Home directories
Hi all. YAP (Yet Another Problem). I recently posted about the correct
way to deal with encrypted vs nonencrypted passwords. I've gotten that to
work, but I don't think its correct. So I'd still appreciate any ideas.
Now my problem is I can browse the list of shares, but can't use any of
them. This is NT4, Linux 2.0.31-pre9, samba-1.9.17p1. No SP3 patch
applied.

ext2->ext3 empty file creation
Hello,
I am using kernel version 2.4.7-10
I upgraded one of the ext2 partition to ext3.
the partitions are nearly empty.
I ran a program to create empty files, having names in
lexicographical order. The time taken to create empty
files (100 .. 100000) is same on an ext2 partition and
a ext3 partition.
Can anyone pls. tell me why there is no difference in
the time taken.
Is the htree algo.

Unable to see linux files on windows using Samba
Hi,
I installed Samba on the only linux server that
we have on our network.
On the Linux server, I was able to mount various shared
directories from various windows machines ( we use windows 2000 )
So, seeing windows files on linux is not a problem.
We also wanted to go the other way( seeing linux files on windows )
I searched on google but to no avail. I set the lmhosts file and
still nothing

linux newbie classes taught by Chris de Vidal
In one of your replies to the attention newbies...
series, you mentioned you teach a linux newbie class.
I'm interested (seriously, or sarcasm) in checking out
one of your seminars. Where do I get information?

RE: [Asterisk] How to select server ardware?
Hi Chris,
I know this is quite an old email, but I was browsing through the archive :)
I am currently working on "embedding" asterisk in one of Allwell's STB's.
The idea is more or less exactly like yours. The STB will be solid-state
and contain OS, Asterisk, Basic configuration and voice files on a flash
disk. It will boot up and get a network share via DHCP. This network

Using libFLAC++
samples in FLAC are always signed. they must be signed going
into the encoder (flac converts unsigned samples to signed)
and they come out of the decoder signed.

Re: iso 2.00 isolinux: Checksum error, sorry... workaround
Hi,
I have a HP pavillion laptop zt1170 and I faced the
same problem reported by,
Greg Lonnon greg at lonnon.org

This seems to be some problem with the HP bios.
Since this laptop does not have a floppy drive it is
almost impossible to install redhat 8.0. I managed to
workaround this problem by doing a minimal
installation of 7.2 and then copying the vmlinuz from

Attention newbies, an apology.. I WASN'T slamming you.
I'm sorry I gave the appearance I was slamming you.
The tone was supposed to be "Please, help yourself
first, here's why... here's ALL of the resources I use
to help myself." I've successfully been able to keep
questions about Samba to this list down to a minimum
by first consulting all of my sources and perhaps you
can, too.
As I read it again, it had the appearance

RE: pam_mount ( was RE: Help with Winbind )
After a little experimentation, I've come up with this:
create a directory as a temp mount point (chmod 777) called /home.domainuser
or something similar and assign the template homedir variable to it. This
works for the first login, but I'm looking for advice on how I can rm -rf
the whole thing to clean it up for the next user. Additionally, I noticed
that it doesn't actually mount

RE: pam_mount ( was RE: Help with Winbind )
Well, I've started to look at pam_mount and it seems it doesn't compile
under RH8.0 because it's missing pam_modules.h. I've located that in the
source for pam. It's found in pam-0.75-46.8.0.src.rpm.
The error I get is during the configure part:
checking for security/pam_modules.h... no
configure: error: You are missing security/pam_modules.h

I've been reading this list for a few weeks now and
I've given advice on questions that look challenging

Though I don't count myself an expert, I've known

don't invest some time before asking a question. I

I buy flowers at a local market on a fairly regular basis. The flower
vendors post their prices and if I want to buy only one or two flowers I
will generally get the posted price. From time to time I want to buy large
quantities of flowers, and sometimes a vendor will give me a better price
than their posted price for the bulk order, but more often I have to offer

An easy & great contribution to yourself, family, neighborhood and society
Dear Sir/Ma'am:
It is significantly beneficial to your local (public, private, school, college, institutional, or ...) library and its patrons to have a book titled
"Complete Conduct Principles for the 21st Century" by Dr. John Newton.
Please kindly suggest to your local library(ies) that the book be purchased. This is an easy but GREAT & respectable contribution you can

Groups with Samba domain controler or domain member
Does anybody know more about groups? I am considering switching from NT
to Samba domain and have made some test. Unfortunately I need to make
two additional groups, except Domain Admin (one of them is Domain
Users). Is it possible to make that with the stable version of Samba?
And another, but not so important (for now) question. Currently I have a
Samba server, providing files and printers

Help with Winbind
I've been trying for weeks to get winbind working with RedHat Linux 8.0.
I've got everything setup per the winbind docs on
http://www.samba.org/samba/docs/Samba-HOWTO-Collection.html#WINBIND.
I've successfully joined my NT4 domain with smbpasswd -j DOMAIN -r PDC -U
Administrator. Running wbinfo -u returns my domain user list, as well as
wbinfo -g returning my domain groups. getent

We've recently moved from 2.2.2a on Suse using PDC authentication with
local accounts created, to 2.2.8a on Debian with Winbind authentication.
We are mapping shares on user's machines via a login script.
So here's the problem several users are losing access to their home
directory mappings. In other words, we are mapping their home
