best parameters for fixed-size files on a RAID5 partition ?
Hi there, Sorry for the dup, here are more informations. I'll soon run RedHat4 U4 ES with multiple 4TB partitions made of a 7-disks RAID5 array. Almost all files on these partitions will have a fixed size of 32MB. Should I leave the default raid chunk size to 64k with ext3's 4k blocks ? What are the best tweaks around to optimize overall performance ? Thanks, Ionel -- Ionel GARDAIS

dealing with mke2fs -T option
Hi, I have a doubt if I use the mke2fs option the right way. I formatted two different disks, one with $ mke2fs -b 4096 -E stride=16 -m 1 -T news /dev/sdd and the other with $ mke2fs -b 4096 -E stride=16 -m 1 -T largefile4 /dev/sde sdd is supposed to get files between 8k and 16k. sde will handle files with a fixed size of 32Mb. Then I tried this : $ dd if=/dev/zero of=/mount-sdx/file bs=4k

owner of a smbd thread
Hi, I've set up a Samba server accessed by NTWS 4. When I do a "ps aux" on the server, i can see a line for each user connected with a "smbd -D" command. The owners of these commands are mostly root but sometimes the users themselves. How to force the owner of the command in order to be available to get a list of connected users with an "ps aux" and an

mounting NFS or SMBFS ?
Hi, I've users connecting to a samba server via WinNTWS 4.0 (home directories are /home/%u) While workstations have both Windows and Linux installed, I want to allow users to connect to their /home directory when logging into Linux. Do you think it's better to automount the folders using an NFS mount or to use an SMBFS mount ? What are advantages and drawbacks of each methods ?

a good way of life
Thank you all for your answers. One told me that in order to allow the students to upload/download from their home directories, FTP or something like that is a simple and easy choice. As domain logon and roaming profil is not needed and FTP can be logged, I'll use this. Another question for our brillants candidates : How to batch the creation of a Samba account ? I mean, everytime you

File manager or browser for IMAP?
Thunderbird is an absolute pig, taking hours to load my Dovecot IMAP. Claws-mail is good, but I have some problems with it. Alpine appears not to be ready for prime time to act as a window into IMAP. Same with the rest I've tried. SteveT On Tue, 24 Sep 2019 00:21:33 +0200 Ionel Spanachi <ionel.spanachi at hfg-karlsruhe.de> wrote: > Why not use thunderbird (or any other IMAP talking

AUTH_FAIL_MAX reached too early
This looks like a bug (ssh -v output from user included below). AUTH_FAIL_MAX is reached before all supported authentication methods are tried. One possible solution is to count authentication failures separately for each method tried, and disconnect if one fails more than <configurable> times. Btw: The exit status bug is fixed in the CVS version of OpenSSH, but I'm not very

Determine the dimension-names of an element in an array in R
Hi: How can I extract the dimension-names of a pre-defined element in a multidimensional array in R ? A toy example is provided below: I have a 4-dimensional array with each dimension having certain length. In the below example, "mydatastructure" explains the structure of my data. mydatastructure = array(0, dim=c(length(b),length(z),length(x),length(d)), dimnames=list(b,z,x,d)) where,

3.3 -> 3.4 transition
maybe some of the 3.4 beta discussion has covered this, i wasn't watching it too closely. what is going to be the process to convert a system from 3.3 to 3.4? will a simple yum update work? or do we have to do something more intentional to make it happen? how does redhat handle u3->u4 updates? i assume that since u4 has been published that security patches from rh will only apply to

fixed trimmed mean for j-group
Hello...i want to find the empirical rate for type 1 error using fixed trimmed mean. To make it easy, i'm referring to journal given by this website http://www.academicjournals.org/ajmcsr/PDF/pdf2011/Yusof%20et%20al.pdf. I already run the programme and there is no error in it but i got zero for the empirical rate of type 1 error. The empirical rate for the type 1 error given in the journal

Re: [brandz-discuss] Re: BrandZ, Xen and Chime for Solaris 10 U3 ?
Xen will not be in update 4. We are pushing towards integrating into Nevada sometime this summer. We''re actively working on getting another release out to OpenSolaris. I have my latest attempt at building an ISO image spinning in another window right now. This new release will be based on Nevada build 66. It''s been a ridiculously long time since our last release, and I

U4 beta rpms for CentOS
I have built a set of preview U4 beta rpms for CentOS i386 - these will become the basis of CentOS 3.4 when Rhel 3 U4 is released. I will not be pushing these out to the mirrors, but they are available at http://beta.caosity.org/centos/3.3/U4beta The beta packages are not signed. To add then to yum.conf add :- [u4beta] name=CentOS-$releasever - U4beta
