second post. I have managed to get some browsing working with samba. I have followed the instructions to set up a wins server but my wins server is not working. it's not holding any names, it's not resolving any names. I can cat $sambahome/var/locks/wins.dat and see my hostnames (with other crap) but none will resolve.... well, I take that back, hosts will resolve on the SAME NETWORK but I can't do this WINS SERVER IP = 206.206.178.2 TICKER=206.206.178.5 that resolves NOMAD=198.232.139.5 that will not resolve. Scott ps: please... I just installed a new version of samba. does wins simply not work? pps: are the only ports that are needed tcp/139 and udp/137? not tcp/udp 138 ? Scott
First thing: This kind of question really belongs on the samba@samba.org list. Many of these problems have already been solved by others. The Samba-Technical list is intended for developer discussions of technical issues regarding the CIFS/SMB/NetBIOS mess^h^h^h^hprotocol suite. I have taken the liberty of moving this thread to that list. That said...> I came accross your message in the SAMBA newsgroup and it seemed to me that > you know a lot about browsing.Hahaheehoo! We've fooled you! ;)> I currecntly run a WINS server in a 2000+ > machine nework, however, browsing in windows sucks!Sound's like the opinion an expert would give.> it takes forever for > all hte machines to appear (15) and most of the time not all machines do > appear. my question is actually composed of two parts > > 1) is there a way to get Network Neighborhood to show ALL computers on the > network which it gets from the WINS server, even after 1 hour, you sitll > only see a fraction of the computers (No, the WINS database is not > corrupted)The key thing here is that WINS does *not* provide the browse list. The two protocols are related only because browsing uses WINS for name resolution. Sometimes. The only other connection is that Browsing sends messages over the NetBIOS Name Service port (which is nasty, but it does it anyway). That's UDP/137. Beyond that, browsing is a separate protocol. Are all of these 2000-odd machines in the same Workgroup or NT Domain?> 2) Most imporantly!! - is there a way to QUERY the NT WINS server for ALL > of it registered computers... ???There may be. Hi, Please CC me on all replies. I'm not on the list! This is my nmb.log and I don't know why it's not able to connect to a wins server. I ust Wins yes and _NO_ IP in the Wins field. On the W2k the Wins Ip is that of the server. With all this talk about a WINS server, I was wondering what the advantages/disadvantages are of them. My System consists is a RH7.3 server as a PDC with Samba 2.2.7a and 3 Win98se clients, the newest CUPS for an eventual printer server. Thanks. Kev

You will find in the docs directory a file called Samba-HOWTO-Collection.pdf - you need to read the section called "Integrating MS Windows Networks with Samba" It is Chapter 2.> My System consists is a RH7.3 server as a PDC with Samba 2.2.7a and 3 > Win98se clients, the newest CUPS for an eventual printer server. > Thanks. > Kev >- John T. -- John H Terpstra Email: jht@samba.org -------------- next part -------------- -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba
The biggest advantage I found was that it enabled cross network browsing on my small home system. Nazrul, Firstly, we are working on a new tool to implement static WINS addresses for samba-3. This tool may or may not make it into 3.0.0. Secondly, given what you describe below you do NOT need static WINS addresses. Step 1. Make sure that samba is configured as a WINS server. In smb.conf [globals] wins support = yes Step 2. Make sure all your MS Windows client get the WINS server address _AND_ are set to NetBIOS node type 8. Example DHCP server config file: /etc/dhcpd.conf: ---------------- option ntp-servers 192.168.1.1; allow unknown-clients; default-lease-time 86400; max-lease-time 172800; option domain-name "world.org"; option domain-name-servers 192.168.1.1; option netbios-name-servers 192.168.1.1; option netbios-dd-server 192.168.1.1; option netbios-node-type 8; subnet 192.168.1.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 { range dynamic-bootp 192.168.1.128 192.168.1.254; option subnet-mask 255.255.255.0; option routers 192.168.1.1; allow unknown-clients; } Step 3. Read the Samba-HOWTO-Collection.pdf http://samba.org/~jht/NT4migration/Samba-HOWTO-Collection.pdf See chapters: 9 and 23. Hope this helps. - John T. Hi, Is there a way of viewing the current WINS entries which samba knows about??? Hello ! I have a database server running in a RH9 machine with two networks interfaces, but the second interface (10.0.1.1) does only clustering with another server, i have a PDC and WINS Server resident on a Win2000 machine. I had have troubles on find my linux machine in a network neighborhood from a Win machine. So i verified the linux machine registration in WINS server and i could see the linux machine register points to eth1 interface (10.0.1.1 - The second interface). Because this i can't find my linux machine from windows machines. How can i configure my samba server to register the first interface (eth0) in WINS? Thanks for any help.
