Samba 2.2 or 3.0?
hi all, Here is the situation. We are currently upgrading our infrastructure to use LDAP as our authentication mechanism and I intend to also have Samba look at LDAP. I had this working in a test case using 2.2 as a PDC awhile ago. Should I be using 3.0 or 2.2 for this implementation? I realize that 3.0 is still quite alpha-quailty, but I've also read one or two interview with the

samba as a file server
I currently have samba 3.0.2 working with ldap as a filer sever Only. My question is how would I get samba working as file server that would handle 50k users. My main concern is that I want reliability. I would also like to be able to build horizantally if needed. I was first thing some type of cluster connecting to a SAN but I would rather do it like we do our webservices. We have x

readBin on binary non-blocking connections (Windows & Unix differences/bugs)
R-devel: I am encountering a consistency issue using socketConnection and readBin with *non-blocking* connections on Unix and Windows XP (no Vista to test). I am a bit confused by the behavior of *non-blocking* connections under Windows specifically. When calling readBin on a non-blocking connection when there is no data to read on the socket, the connection under Unix will return a vector of

prevent smbclient from trying 445?
When I use smbclient to access an IOMEGA NAS server, smbclient tries to access port 445 for a full five minutes before timing out: [2004/02/20 17:48:24, 10] lib/gencache.c:gencache_get(262) Returning valid cache entry: key = NBT/NAS_120_1#20, value = 192.168.123.161:0, timeout = Fri Feb 20 17:53:22 2004 [2004/02/20 17:48:24, 5] libsmb/namecache.c:namecache_fetch(201) name

reduce limit number of arguments in methods:::cbind
Dear all, As far as I understand, the number of arguments in methods:::cbind is limited by the "self recursive" construction of the function which generates nested loops. A workaround could be to use the internal cbind function on blocks of non S4 objects. The limitation would then be reduced to the number of consecutive S4 objects. ##### R code ##### dfr <- data.frame(matrix(0,

Reduce memory peak when serializing to raw vectors
Hi, I've been doing some tests using serialize() to a raw vector: df <- data.frame(runif(50e6,1,10)) ser <- serialize(df,NULL) In this example the data frame and the serialized raw vector occupy ~400MB each, for a total of ~800M. However the memory peak during serialize() is ~1.2GB: $ cat /proc/15155/status |grep Vm ... VmHWM: 1207792 kB VmRSS: 817272 kB We work with very

Reduce memory peak when serializing to raw vectors
Presumably one could stream over the data twice, the first to get the size, without storing the data. Slower but more memory efficient, unless I'm missing something. Samba 3.0 Alpha
Does net rpc join work in SAMBA (using HEAD from CVS compiled this morning) Configured with ACL, with PAM, and with WINBIND. It seems that I cannot rejoin my domain (PDC is NT4sp6a) after I turfed machine.sid and secrets.tdb. I tried using smbpasswd first and was informed to use net join rpc instead. Logs available if needed. Thanx Hans

a question about swap space, memory and read.table()
Hi all Two computers: one is my desktop PC, windows2000, R 1.9.1. Physical RAM 256MB, Swap (Virtual memory) 384Mb. When I allocate a large matrix, it firstly uses up RAM, then use swap space. In windows' task manager, the usage of memory could exceed my physic RAM's size. The other machine is a remote server. Windows XP, R 1.9.1 Physical RAM 2GB. Swap space 4GB. I use "R

NTLMv2 in Samba 3.0
I tested NTLMv2 again using the newly created Samba 3.0.2 (I didn't test 3.0.1). It still doesn't seem to work. Has anyone successfully made NTLMv2 work? If so, can I have a working sample of the smb.conf file? I have included below entries in my smb.conf (among other entries): security = server password server = NTDomainController client ntlmv2 auth = yes On both NTDomainController and

W2K3 Server + RAS + Samba 3.0 Domain
Hi ! I?m trying to figure out if it?s possible to add a W2K3 Server into a Samba 3.0 Domain and then have the RAS-Service on the W2K3 server authenthicate against the Samba Domain. Bringing the 2K3 into the Domain was not much of a problem, working fine so far, i can log on using Domain users etc. But i?ve been trying for a week now and i can?t get the RAS Service working properly. 3.0 alpha 17 fails to build under Solaris 8
I was going to explore the infinite possibilites offered by PAM, winbind, NIS, and alpha17, but it never got past the build stage. Sigh. Note that 2.2.3a built just fine with this same machine, same compiler (GCC 3.0.4), and same OpenSSL (0.9.6b). Not just the same versions, but the files themselves haven't moved. 27% pwd /tmp/pedwards/samba-3.0-alpha17/source 28% make Using FLAGS

NTLMv2 in Samba 3.0
Hello, Has anyone successfully configured Samba 3.0 to authenticate using NTLMv2 only? Hi! I'm trying to connect to a share on a Windows 2003 server with samba 3.0.0.
