ACL group permissions only work on primary group (RickSegeberg)
I appreciate your response and I tried your solution. However, it does not seem to help. I am using MS Active Directory on a Windows 2000 server for the authentication and rights for the users. I realize AD is based on LDAP, but it's been changed to suit Microsoft's needs - meaning it's not "pure ldap". Based on what you said, I made sure to create a user and a few groups

updated: managing acl's via windows in samba 3.0 alpha 21
Update: Just for my personal assurance, I decided to recompile samba again making sure to use the parameters I thought I had used the first time (./configure --with-winbind --with-acl-support --with-ads --with-smbmount). Without changing any of my configs, I restarted samba and winbind. One trick: to change rights on a file, you must own it or be root. This is where the "force user =

managing acl's via windows in samba 3.0 alpha 21
I've been trying to get the acl functionality (from windows) to work now for several days and have not found a solution. I've spent many hours Googling the web, and searching the samba list archives. If someone else has this working (in the 3.0 alpha code), I would appreciate seeing your config files, if you wouldn't mind. Goal: to be able to add user/group permissions to files

HowTo: Samba 3 w/ ads and acl working
Just wanted to thank those who have helped me (knowingly (such as Andrew Bartlett) and others unknowingly) get Samba set up to work with MS Active Directory and with ACL support working. As is typical in lists like these, there are way more requests than thanks. Being in the IT industry, I know personally the never-ending deluge of help requests and the seemingly very short list of thank

RE: follow-up: samba backup software
Yes, they have a 30 day downloadable demo. Here's the link: http://www.network-backup.com/datasheets/nnet8linux.html The installation was a piece of cake. RE: follow-up: samba backup software
Follow up to my question for those also looking for backup solutions: Thanks for the input, it was helpful and gave me some leads. For What it's worth: I've been testing Novastor's Novanet 8.5. Pretty impressive. It has a nice GUI interface or a command line menu system, backups performed well, recognized my library without any extra effort on my part. Pricing isn't too bad

samba backup software
I'm curious to what people are using for backing up their samba servers. Here's are some specs to consider: - 1TB (yes, that's terabyte) of data - multiple servers backup to one tape drive connected to a server (preferably a linux system) - using an autoloader (in this case, an HP 1/9 LTO system) - need to be able to backup daily changes and/or changes since last full backup

MAC OS 9 on Samba 3.0 vs. Samba 2.2.7
I am experimenting with MAC OS 9 using samba as a file server. I am using Thursby's DAVE to connect. For those who don't know, DAVE is a client utility that allows an OS 8 or 9 system to connect to windows file shares. The MAC can connect to both servers with no problems. However, when copying a file to the samba 3 server, I get the following error: The item <file name> could

How to know what users i have added with smbpasswdprogram?
If you are not using a domain and have added the users directly with the smbpasswd utility, you can just cat the smbpasswd file. Typically, it's found in /usr/local/samba/private directory. If it's long, you might want to use more (or less). Rick Segeberg Provo Site Manager, IT Department The Waterford Institute rick.segeberg@waterford.org -----Original Message----- From:

FW: Unofficial Samba+ACL howto
Sorry - I should have addressed this to Paul Eggleston who started this thread. Regardless who started it (the Samba + ACL howto), my offer still stands if I can be of any help. I'd be happy to help with this documentation, input, proof reading, whatever. There's definately a big lack here and the Samba team already has their hands full. Samba 3 & ADS current capabilities [adr]
Andrew, Thanks for your response. This reply is actually not a request for additional help. After much searching throught the lists and Google along with a lot of experimentation, I think I've got it (mostly) figure out. This post is just an effort to help others who might be struggling with the same issues as I was. I'm sure it's far from perfect and if anyone has suggestions on

FW: backupexec
If you can see the server, but not shares, you most likely have not published any directories. What version of the BE agent are you using? I've noticed 4.6 works well (the install actually works well and will walk you through the setup to publish the directories to be backed up). It's often easier to just publish root (but exclude /proc /tmp). Also, I've found out that in the hosts

Multiple Groups, Different Permissions problem
Hello everyone, I need to setup some directories (in RHL 7.2 running Samba 2.2.3a w/ W2K PDC) to allow multiple groups, each of which has different permissions. If this can be done on the Linux side, this would be preferred, but if it has to be done in Samba, any help in understanding how to make this happen is appreciated. I know Windows NT/W2K allows multiple groups and I would think Linux

ext3-acl & coreutils
G'day... I've installed the acl - xatrrib patch from bestbits and it works nice on my RH9 system with Samba.. the only problem i encounter is that a file or directory losses it's extended atrributes when you copy it.. for example cp "--preserve=all /source /destination" preserves the normal acl af the linux system, but skips the acl/xattrib from bestbits. i used the

Extended Attributes and Access Control Lists
Hello, I have today released an initial version of extended attributes and access control lists for ext3 (patch against the 2.4.13-ac3 kernel). Eric Jarman <ejarman@acm.org> has contributed a lot to this effort. Since I'm not very much into the innards of ext3, can some of you please take a look at the patch, and see whether it contains any flaws (and tell me which flaws)? Thanks! The

kerberos auth fails in samba3.0 alpha23
Hi, I build an alpha23 samba3.0 system in win2k AD domain. Just a few days ago, it works very well. But in recent, I find it cannot work. I am sure it is the reason for kerberos authority. When I kinit a ticket successfully, it fails to run "smbclient \\Win2K-server\c$ -k", the error message will be as blow: Doing spnego session setup (blob length=109) Doing kerberos session setup

samba on a non-active-directory 2k domain plus bestbits ACL suppo rt
I don't know exactly the appropriate list to ask this question in but the web page gave me the impression this was. I don't particularly want to subscribe to the list as I can't handle the volume of messages which I'm not concerned with. I would just like to be able to ask a question concerning the email subject and receive ONLY replys to that message. I'm not too familiar with

ACL: some maybe stupid questions
Hi. I want to use ACL on my RH-9.0 box (x86), so I got ext3 ACL patch from http://acl.bestbits.at/ and tried to apply it to the kernel that ships with RH (2.4.20-8). The patching fails on some vm file so I got a vanila kernel 2.4.20, apply the patch and compile it. This works fine. Also RH-9.0 precompiled Samba 2.2.7 works fine with ACL. I connected to my share with WinXP and do some testing

Unofficial Samba+ACL howto
Hi all, As promised, I have started a howto document on setting up Samba with NT ACL support, based on experiences in my workplace, as documentation for this seems to be on the short side at the moment. It is available at the following address: http://www.bluelightning.org/linux/samba_acl_howto I have yet to convert it to proper DocBook format, and it needs more material (probably
