NT PDC forgets it's the domain master browser! Why???
I've seen this happen several times, and, short of rebooting
the NT PDC, I can't seem to fix it.
Background: We have two numbered networks in the building.
We have an NT domain that has members on both numbered networks.
To keep browse lists straight, I've designated Samba as the
browse master on one of the networks. It's declared to be
in the same workgroup as the NT primary

WINS querying (Advanced)
Hi all...
I need to make a few queries to WINS, but am unsure how to do so.
'nmblookup' will allow me to enter an IP address and get information about
the machine name, domain, and username. I want to do the opposite...I would
like to have a tool that will take a username and return the IP address.
I know this information is stored in WINS somehow, and I am capable of
writing some Perl

nmb log file entry
Hi,
I am getting this log entry in the nmb.log file.
Any ideas why I am getting it?

subnet 9.36.

Thanks

Connecting to samba-1.9.17p4 as non-administrator
I have a Win95 machine that I am trying to connect to a Samba share. When I
log in as administrator, I can connect to any and all samba shares just
fine. When I log onto the PC as a normal user, it asks for a password and
rejects them all. The logs say "server xyz rejected password" for each of
these attempts. This server has SP3 and I *do* have the encryption stuff
compiled in. I

Really Wacky Problem!
Hello,
I'm getting a really wacky problem with samba running on solaris 2.7
./smbclient -L zeus -N -- gives:
session request to ZEUS failed (Called name not present)
session request to *SMBSERVER failed (Called name not present)
The NT side give "\\Zeus is not accesible." "network name was not found"
messages
The same smb.conf file works on a solaris 2.5 and 2.6

resolve_name(644) messages in log.smb file
I am an newby to samba, and I have a user who is getting permission denied
when he attempts to copy files from his PC to his UNIX account. Everything
appears to be working correctly on the samba server. I believe he is the
only one having a problem. I found this message in the log.smb file after
his copy attempt:
libsmb/namequery.c:resolve_name(644)
resolve_name: unknown name switch type

WINS problem
Greetings Earthlings:
I finally convinced the LAN guy to remove NetBlooie from our
windoze clients. I also made the samba box the local and master
browser (we have no NT boxes at the moment). Local browsing seems
to have gotten faster (at least Mr. Robinson's Network Neighborhood
resolves faster). However, our LAN is isolated (windoze clients
dial out to get to the internet, retrieve

Slowdown when copying large files (PR#8617)

The Windows98 explorer (and possibly other programs) incorrectly set the
"sync" bit in write requests to network shares. This causes an enormous
slowdown as Samba (quite correctly) does a fsync() on the file after each
write.

2.0.7: unsolicited oplock break reply
I've used
oplocks = no
for a long time now, because of the famous "oplock_break" error, but I
decided to give 2.0.7 a try.
I still get "oplock break" errors as before, but this time I got a new
error too:

where to get timesync.pif ?
The Samba FAQ mentions a program called timesync to update the
system clock on clients from the server. The download address in the
FAQ is out of date - where can I get a copy ?

IPFW and SAMBA
What rule would I add to my firewall script in order to keep external
requests for 137,138, and 139, but allow the samba server on the same
machine, to allow requests from the internal network?
I am using FreeBSD 4.4-RELEASE with ipfw and natd.

Time Server?
List,
I've got my Samba box (RedHat 7.2) running NTP client to sync with
PARC. I want my windaz clients to be able to read time from it
automagically. Is there a way to do that? Seems like WinXX clients cannot
use NTP so can how can I sync them with my Samba box (which is accurate to
within 200 ms!)
TIA

A strange error
I am running samba2.2.3a6 on my RedHat7.3 computer. Whenever I try to access it
from my Windows 2000 computer, it says "Network path not found" and the log.smb
reports:

Have any ideas on how to fix this?

A question about [homes]
Hello everyone.
I have a question concerning the [homes] directive.
I've set it up and everything's working fine but there's just a slight
little detail that bothers me, and that is that when I browse my samba
server off a w2k/wXP client I have two shares (I only have [homes] in
my config file as far as shares are concerned) in the root view. That is
\\sambaserver\homes and
