I just loaded Samba 2.2.1a (previously running 2.0.7) and am having major problems. The load on my server keeps climbing (got as high as *95* this morning. Relevant info following: Manufacturer is Sun (Sun Microsystems) System Model is Enterprise 250 Model 2400 Main Memory is 2.0 GB Virtual Memory is 4.3 GB OS Version is 5.7 This machine is the file and print server for our campus desktop machines; the PCs use Samba; the Macs use Xinet. Xinet has remained stable. Samba 2.2.1a ------------ 10:48am up 1 day(s), 19:22, 58 users, load average: 6.83, 6.40, 5.86 (251 smbd processes running) 11:03am up 1 day(s), 19:37, 59 users, load average: 22.56, 30.63, 19.75 (323 smbd processes running) 3:07pm up 1 day(s), 23:41, 71 users, load average: 38.70, 20.83, 11.76 (647 smbd processes running) Samba 2.0.7: ----------- 4:28pm up 2 day(s), 1:02, 63 users, load average: 1.63, 1.75, 1.84 (398 smbd processes running) The number of smbd processes seems to go through the roof, and the load on the machine does the same. I know Solaris 7 has some memory leaks, but things on the machine will change from running normally to totally out of control within a 15-minute time frame. Any suggestions would be appreciated. If you need additional info from our config file or logs, please let me know. There's a lynch mob after me... Don't know but this has been raised on the list recently. Go to the list archives perhaps for Aug and Sept and look around. There have been several related bug fixes which would relate to this type of problem. Are you seeing an abnormal about of CPU usage for an smbd? If so, what shows up from strace of the process? cheers, jerry --------------------------------------------------------------------- www.samba.org SAMBA Team jerry_at_samba.org www.plainjoe.org jerry_at_plainjoe.org --"I never saved anything for the swim back." Dear Samba group, We are using samba 2.0.7 on Linux RedHat 7.0 (with kernel 2.2.x) "printers" service to capture all the printing files of window NT2000 and store these printing files in /var/spool/samba directionary. The samba server "printers" service works very well on samba 2.0.7. Last week, we updated Linux RedHat 7.0 to Linux RedHat 7.2, and the samba server on Linux RedHat 7.2 is 2.2.1a. The samba (2.2.1a) configuration file (/etc/samba/smb.conf) on Linux RedHat 7.2 is the same one on samba 2.0.7. However after samba server was updated to 2.2.1a, it can not capture any printing files from same window NT2000 machine. The window NT2000 machine can send the printing files from its local lpt1 port to samba "printers" services, but the samba 2.2.1a can not capture them any more. I wonder if you could give me some suggestions about it. Thank you very much and Merry Christmas!!! Following is the samba configuration file for you reference. If you need any information, please let me know. Hi, I'm hoping you could help me or at least direct me to someone who does know. We're in a situation where there are at least 30 Windows XP users. We run Samba 2.2.1a as our file server with Red Hat Linux 7.0 Just a couple of days ago, samba crashed for the first time in a while. One hour later it crashed again, then the next hour, then the next...this has been happening for the past 2 days. I've been keeping track of when it crashes and it's almost every hour. This even happens when no one is accessing the network. I am constantly monitoring it. The SMB services Fails when it crashes so i'm constantly having to reset Samba almost every hour. What could be the problem and what would you advise I try to diagnose this? It seems like everytime someone accesses the file server it crashes. Could it be Windows XP not being compatible with Samba? PLease advise. Chris Lum 250-728-3301 ext 216 Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre Bamfield, BC
