CentOS 4.4 LILO Raid (also e2fsprogs in general)
i noticed that the 4.4 upgrade broke LILO on Raid...
it gave errors on partitions not on the primary disk
along the lines of "/dev/dis: no such device"...
even explicitly installing the boot sector on each
device in the array, while it allowed the system
to boot, gave errors at boot time and did not
display the CentOS boot screen anymore...
i solved the problem by creating a

MD5 passwords in Red Hat Linux 6.1
Hello,
Recently I realized that entering first 8 characters from my root
password is enough to log in as root although I've enabled MD5
passwords in installation program. Also I've added two other users
during installation. After looking through /etc/shadow it seems that
root's password isn't md5 although passwords of other two users are
md5.
Is it correct behaviour?

keytab-lilo included with SYSLINUX is not up to date
Hi,
I just noticed that the keytab-lilo utility included with SYSLINUX isn't
up to date. It *is* a problem since the old version isn't compatible
with current distributions like Debian ou Ubuntu (for example).
Two options are offered to those who would like to use keytab-lilo in
order to generate a file compatible with the KBDMAP directive :
- use an up to date version of keytab-lilo

Booting CentOS with LILO?
Hello all!
I would like to know if is possible to use LILO as the boot loader
instead of the default GRUB. My question comes because I tried to run
lilo command but the message "command not found" appear. It sounds
like my only boot loader option in CentOS is GRUB ??.
I found lilo.conf.anaconda, but not the lilo command. From already

[PATCH] keytab-lilo: update to support kbd 2.0.3 format
Since kbd 2.0.3 (commit 6ff47cf2) the format generated by 'loadkeys -m' has
changed slightly, using "unsigned short" instead of "u_short"

Re: syslinux] syslinux vs grub
Hello HPA,
I think on harddisks, Syslinux is going to lose somehow from other bootloaders like LILO, Grub and others.
However, SYSLINUX is still VERY usefull for removable media like diskettes, Zipdisks, USB Flash keys, etc..
I don't know if the fact that Syslinux is now installed using blockmapping is really breaking the usefullness for harddisks. You already mentioned system attribute

[OT] Red Hat binary compatibility, from Red Hat Linux 4.0 to Fedora Core 3 (and RHEL4) ...
I wrote part of a FAQ last November, and if you're interested in the
breakdown of GCC, GLibC and kernel adoption since Red Hat Linux 4.0,
you'll want to read this:
http://www.geocities.com/thebs413/RH-Distribution-FAQ-3.html
I've been loosely working on a "Linux Configuration Management" book
covering Red Hat distributions since. I might update this FAQ if I have

New hack against BSD, Linux is _mostly_ safe from it.
My housemate has formalized a sortof new attack against unix-style
operating systems. He''s a BSD fan, so that''s where he developed the
attack. He asked me to check Linux, which I did. It seems Linux is
not vulnerable to it. This attack is going out to BUGTRAQ tonight.
The attack isn''t too serious because it requires physical access to
the console, but it
