PopUp messages
Dear all,
as you already know, it is possible to send short winpopup messages to
Win boxes using the command smbclient -M host.
If a Win user wants to reply, it should be possible to use the Windows'
WinPopUp GUI to reply, but the message gets lost somewhere.
For example:
smbclient -M winbox
Added interface ip=192.1.1.125 bcast=192.1.1.255 nmask=255.255.255.0

Samba 2.2 and "nt acl support = no"
Hello-
We've been working on upgrading our servers from Samba 2.0.6 to Samba
2.2.1a and have run into a problem with a change in Samba's behavior
when NT ACL support is turned off. I was hoping someone on the list
could provide some insight about what is going on.
First, some background. On our main file servers, we've been running

prevent workgroups from appearing in browse list
Hi,
I have a samba 2.2.1a (cvs-06.08.2001) running as PDC for my domain, and it
is doing fine. But in the broadcast domain there are severeal other
workgroups (no domains) with their own Domain Master Browsers. Additionaly
there are always a lot of unconfigured computers not under my control,
which build their own workgroups (e.g. mdkhome, workgroup...).
My problem is now, how do I prevent all

I know in some ways the answer is RTFM, but I'm not even sure which docs to
read or where they are.
I've posted about my printing problem before (Win2k SP2 won't print to my
Linux server printer), and even though I've had some suggestions, nothing
has worked (after a solid week of trying combinations in smb.conf, I'm

Problem with printer driver sharing Win2k klients.
Hi...
I got this new server at work that I have to get 100% up and running by
tomorrow.
It's running Samba 2.2.1a on SuSE 7.3 Pro
It's supposed to be VPN - File and Printer Server
The printers are:
One OCE 700C / CS90 color copier and One OCE 3165
And there is only one problem left.
I can install the printer drivers for Win9x & NT on the samba server.
But I can't figure out how to

PATCH to Samba >= 2.2.1, accents and special chars
Okay, I've had some fun there. Let me tell I am no samba pro, so the patch
below _should be tested and tested again_ in _your_ environment before doing
anything close to putting your patched samba into production. It can possibly
break everything. You have been warned.
The mail is somehow longish, because sending a quick (and dirty) patch
without any explanation seems wrong to me. And

Win 2000 says Samba file as a revision 3 ACL (ACL_REVISION3)
Hey,
Would anyone be able to point me to info on ACL_REVISION3 specifications?
My lowly MSDN and SDK seem to only know about ACL_REVISION2. A file on Win
2000 share has revision 2, same file copied to samba share has revision 3.
Context: I am looking at the security descriptor for files under Windows
2000.
Thanks,

Is there a way to get information on a print job from the command line? For
example:

or something like that?

libnss-ldap vs winbind?
I set up winbind on one box successfully. Now a friend told me
that it might be better to use ActiveDirectoriy (the PDC and all
other servers are win2000). What is the difference in both
approaches? which is 'better'?
I feel that ldap is the more general and cleaner solution. Is
that true? My windows-admins will get rid of wins soon. does
winbind rely on wins? can libnss-ldap also create

Advanced user rights on a samba PDC
Hello,
Sorry for the crosspost on both lists.
I've just finished to install a Linux RedHat 2.4.2 / Samba 2.2.1a server,
which acts as a PDC server for about 30 windows 9X/NT/2000 clients.
It works ok, but 2 problems remain, which I suspect to be bounded :
1) I can't start the user manager for domains on a Win NT4 workstation SP5
box, i have the following error message (translated form

Strange smbpasswd entries
Hello,
After I added a user with smbpasswd -a user, I get a rather strange entrie
in smbpasswd:
user:1012:lmhast:nthash:[UX ]:LCT-00000000:
What does the X mean in "UX"?
Why is the time (last change time) not correct?
I'm running samba 2.2.2 on a RH 7.1 machine.
UPDATE: This problem does not seem to occur with samba 2.2.1a.
Any ideas?

samba NT ACL support problem?
Recently, a problem developed in storing IE5's Temporary Internet
Files on our samba exported network scratch space. In tracking it down, I
found that the Win2k client attempts to set the ACL of the file
"Content.IE5/index.dat". However, the this call ends up setting the mode
of index.dat to 0407 (-r-----rwx), thus making the file unmodifiable to
the user who created it. (This in
