Roaming/local profiles behavior in XP
Hey all,
Relatively new to Samba configuration here - I've set up a system where
XP clients can login and get their roaming profiles and all is well
with that, but I see the synchronization which takes place on logout to
be a big problem. So, I'm looking to turn off roaming profiles and
instead go with remapping the documents, desktop and pictures folders
to their server

authentication problem
Hi,
I have 4 Samba servers DC1, DC2, DC3, SRV8. DC3 is a domain controller and
file server, SRV8 is a file server.
Sometimes one/another computer cannot mount network shares from SRV8. We
can log in on that computer, but when we try to mount a network share,
Windows asks credentials for the share, but doesn't accept it. When we log
in with another user on the same computer, the result is the

How to keep local profiles when joining domain?
Hi
I hope someone can help
We currently have Windows
XP Professional PCs that logon to an old Novell Netware
3.12 server. We?re just using the standard Windows
Netware client, and each user has a Windows XP User
account and password that matches their Novell one.
When they logon to Windows, they are automatically
authenticated to Novell.
However, we are now in the final stages of

sorry, the darn reply to got me again

can you remote regedit from linux?
if so, you can execute on logon from the samba server a push of the keys,
you can even make a queue of pushes that run only once.

Local Profiles only
Hello,
I have set smb.conf to turn off roaming profiles by putting "logon path"
and "logon home" as blank entries. However, I find that if I attempt to
login as an user in a Windows machine that does not already have a
local profile for that user, I get "Unable to logon as DOMAINNAME is not
available" or something like that... It does not create an automatic

frustration samba and LDAP
did someone really try to make this complicated or did it really just
turn out this way?? How can any of you use LDAP with its..
cn=xyz ou=abc godknows=whatelse ..complicated syntax.
I thought learning command line Linux was hard....I don't want to go
through that again!
*) frustrations not withstanding...I do sincerely thank the Samba team
for a package which has served us well for 3 years.

samba and RODC
Hi
I am trying to setup samba (rhel6/centos 6.2) and I am having some issues.
So what I have is
Server A (centos 6.2)
It exists in my DMZ so very limited access to thing. Juts mainly DNS and some ports for RODC
Sever B (W2k8r2)
RODC, exists in my insecure vlan, stepping stone into the DMZ (dmz-inside)
My Windows box work fine talking to the RODC
When I try wbinfo -u it fails. I have opened

Roaming profiles problem
Hey all,
I've got a few WinXP workstations logging into a 2.2.4pre (CVS from April
30th, around 8 p.m. PDT) PDC, and I'm having some sort of odd problem with
roaming profiles.
The XP workstations can successfully (it seems) retrieve and save thier
profiles to the samba box; however, if I log off a user, say "gary", from
one workstation, and travel to the next one, and log in

authentication problem after upgrade to Debian Jessie
Hi,
I upgraded our servers from Wheezy to Jessie. I use samba in classic mode,
with openldap backend. After the upgrade, on the PDC (srv3) everything
seems to be ok, it authetnicates, the netlogon share is accessible on it,
but on the BDC (srv7), what is the file server, the authentication doesn't
work, shares are inaccessible.
I compared and syncronized the configuration files to as similar

Possibly problem with case of filenames ?
Hi,
i'm having a little problem with samba (or Windows98 ?).
The story :
I'm using the program WHFC (Windows Hylafax Client) on
a W2k and Win98-client.
Samba 2.2.5 is running on Suse LINUX 7.1 Kernel 2.4.18.
The WHFC-program uses a share on the LINUX-server
(actually the share contains tif-images of received
faxes).
No problems with W2k, but with Win98.
The WHFC-client shows the

Samba 4 + Windows XP very slow - especially noticeable with many files
Hi,
After our upgrade from Samba 3.x to 4.1.6 we are having major
performance issues. Today, I've been able to nail it down to a simple
test case.
What strikes me is that Windows XP takes about 25 seconds for one job,
while it only costs 3 seconds on Windows 7.
I have two tests:
1000 files of 10k each (total ~10Mb):
* Linux on localhost or a remote host (1GE or 10GE): 5.5 seconds

access denied when trying to connect XP to samba-2.2.1a-4 PDC
Ok, Heres the setup: RH 7.2 with samba-2.2.1a-4. I have had samba as a
PDC for sometime now, and WINNT & WIN2k systems have no problem logging
on to the domain. Whenever I try from my XP pro test sys, I get:
The following error occurred attempting to join the domain "WORKGROUP";
Access is denied.
I do have a trust account set up for this system, and I manually added

Joining a Samba 3 domain repost
Sorry still unable to find documentation
Hello
I have set up a Samba 3 PDC on RHEL4 using the tdbsam backed. I can log
in as a user who has been added to the tdbsam database from a
workstation. When I try to add the workstation to the domain (after
breaking user connections to the server) I get "The following error

Backquote in R syntax
Hi Folks,
Can someone satisfy my curiosity (well, at least about
the following query!)
Reading the draft proofs of an article I've been asked
to look through, I find the typesetter has set what
would normally be entered as
source("xyz.R") or source('xyz.R')
as
source(`xyz.R')
i.e. it has come out with an opening backquote, then
xyz.R, then a closing forward

Edit Windows XP registry with wines regedit?
Hi,
is it possible to edit the registry of an installed Windows XP under Linux
with wine's regedit? I've replaced my mainboard which has a different
chipset. So this crappy Windows XP doesn't want to boot now.

Move from roaming to local profiles
We are migrating all of our users from the current domain to a new one we created. In this process we are moving them from roaming profiles to local. What would be the best practice to accomplish this? I can find plenty of writeups on how to do the opposite. Also we will be doing some extra folder redirection. Currently we only redirect their my documents to the server. On the new system we plan

I understand that this just creates the need to run some
chown/chgrp-commands after correcting smb.conf and restarting samba?
