LPR or LPRng or CUPS
I'm converting my NT 4.0 Print Servers to Samba Print Servers. Which printing system should I be using? LPR, LPRng or CUPS. I would love to have some feedback on the advantages and disadvantages or what the Samba Team recommends as a standard for working wih Samba. In case you need it, my system is SuSE 7 kernel 2.2.16 running under VM on s/390. Thanks, Josh Konkol, CNE MCSE Senior

LPRng and SAMBA
First of all, thanks to everyone who has helped me out so far resolving my samba problems! The latest has to do with LPRng and directory permissions. LPRng requires 0600 permissions on the spool directory, owner daemon group daemon. Whenever a user tries to print through SAMBA, they do not have write access to the spool directory, as teh job comes in user/group of the person who printed. Any

SAMBA 2.2.3a <-> LPRng 3.8.x
hi you all, I had this problem for a long time and with different versions of SAMBA and LPRng: using '/usr/spool/lp/bin/lpr -r -Fl -m%m -J"%J" -U%U -P%p %s' as 'print command' results in two jobs in the queue window on the NT box, though there is only one job in the unix queue. using '/usr/spool/lp/bin/lpr -r -Fl -m%m -U%U -P%p %s' works fine, but delete

LPRng: LPRng and Samba (fwd)
I'm looking for a little help with Samba and LPRng, however, the LPRng portion of it isn't really all that important -- I believe this is mainly a Samba issue. The problem here is that we have 4 campus servers. Each one hosts a Samba domain. Sometimes, users for whatever reason will go to a different campus (where they may or may not have an account -- the problem occurs when they do

CUPS vs lprng
Could I get some opinions on which type of Samba based printing is easier, CUPS or LPRNG, or just bybass Samba altogether. I'm looking at the Printing HOWTO by Kurt Pfeifle (Printing Support in Samba 3.0) and both look really complex. Anyone out there have any experience with printing services in Samba? Should I just stay away from samba printing and go direct to Network printers? What

printing = lprng working?
Hi I updated samba today to 3.0.5. Printing stopped working. The log says: [2004/08/02 14:28:57, 0] printing/print_cups.c:cups_printer_fn(108) Unable to connect to CUPS server localhost - Verbindungsaufbau abgelehnt I'm using lprng not cups. Is samba ignoring printing = lprng? I tested lpr it still works as usual. Is there anything else I should check? Thanks. Best, Hans

Samba & LPRng: Printer Status in Windows
I know this question has been answered here a while back, but I have not been able to find the mailing with the posts on it. -----==========----- I have a redhat server that I am using as a file/print server for student use. I am using samba to help the users with Windows. The problem I have is that when using printing a user can submit a print job, and it prints fine, but cannot see the

smbd & LPRng
Hello all - I've got an unusual problem that keeps popping up since samba 2.0, all the way through 2.0.5a. I'm running LPRng on my Linux box with Samba. Both startup fine. Fileserving with samba is fine, but whenever I try to print from any of my clients (Win 9x, NT, doesn't matter) the print job just sits in the SAMBA spool directory. Looking through the LPD logs LPR never gets

Printer errors
Hello all, Got SAMBA running on a linux 2.0.32 box, and all is well. Looked over the docs and set up my printer with the (what I think) are correct entries. Basically, what the default smb.conf has. Testparms says it o.k.! And I can print (lpr) locally. Windows sees both printcap entries (inkjet and psjet), but any attempt to pring to them errors out. I then added the print command =

Problems building LPRng src RPM
Hi All I know this is not a LPRng list but I'm trying to build the latest SRPM from http://lprng.sourceforge.net/DISTRIB/LPRng/LPRng-3.8.27-1.src.rpm so that I may use it on my CentOS 5 box, but it fails with the following errors <snip> + make MAKEPACKAGE=YES if [ "UTILS" = po ] ; then \ for i in po/Makefile* ; do \ if [ -f "$i" ] ;

printing issues - lprng
Hi, I am running samba and lprng for 4 hp laserjets. Sometimes a samba print job goes to the wrong printer. Normally everything works just fine. Shown below is the lprng acct log file enries for the concerned print job. Please notice that the print job was supposed to go to hp4050-mail, but ended up in hp8100. Any suggestions are much appreciated. Thanks Balagopal jobstart

Samba printing with LPRng?
Has anybody ever used Samba with LPRng? I would like to write a wrapper for "lpq -l" which Samba will use to pass information back to Windows 95 and Windows NT clients. The information is all there, but it's obviously different from the standard BSD lpq. Any pointers would be appreciated. Thanks, Mike. ======================================================================

Printing through LPRng
At work I am attempting to set up Wine (20050725 with Sidenet) on an application server with Red Hat 8.0, and the programs we need are working well. However, the server has 28 printer queues for printers scattered around the network, and is running LPRng. I found documentation about creating printer ports that are tied to specific queues, but I haven't found any sensible means to make

Bidirectional printers, LPRng, and Samba...
Does anyone have any hints or suggestions on getting some JetDirect-based printers set up for bidirectional printing in Samba? We're using LPRng 3.8.0, ifhp 3.4.7, and samba 2.2.2 From the LPRng standpoint, the printers seem to be set up for bidirectional communication fine.. but how do we get Samba to allow bidirectional communication? Thanks in advance! Glenn --- Glenn E. Sieb,

Fwd: "Make_passthrough: pid XXXX, dup2(6, 0) failed" with LPRNG 3.8.C and Samba 4.3.8 on FreeBSD
(FreeBSD 10.3-RELEASE-p4 i386, Lprng 3.8.C and Samba 4.3.8 installed via pkg()) I have set up a PDF converter queue that converts PS input to PDF and puts it on its website. Recently I had samba join the AD domain here, and ever since my pdf converter fails. Upon much trial, error and debugging I found out that when I start the Lprng service BEFORE the Samba service, everything is working.

LPRng question
<It seems that the print command is trying to find the printer at location 'localhost'. Since this is a network printer it is not at localhost is it?> Yeah, the error messages made no sense to me either! Well, like I said earlier: < The IP address of this printer is 10.1.1.192. I call this printer nero, and have it listed in my /etc/hosts file> Here is a copy of part of my

LPRng
I have a redhat 9 server I would like to migrate (install Centos on a new machine, and move the necessary files) to Centos 5. On the RH9 machine, I use LPRng for printing. This was mainly choosen because it makes it easy to control access to the printers using /etc/lpd.perms, something I never figured out how to do in cups. All printer queues are raw printers, the printer driver in Windows takes

Printer queue problem (LPRng 3.4.2, Samba 1.9.18p4, Solaris 2.5.1/2.6)
I've been having a problem with Win95 clients watching a printer queue on the Samba server (called labserv2). labserv2 is a Solaris 2.5.1 machine running samba 1.9.18p4. The printing system is LPRng 3.4.2. A user can watch the printer queue from a Win95 client machine. However, when the printer queue gets backed up (usually about 12 jobs), the queue window locks. The corresponding smbd
