting this with
some more info.

Sending message to connected users ?
Hi,
Is there any simple way to send messages to all users who are connected to my Samba server.
I've just a basic fileserver setup (in a workgroup not Domain) all clients are using Win2k and mapping to shares. I'd like to be able to send them a "popup" message from the Linux console (or my PC, or somewhere !) to let them know when I'm intending to reboot the server !

Stopping new directory creation ?
Hi, I've been looking for a way to stop users creating new sub-directories
under a top level (shared) directory - which will need to contain 3
readymade directories and/or to stop users placing files outside the 3
readymade directories.
Is this at all possible ?
Got a really basic system - Slackware 8.0 and Samba 2.2.8a running purely as
a fileserver for Win2k clients.
Thanks

A good book...
I am sure that this question has been asked to death, and I am also hoping
that this is in fact the right place to ask this question.
I am very new to Samba and want to learn more. I have found several books
available about Samba, but I don't know which one to get.
So my question is... Which one is the book everyone figures is the best?

FW: Windows machines to samba over internet
That is correct jim. We will setup a vpn, we also know the ports to open
but the real question is if there is any parameter to increase the
timeout period when the windows machines decide that there is no "share"
at the other end.... Since the remote workers connected to the internet
are using slow links, we are having problems with timeouts....
Thanks,

No subject
force user (S)
This specifies a UNIX user name that will be assigned as the default user
for all users connecting to this service. This is useful for sharing files.
You should also use it carefully as using it incorrectly can cause security
problems.
This user name only gets used once a connection is established. Thus clients
still need to connect as a valid user and supply a valid password. Once

Win2K and Samba
Has anyone tried using Windows 2000 Professional with Samba? I'm
checking it out now, and when I try to connect to a share, I get an
error message similiar to the one you get with Win98 and NT4 with SP3+
with encrypted passwords.
Does anyone know the equivelant registry path to set plain text passwords? The NT4 path doesn't seem to exist:
