forcing codepage for non-unicode apps
Hello.
I've a problem running a few apps that are supposed to output some
text in Russian, but it's not displayed correctly (instead it looks
like text in the web browser when wrong charset is selected).
I think these applications try to use GDI or standart Windows
controls with non-unicode text in Windows-1251 Cyrillic codepage
and it doesn't work. AFAIK in Windows XP there was

German codepage and Samba3.0alpha20
Hi there, Greetings from Vienna :)
About 2 weeks ago I tried - waiting anxiously for
group mapping support which isn't available yet on
the 2.2.x versions and won't ever be - the 3.0a20
version. Everything fine, I could join the domain
as non-root member of the windows "domain admins"
group, could assign local power user privilege to
 domain users as expected (with

another iconv question
Hi All,
I am trying to help my friend set up his rsync with iconv. Presently
it works fine but re-copies every file with an umlaute in the
filename. I saw a recent post about this and the fix but...
he ran "locale" ( both source and dest are on same machine) and is
running on a German-Swiss locale

codepage-conversion for smbclient
Hi list,
I've browsed through the archives, but I didn't find a answer for
this:
I use smbclient to access a windowsNT 4.0 server.
I get only '?' for filenames which contains Umlauts.
F.e., a file called "Verkn?pfung" is displayed as "Verkn?pfung".
I use following mount-string:
mount.smbfs //SERVER/Share /home/xxx -o rw noexec nosuid nodev user

Problem with German Umlauts
Hi @all...
Following configuration i used before samba 3:
	character set = ISO8859-1
	codepage = CP850
I could read an write files with umlauts from my Win2k Client. Doing an
ls at the linux console showed a ? (question mark) instead the umlaut,
but using mc (Midnight Commander) shows the right char. I was quite
happy with this setup.
Now, with samba 3.0.0final-1 (from Debian/sarge), I tried

Character encoding problem in file names
Hi,
I'm having some problems with reading files with special characters from
samba shares. The characters are for example '?' and '?' (and mainly all
umlaut chracters). Before I have been using Fedora Core with ISO8859-1 as
local character encoding and everything was OK when I mounted the samba
share using options "iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850" with smbmount

Problems with Win-Username containing a "Umlaut"
Hi!
I'm having a small network with 10 WinXP Pro computers and a SuSE 7.3 Linux Server.
I configured Samba to map the Windows Usernames of 9 computers correctly, but the one, with which Marc D?rner is working, is not mapped correctly. I found out, that this is caused by the "?" (german Umlaut). If the Username is "Marc Doerner" it'll work, but i'd like to keep it to

Codepage conversion between 2.2.8 and 3.0.14 - what's 2.2.8 default charset on disk?
I have to upgrade a 2.2.8a (Debian) installation to 3.0.14a (Debian
too). I have quite everything clear but I am afraid I will get into
trouble with the filename encoding on disk.
The current samba installation has no explicit codepage declared for the
file system, and running "testparm" gives only these settings (which are
  default) for codepages and charsets:

Newbe Question: Character Encoding
I have to present german umlaute as "?" on my webpage. When writing the
text within the view, everything is fine - the characters are presented
correctly. When I declare variable within the controller (e.g. via flash
or as a list of values for a listbox) the text is displayed with the
umlaute replaced by strange characters.
I assume I have to adjust the character encoding somewhere.

german umlaute win95 client vs. Linux-Samba file server
Hello,
I've a problem known especially to german speaking users (and other
nationalities using special characters).
I'm using Samba 1.9.18 and a linux 2.0.35 kernel
I want to create a directory or file with a name containing german umlaute
from the win95 client
so that I can see it on the linux machine with the equal characters I've
used under win95.
On the win95 machine the new

Sweave output encoding in R-2.10.0beta on Windows (Rgui <-> Rterm)
Dear developers,
I have come across a (somewhat strange) change in the encoding of Sweave
output from R-2.9.2pat to R-2.10.0beta (apparently specific to Rgui) on
Windows installations. Of course, the NEWS file contains quite a few
changes concerning encoding, but I was not able to locate an entry which
explains the observed behaviour. I am not very familiar with
encodings/locales/codepages,

Trouble with charsets on samba4
Hello
I have much trouble with german umlauts.
I've installed samba4 as a DC in an existing Windows Domain. The first join I made with a blank smb4.conf
"samba-tool domain join DOMAIN DC -UAdministrator%Passwort --realm=DOMAIN.LOCAL --server=windows-dc.domain.local --use-ntvfs"
It works fine and everything is synced.
On the share we have directories and files with german umlauts.

That's what I found, too. We did not do an update it's a fresh
installation (migrate from samb3 with classicupgrade).
I now did a "samba-tool dbcheck -v " and I see that the "ΓΌ" in the DN of

Sourcing files with Umlaut in path no longer works
Dear helpeRs,
on my new machine - Windows 7 64Bit, R 2.15-2, I can no longer source
files for which the path contains the o-Umlaut (?). As a historical
burden, my username is Gr?mping and contains that Umlaut (I wouldn't
have chosen it now, but decided to keep it for easy transfer). I have
had the difficulty that I couldn't use the R CMD tools on files with
Umlauts in the path (and
