Windows NT/2000/XP printer driver downloading
Hi,
I am new to the Samba world. I have a question regarding the Windows
NT/2000/XP automatically printer driver downloading.
Do we, the Sysadmins, have to set up different printer entries in
smb.conf to tell the Windows NT/2000/XP end users to use different
printer drivers for their systems? Or Does the Samba have the capability
of automatically identifying client OS, then download different

"Printer settings couldn't be saved. Access is denied" problem on Samba 2.2.6
Hi Samba gurus,
I need your help for the problem of denying the change of the print
driver settings on samba. I have no any clue of this problem. Thanks for
any comments and tips.
Our institution has a windows 2000 active directory domain; I joined my
test samba 2.2.6 on a Linux box into domain as the file/print member
server. All the file sharing worked fine, but when I tried to upload

download.file() yields incomplete files with method="internal" (PR#7991)
Summary:
When I use method="wget" with download.file(), I consistently get
a download of the entire file. When I use method="internal", I
infrequently get the entire file, but usually get only part of the file. This
behavior occurs with .cdf (a weather file format - basically binary)
from a UCAR site.
I am not sure this is a bug, since it could be some internet

Print spooler dies?
I am using samba 2.2.5 and cups 1.1.4 as a print server.
Everything is working well, except occasionally the spooler
service on my user's machines will randomly die. This
happens across platforms (2k, NT, XP) and never happened
with the same drivers/setup on the WinNT print server that
I have just replaced. I've attached a link to my setup file.
Let me know if you have any ideas.

Has anyone seen this before?
I'm using samba and cups to allow NT/2k machines to print to an HP LaserJet
4000N printer. The printer works fine except for one in house program. In
this one program, all the horizontal lines that should be printed are
missing. Originally I thought this was a driver problem, but today, for no
apparent reason, it started printing the horizontal lines... but only for
the first page of each

If in [global] <guest ok = yes> why do I get an authe ntication sc reen when accessing from NT box?
To force guest access to a share, you need both
guest ok = yes
guest only = yes
Otherwise it will try and authenticate you first before
dropping you to guest. If this doesn't work, possibly
you don't have a valid guest account set. If no account
is set as the guest account (on the linux machine) it will
use the user "nobody".

PCL vs. PCL 6
I am currently using samba to try and replace a windows NT box
as the default print server. All is working well except for
one printer driver. All drivers were installed from a win2k
machine onto the samba print$ share.
The problem that I'm having is with a driver for the HP laser
jet 4000N printer. The PCL driver works and loads quickly.
The PCL 6 driver works, but the properties

memory tricks
Perhaps I've missed this in the FAQ, but has someone documented any tricks
which can be used in R to optimize memory usage/execution time? For S+,
StatSci used to recommend:
1. Avoid "for" loops whenever possible.
2. In "for" loops, have a simple expression, such as TRUE, as the last
statement.
3. Allocate memory for a vector/array at one time, rather than building it
up

Please Help. Samba as PDC and printing
Hi !
I hate to do this but I'm close to get crazy about printing with samba.
I have a samba server ver 2.2.5 running as a domain controler.
The domain logon works fine, I've created the computer account by hand for
testing and it is great. The problem is with printing.
I've created the [print$] share all the directories in this share like

Automatic Printer Driver Download Access Denied
Hi,
I have a problem for implementing automatic printer driver download on
Samba 2.2.7a. When I tried to upload printer drivers from a Windows 2000
client, I could see the printers were uploaded to the printer driver
directory W32X86 under Unix. However, When I tried to apply those
changes to the printer driver, I got ?printer settings could not be
saved, Access is denied?.

robust mixed effects models
I'd like to apply the ideas of
Pinheiro et al. (1997): "Robust Estimation in LInear Mixed Effects Models

estimation described in that paper has been implemented by somebody in R
already (I'm assuming it's not yet available within the package nlme --

Remote printer access
We are trying to add remote PC access to a printer using Samba and the Network
Neighborhood. We are running Solaris 2.5.1 on our server and our PCs are running
Win95. We have installed Samba 1.9.16p2. I'm fairly new at administering Samba.
The printer is a high-quality color Tektronics Phasor 450 PostScript printer
named hq_color_fl2. Access to our other printers has been set up previously

Slow driver properties?
I'm currently using Samba 2.2.5 on a Mandrake 8.0 box with cups 1.1.4.
I have several printers shared that are accessed from winNT/2k/xp boxes.
When I right click on the printer or select printer properties, or go to
print from any of those other boxes, the response is slower than molasses.
I have an identical machine running WinNT Workstation that was previously
our print server. It is

generic/method consistency

I realize the answer is very likely in the section Generic functions and
methods (or Adding new generics), but I'm not clear what to do with the
following. Running R CMD check, I get the following warnings for my
generic functions. Does this mean I need the argument
