problem with dying nmbd
hello, I have samba 2.2.6 version compiled on RH Linux 7.2. It used to work without any problem for some time but all of a sudden I could not see my shares from Windows PC's. One of the samba processes: nmbd is dying. After restarting samba service smb restart nmbd will last about a few second and will stop. Any advice what it could be I will greatly appreciate. best regards Slawomir

Cannot Sync Browser Lists
I run an IPsec/Freeswan VPN to connect 4 disparet windows LANS. I managed to RTFM until cross-subnet browsing worked (samba 2.0). Having upgraded to 2.2.3 It would seem that this feature is not working. BACKGROUND: originally all sources of information led me to understand that I would need a box running samba behind the firewall/IPsec box as I could not even ping a remote internal IP from the

Upgraded to 3.0.2a but...
Hi folks :-) I've just downloaded Samba 3.0.2a, run ./configure , make and make install. All seemed to go OK but my system still appears to be running the previous 2.2.8a version. New installation seems to have placed smbd, nmbd and swat into /usr/local/samba/sbin (older ver was in /usr/sbin) so I changed the entries in /etc/rc.d/rc.samba to show correct path and now smbd/nmbd are not

no wins registering?
I have multiple samba servers. smb1 is my master, smb2 is a slave. My master has this: name resolve order=wins hosts bcast # wins server=127.0.0.1 wins support=yes The Slave has this: name resolve order=wins hosts bcast # wins server=<IP OF Master> wins support=no After 24 hours the Master forgets who the slave is. If I restart the slave he notifies the master who

Default settings for print drivers
Hi. I've finally got Samba to serve up print drivers for the printers I serve. However, I'm not able to set the default driver options. This is what I'm doing (from a Win2k Pro box) Start->Run \\(samba server) open Printers folder right click printer, Properties Device Settings tab Configure e.g. default paper size Click OK Reopen Properties->Device Settings, and the old paper

Using working devmode from windows clients on samba server?
Samba 2.2.7a (built from samba RPM's) with LPRng print subsystem. I've been having troubles with some print drivers which fail to work properly when uploaded to the samba server whether devmode gets left as null or a default devmode is used. Some drivers do not leave you in a position where you can "tickle" the driver to generate a devmode with page orientation etc before

Problem with winbind (is this the right list?)
I'm running a RedHat 8.0 system. Pretty much stock. But I uninstalled the version of samba, samba-common and samba-client that came with it. Instead I downloaded a tarball from samba.org. I have just finished compiling and installing samba 2.2.7 using the --with-pam --with-smbmount --with-winbind options during configure. I also made the necessary changes to smb.conf,

Samba 3 with Unix passwd authentication?
We are a primarily Linux company with a NIS backend, but we keep a couple "bridge boxes" for Windows users (on a Windows PDC) to connect to their unix accounts and access data. Under Samba 2.2, this was fairly easy with "encrypt passwords = no" turned on. But I can't figure out how to make it work with Samba 3. Does Samba 3 not support a unix passwd backend, or am I

winbind, getent fails
Hello, I am having a problem that seems to have plagued quite a few people on the list, yet I have been unable to resolve the issue by making any of the suggested changes. I am trying to get winbind to work, and have been able to get wbinfo -u and wbinfo -g to list the users and groups from the NT domain. wbinfo -t returns secret is good. I have shut down the nscd, but this has not helped. I am

printer configuration issue
I've installed Samba 2.2.7a on my SuSE 8.1 system in an effort to persuade it to act as a print server on my LAN, which consists of it and 6 Windows desktops of various flavors. Right away it seemed to allow file sharing and printing from DOS and became browsable from the Network Neighborhood, but I can't get it to print from Windows. I keep getting a Status of "Access denied,

Please help me correct this. Thanks, --EdB <tkged@earthlink.net> Here's the smb.conf file: [global] netbios name = Server01 workgroup = TKG os level = 64 preferred master

winbindd problems
Hello, I'm trying to use the nsswitch module. Everything compiled fine and I was happy to see my NT-domain-users with getent passwd. BUT getent passwd MYDOM+myuser doesn't work. ls -l returns only numeric uid's for domain members. After I tried a ls -l , getent passwd returns only the local users for some seconds. If I try it again 30 sec later I get the complete list again. I

Usernames with dots
Now that I have winbind working, life is good. However, I've hit upon a real kick in the pants. As you can see from my email address, we have a convention here of usernames being firstname.lastname. So, when I go to change the owner ship of a file: $ chown chris.palmer myfile Linux thinks I mean user chris, group palmer, and says "invalid group" (there is no palmer group,
