Minumum memory requirements to run R.
Quite a while back we set the goal of running R in 16Mb RAM, as people (I
think Kjetil) had teaching labs that small.
Since then R has grown, and we has recently started to optimize R for
speed rather than size. I recently tested R-devel on my ancient Win98
notebook with 64Mb RAM -- it ran but startup was rather slow on what I
think is a 233MHz processor and very slow disc.
R still runs in

Win98 client passwords w/Samba 2.2.3a
Hello folks,
I am running Samba 2.2.3a, on a RedHat 7.2 server. So far everything seems to be working fine. I can access shares, print from Windows clients, but I cannot change the password from the Win98 client. When I try, Windows tells me that the old password is incorrect. Here's my smb.conf file

sometime slowness win2k win98
Good people,
I'm new to samba and more experienced with the unix world than the
windows world. I have set up a small system consisting of a samba
server running Samba 2.2.3 and FreeBSD 4.4, two win2k systems and
a win98 notebook. Networking hardware consists of 3com in the FreeBSD
system, whatever 10BaseT stuff is in the motherboards of the windows
systems, and 10BaseT twisted pair and hub.

WLAN support
Hi folks!
First post here, so please don't bother if it's not the right place
to post those kind of questions.
I'm currently running a 4.7-release (upgrade to 4.8 planned but not
yet started) on my production box.
As I would like to setup a small WLAN (major use for my notebook,
other clients are possible) I need to know which cards are really
supported. The handbook is IMHO not

WindowsXP Home and Samba 2.2.3a connection problems
OK, so I looked through all the archives and still can't find a solution.
My server is running RedHat 7.2 with all the latest patches, Samba is also
latest 2.2.3a with domain masters set as "yes" and passwords NOT set as
encrypt, because when I do turn it on, none of the Win98 boxes can log on
(even when I tried to create non-blank password account). All Win98 boxes

Windows XP slow with samba-2.2.7 from RH7.3
Hi.
I posted last week a question about a network with some XP PCs.
One PC connects fine to the samba server, but the other one
is quite slow, almost unusable. There are also Win98 hosts
running fine.
Someone kindly answered he had the same problem, and solved it
upgrading to samba-3 beta. I can't put beta software on this
server.
Do I have any other option ?

XP can see Linux but Win98 can't
Dear Samba List:
Thx in advance for all help that can be provided. I have set up a
samba server on a RedHat 8.0 box, and I know I've got it configured
correctly, because I can do everything I would ever want to do with it
with a networked Windows XP laptop. However, a third and fourth
machine, both running 98SE, also on the network, cannot see the server,
no matter what I try. These two

ii smbfs 2.2.3a-12.3 mount and umount commands for the smbfs...
I want to mount a W2K share as user. Mount as root works fine.

If I try to mount:
erno@flinker:~$ mount /notebook/D:

Strange MS-Access Problems with Samba 2.2.1a
Hello,
something strange happens sometimes with a MS access Database when trying to
open it on a samba share. The database is destroyed and I think the problem
is Samba cause in the database file you can find some log entries from
samba. I got some tips from a german ng but I think it is better to publish
it here cause might be a bug in samba 2.2.1a.
I use samba 2.2.1a on Suse 7.3 and MS Office

unable to browse samba server with Win98, but it works with WinXP
Hello,
I have samba-3.0.10-1.4E.6 bundled with CentOS 4.3 x86_64 and I can't
browse it with Win98. I have a very simple setup, Share type, with
access to everyone.
If I double-click on the server name from Win98, I have this message:
"\\server is not accessible. This device does not exist on the
network."
If I type the whole path to the share(ex: \\server\transfer), in
Win98, it

Win98 policies,profiles and logon scripts
I am running Samba 2.2.3a and have my users logging into the 'samba
domain'. My WinNT and WinXP users are working fine with roaming profiles
and policies. My problem is my Win98 users. The logon script doesn't seem
to be working, i.e. when I log onto a Win98 machine (logging into the
domain), the logon script doesn't run. I have opened up the permissions to
the logon script

string to long for hosts allow in smb.conf
We have found that a number of users (especially notebook user with
Win95) try to change their IP-address to get more permissions when they
login to the network. Since we have a database with all of the systems
registered and we already automatically build our configuration files
when something changing in this database (MySql), we tried to block the
unregistered IP number by expanding the hosts

SMB slow by design?
Hello list,
I have observed quite low bandwidth usage when copying files over SMB.
This happens for at least three cases I have tested:
* Windows 98 SE reading from a Samba 3.0.22 smbd
* Windows XP reading from a Samba 3.0.23d
* smbclient reading from 127.0.0.1 (3.0.23d)
According to iptraf, the average transfer rate was oscillating between
8604.60 kbps and 8654.20 kbit/s, copying a

Installation test fails: 2.04b
I'm brand new to Samba and I am trying to set in up on our network (linux
OS). We have two windows clients: a notebook running win95 (soon to be
win98) and a virtual machine running win98. Right now, the host is running
RH 5.2 with the 2.0.36 kernel.
Samba-2.04b was installed from the rpm. I'm using Carter and Sharpe's
"Teach Yourself Samba in 24 Hours" as my guide. On

Wierd problem with file sharing over internet.
I've set up a CIPE VPN, between my notebook computer and my Linux based
firewall. While the VPN generally works well, I've noticed a strange
problem with file sharing from the local network to the notebook. I set
up the VPN, with the idea of accessing my systems at home via a dial up
ISP, to my home network via cable modem. The VPN works well for most
protocols, such as telnet,

Behaviour of R with win98 and XP?
Dear list,
I encounter a strange problem: I hav R (1.6.1) installed on a notebook with
winXP-Prof and a similar installation (same path names etc.) on a desktop
computer with W98.
I use rcmd BATCH filename to display graphs from the data stored in filename.
With R on my notebook everything works fine. I have the same data, the same
filenames, the same paths on th w98-computer. Here I see just a
