very low speed local network browsing from win xp clients
Hi Everyone there! We have a very annoying problem since several months when browsing the local network (workgroup) from win xp clients (from win98 clients it's almost OK). The machines in the workgroup appearing very slooow (about 15-20 sec), and this value doesn't change even in the 2nd or 3rd browse. We have 1 linux (debian 2.4.21 pre 3) pc, running the samba (2.2312) server, about 15

system error 64, win xp and samba
Just so that it gets into the archives for future googlers: If you get 'system error 64' on a windows xp machine trying to connect to samba, then make sure you have nothing running on port 445. I had an apache ssl instance running on that port. Doh! Had to scratch my head a bit over it. XP doesn't actually need anything to be on 445, it just gets confused and gives up if there is.

win xp home media edition / Samba 3.023c
I have an issue where one client machine (out of 10, the only one running 'xp home media') is being forced off periodically and closing XP's file browser. It seems to be random. My Samba configuration is a simple one -- just sharing files, it is not handling authentication. All other clients work as expected: Log in, for the first time, access as many times as desired after the

Strange locking errors with LabView under Samba 2.2.7 and HP-UX 1 1.11
Hello All, I recently upgraded one of my HP-UX servers from Samba 2.2.4 to 2.2.7. Since that time, I have noticed that disk activity on the file system where the Samba var directory is kept seems to be higher than I would expect. We have now begun to experience a problem with PC clients running National Instruments' LabView software, installed on a Samba share. When any PC client tries to

WG: Samba 2.2.7a and XP pro
Dear Michael, I just have the same problem you have with samba 2.2.3a on a Suse 8.0 machine and win xp pro. Besides I performed all the steps below. >From my postings I learned that the prob might have something to do with a wrong mapping in smbusers file. It seems to me that the workstation account is mapped to user nobody. Up to now I was not able to solve the prob. Do you have any ideas

Win XP 'Network path was not found' Error when connecting to Samba share
I am running a network with 2 XP boxes and 1 RH8.0 box running Samba 2.2.8a (bin pkg). I have also tried Samba 2.2.5 (the included distro ver.) and Samba 3 (not in depth though). I have added my WinXP username/passwd to smbpasswd and to the Linux User list. I've tried encrypt passwords and have even tried playing with the 'gpedit.msc' in Win XP to turn off encryption to 3rd party

Serious recurring problem with Samba 2.2.7
Hey guys, I'm new to watching the list, and while I'll be looking through the archives as soon as I'm done sending this, I thought I ought to post my problem anyway. I'm running 2.2.7 on two machines on my network, with a 2k server running WINS. Periodically, when samba is running, network traffic to various places dies. It gets restored, and it dies, randomly. Most of the time,

Persistant Z drive in XP
Hello. New to SAMBA.(2.2.8 on RH9) Mixed environment of 98 & (trying) XP. My "net use s: /home" command works wonderfully for XP and 98. But XP throws in an "extra" "more home-than-home" directory - namely \username\.win_profile on the Z drive. I've tried disconnecting it with: net use Z: /delete, but XP claims to have a process running on it (even after 10

win ME/Samba connection
Ok, believe it or not, I've looked through all 209 pages of the Samba-HOWTO_Collection.pdf plus used this mail list and other internet sources, used those recommendations, tried almost every possible iteration on the samba.conf file, looked at logs until nauseated and have concluded that there is no way that Windows ME can connect to a Linux box using Samba. Connecting to the WinME box from

Adding XP to a samba domain
Bare with me please :-) I know this question has probably been asked before but a quick overview of the archives didn't help me out. Couple of parts 1. Can a samba domain be established that doesn't require registry hacks on an XP machine to add the XP machine? 2. What would a VERY basic smb.conf file look like that creates a samba domain for W2K and XP machines? 3. Does anyone

Samba/Windows XP and SSH tunnelling
Hi, I've been trying to get SSH tunnelling working with Samba. I'm using a Windows XP and a RedHat 8.0 box. I've closely followed the instructions from the HOWTO manual in order to set this up to no avail. I think the problem comes from the fact that my lmhosts file has no effect on the NetBIOS name cache when I preload it with the command 'nbtstat -R'. I checked the

X flag in smbpasswd?
mksmbpasswd.sh does not create accounts with the X flag in the password flags field. Does this X matter, and if so, what does it mean? Printing OK on 98, "Access denied" on XP Pro
I have a very simple setup on a Solaris 8 server, running Samba 3.0.1 (see smb.conf below). A desktop PC running Windows 98 (SE?) happily connects to and prints to my one shared printer, but an XP Pro laptop takes a loooong time to install the local driver and then just says "Access denied, unable to connect". I already told it to use a client driver and disabled spoolss. Here's

Folder Redirection with NT4 Domains
Hi, I'd like to hear off-list from anyone who is currently successfully using folder redirection with an NT4 domain controller. If you are doing this, please would help me to understand your secret. There are two ways I know of that should work, however I have received feedback from separate sources that claim problems with both of these methods. I would like to include in the new book
