File permissions problem
Hi All,
I was hoping someone can help me with a small problem. I have a 5 user
Samba network running on Red Hat 6. One user is set up to have root
equivalence but he only has read-only access to files created by other users
(its also fair to say that the other users only have read-only access to
each others files). I have tried messing around with the Linux permissions
on the files concerned (in

Hello all,
I'm relatively new to linux, and an absolute neophyte to Samba. I have

networked to a pc running Windows98. (this is where my development
environement resides) I can transfers any files from my Linux box
(share=ptpl) to my Windows pc, however when I try to to transfer files

Using rsync to just -resync permissions and ownership?
G'day,
I'm in the process of fixing a long broken rsync backup on a couple of
servers. The old system rsync'd a Linux (CentOS 5) server onto a
Opensolaris/OpenIndiana server but didn't worry about ownership or
permissions, across an expensive WAN link. All the ownerships and
permissions are different to the original box on the OI box.
I now have a virtual CentOS 5 box that I

preserving unix->win file permissions for backup via samba?
I am having difficulty in try to preserve permissions on Unix files that
are copied from the samba server onto a Windows98 system, and then copied
again via samba back to an 'upload' directory on the samba server.
Specifically, I am sharing "/etc" (samba read only) for backup purposes,
and while logged in as "root" on the windows system, I can drag and drop
these files

File permissions issue: different behavior between samba and unix
I'm seeing behavior that I was hoping somebody could explain. I have a
share set up that will be a repository for company-wide data. There are
three classes of people who can access it, readers, read/writers, and
admins. Readers and read/writers are self explanatory, admins have
read/write access, and can change the permissions/ownership of files.
Read and write access is controlled by

bug in permissions on symlinks
The only circumstance where i could see symlink ownership being an issue
would be in the case where one might need to be changed, on those systems
which support that. Most i've seen delete and recreate the link, so if
the person needing to own the link has write, with no sticky bit, on the
containing directory,, he's good to go. Can anyone see another issue?
Certainly, the whole

permissions bug w/ --backup-dir or --backup option?
Running rsync 2.4.7pre1, using the --backup-dir option, I just realized
today that file ownerships and permissions of backed up files are not
preserved. In other words, if rsync moves an obsolete file to the backup
dir, it's ownership seems to revert to root:root, and permissions change, as
well. We are also using the -a (archive) option, by the way, which should
mean "preserve

Problem with file ownership/permissions on WinXP client
Sorry if this is a faq, known issue, or otherwise easy to solve problem
- have searched lists, docs, web etc, and don't find answer.
I have a Samba server (3.0.14) running on a remote (Debian)
fileserver. Most workstations are OSX or Solaris and the shares on the
fileserver are NFS mounted on those machines. I now need to mount the
fileserver on a Windows XP laptop.

Bad password problem
Dear David,
I have the same bad password problem with my windows98 workstation.
I have spent quiet a bit of time analysing this problem but still could not find any resolution.
Did you manage to find any better solution for this problem?

My apologies if this is a FAQ: point me in the right direction!
When editing a WORD document (or Excel, and probably others), the revised
file written back to the UNIX home directory loses its original ownership,
group-ownership and permissions (modes) and gets a default set (me, my

Fw: Session logging in Windows98?
Does anyone have a function such as tee() described below?
It would be nice not to have to go to Emacs and have to deal with yet
another editor.

Cannot view the list of user
Dear Samba Users;
I'm running samba-2.2.7a on RedHat 9. Now, I'm trying to configure
Samba as PDC. I have followed the instructions from :
http://sg.samba.org/samba/docs/using_samba/ch04.html
But, the problem is when I want to view the list of user (Figure
4.5), I got error message like this : "Cannot view the list of user
