FireWall Effects on Samba (Newbie)
Dear List, I have been wrestling with getting Samba 2.2.5 on Redhat 7.1 working on a Windows NT network containing W2K, W98 and Mac machines. I can see the Samba server (gargoyle) from the Win machines fine, but cannot browse any shares (Network unreachable error message). This seems a relatively common problem, but seems harder to resovle in my case :-) I have walked through the toubleshooting

Printing - "lprm command" not getting executed
I am attempting to get printing services for Windows 2000 clients working with Samba on a Red Hat 7.2 box. The problem is I can not cancel print jobs (either from a PC or the local smb client). File sharing, and printing other than this problem, work fine. Here is a listing of configuration and system info: 1) the samba packages installed, 2) output of "uname -a", 3) the

ipchains - major newbie trap
Just a quick word - I spent two days trying to get Samba to work. The whole problem was a lack of knowledge about ipchains (firewall). It was part of the RH7.1 install package, and the medium security setting stops all tcp and udp traffic for a lot of ports, including those needed for NetBIOS (137-139) It is pretty easy to fix, the IPCHAINS-HOWTO is a good and humorous read, and by the end of

Desperately needing help with Samba
I have been trying to setup Samba on my home network but... it is giving me a hard time. I went to the diagnosis.txt that comes with Redhat 7.2 and tried some of the tests. I tried the first three and on the first one I got an error message. "session request to [servername] failed (Not listening for calling name". I got a second one in that same first test "session request to

SV: SV: Problem regarding installation
OK! I'm sorry about this. As I wrote earlier I'm totally lost... but I will try to explain the problem in steps bellow, ok. 1. I installed the rpm's for samba, Version 2.0.2a-ssl I think this is the version distributed with redhat linux 7.0 2. Then I changed the parameters in the /etc/samba/smb.conf file, and in this file I added the folowing parameters. [global] netbios name

Unable to see linux files on windows using Samba
Hi, I installed Samba on the only linux server that we have on our network. On the Linux server, I was able to mount various shared directories from various windows machines ( we use windows 2000 ) So, seeing windows files on linux is not a problem. We also wanted to go the other way( seeing linux files on windows ) I searched on google but to no avail. I set the lmhosts file and still nothing

Problems Printing w/ Caldera OpenServer
I am having problems getting Samba configured so I can print. I am going from Windows XP to Samba. I don't get any error messages in Windows saying that there is a problem. It sends the document then that is it. It is like the document gets lost. I am able to print through Linux and WebMin. What should I look at next? I am using the latest version of Caldera OpenServer. I believe the version

domain users in local groups
Can I actually create a "Domain Users" group on my samba server and add users to it like I did with the Domain Admins group? That would be easier than adding each user individually on each folder that they need to access... (It's always easier to add DOMAIN\Domain Users instead of DOMAIN\User1 DOMAIN\User2...etc) Or just add Domain Users to the local Power Users group. Jim

2 issues using SAMBA as a print server
I am using SAMBA/Lprng to do printer accounting for charge-back. There are two technical issues I have not been able to resolve. 1. When attempting to connect to the printer from a Windows box in the domain (the SAMBA server is simply a server that's a member of the domain, it is not the PDC) I get the message that the server does not have the appropriate driver and then it pops up a setup

File Permissions
I have set up Samba so that all users on my small network can read from my one of my Linux shares as well as write to that share. However, when user A saves a file to that share, user B can't open it -- and vice versa. How can I set up samba so that all files written to that share can be read, modified, and deleted by all users? Thanks in advance for an answer to this question.

Samba Printing
Good Afternoon, We recently added encrypted smb passwords to our site. I just tried to add a printer to samba and it will not work. I tried to connect to \\sambahost\printer and it will not connect. All the older printers still work. I just wonder if there is an extra step I need to perform now when I add printers? Thanks for your time, Bill -- William M. Fennell Network Administrator

Starting an both port 139 and 445
Hello, I've have an installation where some clients run via a VPN tunnel and modem and that makes W2k clients to connect on port 445, but i need to have it running on port 139 as well so i start smbd for port 445 via inetd and nmbd and smbd on port 139 as daemons. But now for my problem, some local clients have problems when printing, they get permission denied, could that be due to this? And

File Creation Dates Question
Hi all, I searched the archives for a solution to this issue but didn't find any thing. I have an office with a mix of PCs running ME and XP that use Samba 2.2.7 under RH Linux 7.3 as an archive for mortgage information. When documents are moved to the Samba share, the file creation timestamp on the Linux box reflects the time the files were created on the PCs. What I need is for the

File "In Use" when it's not... problem
Hi. Occasionally a problem crops up with "File already in use by another user" when it isn't !! This is usually a Lotus organiser data file which is on the RH8/Samba 2.2.7 server. I can't find a way of clearing this "Lock" except by rebooting the server... there must be a better way, any ideas ? Thanks Mike --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Scanned with
