Difference between smbstatus and WINS (was WINS querying (Advance d))
Unfortunately, it appears smbstatus will only show the clients that have accessed the shares since the last restart of the smb daemon (not a guarantee that people will do this in our case). There appears to be a timeout of this information as well. WINS does keep all this information based on when the client's machine first logs into the network, so it's a lot more accurate. Man, I wish

Logging in taking too long with roaming profile (not large profile issue)
Thus spake Nathan Ehresman (nehresma@css.tayloru.edu) [29/07/03 08:50]: > check out http://www.css.tayloru.edu/~nehresma/samba.html Check out the logs -- this is a completely different problem. Ed and I have been working on this for some time now, and while your solution wards off potential future problems, it doesn't fix the current problem. We're not having the typical 'My

WINS Retention
How does one get rid of machines from the WINS database? They seem to hang around forever....and a restart doesn't solve it because the WINS data just gets passed around... Michael D. Black mblack@csihq.com http://www.csihq.com/ http://www.csihq.com/~mike 321-676-2923, x203 Melbourne FL

Why only one WINS server?
Hello, Documentation states that one should set up only one Samba server as WINS server. While NT's TCP/IP setup has two entrys, one for a primary and one for a secondary WINS server I wonder why there should be only one Samba WINS server. Has anyone tried this with two Samba WINS servers? Did you suffer from any interferences. I did and the machines are running perfectly smooth. Did I

alternative password database, using ldap instead of , private/smbpasswd
hee hee, jean francois is going to be annoyed. this code is still under "definite alpha" status, but i really, really wanted to get it in there asap. so, the latest cvs checkin adds the ability to use an ldap schema for the passwords, not that i know what one of those actually is (only kidding: i've just never set one up yet). here it is: Subject: LDAP schema objectclass

multiple ldap servers
Hello, I was looking at the ldap authentication code (in 2.2.5) and it looks like there is no support for having multiple ldap servers for authentication (ie, if one is not responding, try from a backup). Does anyone have a patch to add this functionality? If not, I'll go ahead and do it but I wanted to check to see if it has already been done first. Thanks, Nathan Ehresman

Logging in taking too long with roaming profile
Hello, I am trying to setup a network of 5 XP computers with roaming profiles. I've got a profile set up on the server and I can log on. The problem is that the log in time takes about 10 mins and the log out takes just as long. Here is a link to the log file from the samba server. I have made comments on it to show what is happening on the terminal.

SAMBA 3.0 joining Domain fails with SuSE rpm's
Hello, I'm not sure if it's a bug - or I'm just too stupid..!? Downloaded the Samba beta-code from ftp.suse.com/gd - rpm's for SuSE 8.2 (03/06/22). Installed all packages with no problems - samba works well, but integration in a W2K Domain fails. Kinit is successful but joining a domain brings up the following errors. nas-01:~ # net ads join [2003/06/23 21:44:41, 1]

Configuring printer drivers
Hi, I've been running a samba server for our small group of users (about 15) for approx the last 18 months with great success. We use the server for both file and printer sharing. I had to make some modifications to the printer configuration today, and I've got a quick question which arose from my tinkering. I wanted to configure the server such that each of our printers can be used

New Samba alpha release - 1.9.18alpha13
The Samba Team are pleased to announce Samba 1.9.18alpha13. This code release is very close to what we hope will become the 1.9.18 official release. Because of this, we would encourage as many people as possible to download and test this new release on their particular systems, in order to ensure as stable an official release as possible. Please bear in mind that this is still an alpha

stubbing in development environment
Hi guys. Quite happy with mocha for testing. It''s been a bit of an eye opener for me, and I expect to begin using it heavily. One other thing I''d like to do is stub out particular class methods in development. Is there a way I can do this with mocha? Jason

WINS querying (Advanced)
Hi all... I need to make a few queries to WINS, but am unsure how to do so. 'nmblookup' will allow me to enter an IP address and get information about the machine name, domain, and username. I want to do the opposite...I would like to have a tool that will take a username and return the IP address. I know this information is stored in WINS somehow, and I am capable of writing some Perl

how to continue develop package
Hi, I have completed a prototype of a package, say FOO, and now I want to start using it as an ordinary R package, i.e. attach it via library("FOO"). On the other hand I will be adding functionality and fixing bugs so the code is going to change a lot. There is a couple of problems that don't know how to solve: 1. To be able to use library() the package must be INSTALLED. The
