File "In Use" when it's not... problem
Hi. Occasionally a problem crops up with "File already in use by another user" when it isn't !! This is usually a Lotus organiser data file which is on the RH8/Samba 2.2.7 server. I can't find a way of clearing this "Lock" except by rebooting the server... there must be a better way, any ideas ? Thanks Mike --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Scanned with

Running a login script
Hello all, We are trying to find a way to run login scripts for our users but all the How-To files seem rather complicated :-( We have been using Samba for several years and all our users have Windows 2000 PCs, Samba accounts etc. They log into their Windows with a username/password OK. The Samba server is set up with the same username/password combination as their PCs so they don't have

plea for sample config files : accessing samba from windows...
Hello, I am having a lot of difficulty setting up samba (2.2.6-1) on linux (REDHAT 7.2), and accessing from Win2k. I have been able to get the share working for smbclient, while on the LINUX box, but have not been able to get anything working from a Windows box. I have done the following after scouring the network for solutions. I have modified the register settings on windows to allow none

D(COM) with Excel
Hi there, I'm currently trying to use R in an automated macro with Excel, and to this effect I've been using the D(COM) server. However I've been having alot of problems with it, because it seems to be limited to only recieving and sending arrays. I've been struggling trying to find a way to receive model summaries from R to put in Excel. I also seem to have some strange errors

Desperate Help Required Getting SAMBA back on line
I am running SAMBA on Red Hat 7.0 and after a bad upgrade my SAMBA server is dead. I ended up re-installing from the source and now my server is not accessible to our Win9x clients. smbstatus show the server running but no one on the network can see the server. I am still a bit of a newbie and I am having trouble troubleshooting this. I really am in a jam and I need some help ASAP. I am not

File Locking
Hi, I'm running smbd 2.2.8. I'm a little green when it comes to file locking with samba. I have two users that access a single data file on a FreeBSD box. It's a moneydance data file and obviously it gets messed-up if two users are writing to it at the same time. Is there a way with samba to stop a second instance of the file from being opened, something like a "File In

Problems with TDBs on CTDB-managed Samba instance
Hi All, My site has two separate clustered Samba instances (managed by two independent CTDB instances) running over GPFS. In the last couple of weeks, we have seen a recurring issue that causes the `smbd` process in *one* of these instances to become unresponsive (as seen by CTDB), which results in flapping of CTDB and multiple IP takeover runs. The symptoms that we observe are: 1) Samba

preexec, logging, and my problem
okay so after trying a bit to understand how all of this works i think i need a bit more support. thanks to joel, my problem where users can log on multiple times looks like it has a solution. to prevent this, he outlined a process by which one can monitor the process IDs of samba users, then user smbstatus grep for that user, find the process id, and then do whatever i want with them. in this

strangely lingering lock, samba 3.0.22
Hello everyone, Today a user (call them 'abc') came to me and described the following sequence of events: 1. They opened an Excel file, made some changes, saved it, and closed it. 2. They tried to open it again and got an error dialog within Excel that says this: File in Use FooBar.xls is locked for editing by 'abc'. Open

error message in smbd.log file: bind failed on port 139 socket_addr = 0.0.0.0.
I can run nmbd successfully, but smbd dies almost immediately when I run it, the smbd.log file has the message "bind failed on port 139 socket_addr = 0.0.0.0.". When I do a netstat -an | grep 139, it shows that tcp is listening on port 139. How do I resolve this conflict between tcp and smbd?

Oplocks - samba 2.2.4 & Windows 2000 server
In investigating some performance issues (elderly server with just 10Mbps ethernet), I noticed that smbstatus reported hardly any open files with oplocks. In particular files opened with Office 2000 & XP stay un-oplocked. I have checked and testparm claims oplocks are enabled and manual says this is so by default. The clients are all Windows 2000 servers - so we have 1 samba connection with

Checking validity of NHS numbers
Hello I need to check that the NHS numbers in my database are valid. I''m storing them as ten-digit strings: the first nine are the identifier and the tenth is a check digit. There are four steps to calculating the check digit (from http://www.connectingforhealth.nhs.uk/systemsandservices/nsts/docs/tech_nn_check_digit.pdf): 1. multiply each of the first nine digits by a weighting factor

File Locking problem
Hi, I have an SMB server running RH6.2 with SMB 2.0.7. All the clients are WIN95, and require access to a database on the SAMBA server. The problem is that the database locks the file while the user is modifying it, and then unlocks it when the user returns to the programs menu. If the user then selects another action that uses the same file the program reports that the file is locked. Another

model simplification using Crawley as a guide
Hello, I have consciously avoided using step() for model simplification in favour of manually updating the model by removing non-significant terms one at a time. I'm using The R Book by M.J. Crawley as a guide. It comes as no surprise that my analysis does proceed as smoothly as does Crawley's and being a beginner, I'm struggling with what to do next. I have a model: lm(y~A * B *
