Changing Windows passwords
Hi all,
Is there a way to use the "encrypt passwords" and the "passwd chat" programs
simultaneously? smb.conf(5) doesn't mention anything about them being
mutually exclusive, yet when I run testparm on the smb.conf file, I get:
ERROR: the 'passwd chat' script [...] expects to use the old
plaintext password via the %o substitution. With encrypted

and numerous Windows NT 4.0 Workstations)
I can see my Linux box in Network Neighborhood on my Windows NT boxes. I
can open the Linux box and see the top level shares available. When I
try to open a share I see one or two anonymous folders.

Client frequent disconnection + strange logs
Hello,
Although I've been using samba for years at my customers
office, I recently moved one on a HP E60 server running
RedHat 6.2.
The samba version is 2.0.6, untouched from the distribution.
They use a (weird) accounting software built on the top of
FoxPro, requiring a *huge* amount of open files. I accordingly
raised the values for files-nr and inode-nr and the stats seem
ok.
They have

Help! problems with Arcserve. Can someone decrypt the logs ?
Hi everyone,
We use samba 2.0.4 and are very glad of it. However, recently I had to add a
backup facility on our network, so we plan to purchase Arcserve IT for NT,
in order to backup our servers. We are using mainly 3 Linux servers and 1 NT
server, which runs the backup service.
However, as Itried to add a simple share on the file server to enable
backup, later I encounter problems with

" ERROR! Out of file structures" with smbd, and Arcserve IT on sm b share
Hi again,
I was previously writing for a problem with Arcserve IT and Samba (with
linux). The connection drops after 15 minutes.
Continuing to understand what's happening, I discovered the following
message in the logs:
[1999/06/01 14:42:08, 0] smbd/files.c:file_new(85)
ERROR! Out of file structures
Immediatly I ran into the samba code to try to understand the cause of the
problem.

2.0.4, still oplock_break failures
Hi!
Even with 2.0.4, I'm still seeing a lot of oplock break failures
(clients failing, see log further down). The client hangs for approx 30
secs (sometimes more) and then gets back online. At least one user can't
use the file shares at all; it hangs whatever he does, and on any
computer he uses (NT or 98, laptop, desktop...) Other users have less
problems, but maybe they are less

explorer freezes on right-clicking .exe's
I'm using samba 2.1 pre-alpha. When I right click an .exe file on the
most shares, explorer freezes, and must be killed to recover. The
problem doesn't show up on the home shares, but appears on any other
shares I create. I've experienced this problem on many different
workstations. Looking at the logs, it seems to be a problem with
oplocks; the part of the log that seems to apply is

Windows VBSscript and test.sh execution in /tmp/public in AIX 5.3
Hello,
I am having a very speific problem with my samba
interface. We just migrated to a new IBM pSeries
server with AIX 5.3. The older server was a RS6000,
with AIX 5.2 and everything I'm about to describe
below worked without fail.
We have a Windows 2000 Server that runs IIS. There is
a web-based program (programmed in VB Script) that
calls test.sh AIX script (through samba) on our AIX

I have a problem after changing NT sp3 to sp4 and Samba from 1.x to

Samba Fans:
I currently have a number of samba servers running Samba-1.9.18 on Solaris
2.6.
But each and every share requires the user to log in with not just the
password
but the correct username as well. Here is the interesting part. I left the
security parameter as default, security=share.

Server problem - Temporary directory set wrong?
Hi there,
I am experiencing some odd behaviour with my samba server (version 2.0.7
running on mandrake 8.0). The server comes up ok and appears on the browse
list, but you cannot list the shares on it. The following error shows up
when I use smbclient -L:

authentication failure
Hi,
I've just installed Samba 2.0.3 and now I'm getting following error:
PAM_pwdb[306]: 1 authentication failure; (uid=0) -> andreas for samba service
I can connect to all shares and printers, but get the error.
I suppose it has something to do with the passwords (I'm trying to sync Samba
and Linux passwords).
Any ideas?

Trouble Creating Folders

I am running 2.2.7a as a domain controller on RH 8.0
When I attempt to create a folder I get the following

If I continue everything goes file (the folder is
created and I can access it). I find a file in there

connection from a Windows station problem
Hi everybody,
I'm having issues with samba. When I try to see my shares from a
Windows 2000 station, I get the following error message:
I've checked the log file, I could see that these errors always have
to do with the /root/tmp folder, whose permissions I think it is

setting passwords from Windows
I'd like to change Samba passwords from win95 and NT4 clients.
I use security=user.
I don't give shell access to every user, so they can't use smbpasswd.
I've tested from a win95 client with the precompiled samba-2.0.4b.i386.rpm:
net pass \\greg greg test1 test2
I'd used smbpasswd to change greg's password to test1 on host greg prior to this. Here's the
