Paradox on a Samba share
I've been trying to get a program that uses Paradox databases over Samba
shares set up for a company here and I'm smashing my head into a wall.
This is a custom application written with Delphi/BDE accessing Paradox
tables on a network share. Previously they used Netware and all was
glorious until the box died, since they're version of Netware was
bootlegged ages ago I decided to

problems logging in from 1.2.2 client to 1.2.1pre24 server
Hi!
On my personal workstation, I have installed openssh 1.2.2. I have two
server machines, one (A) running a self-compiled openssh 1.2.1pre24,
and a different one (B) running an openssh1.2.1pre24 compiled by
someone else.
While I can perfectly log in to A, logging in to B fails:
|mh at leona[32/532]:~$ ssh haber at b
|ssh_exchange_identification: read: Success
|mh at leona[33/533]:~$

oplocks problem with 2.2.3a
hello,
until last week I had 2.2.1a in place, which, except some fox (dos)
share which needed 'veto oplocks files', worked ok; upgraded to 2.2.3a
with the same smb.conf (details below) and suddenly I started having
oplocks problems (not on the dos share, that one is ok) with almost
every other share (those hold windows files: programs, *doc, *xls):

Anomaly in sample() function
Hi all
Maybe someone knows a way to solve this anomaly in sample():
I like to compute a sample (n=100) with replications from a population of
2500 units but if I draw repeated samples from it I dont get what seems to
be a representative sample if I look at other partitions of the population.
Enclosed is the population g99 with 4 columns: (units, partition 1 (site),
partition 2 (type), weights);

Creating new folder in a WIN95 explorer czech version.
I can't create new folder in a czech Win95 explorer on a unix using samba 1.9.18p7. The problem is that Windows exporer uses for the creation new folder a name containing characters above 128.
The explorer creates new folder in a two phases: the first It creates directory named Nov<A0> slo<A7>zka and next it gives to user
posibility to change this name. Crazy !!? The first phase

Running MCMCpack
Hi there,
I am running MCMCpack (MCMCirt1d model) on some files (26 items x about 800
– 1200 individuals).
I have a problem. When I am working on “big” files, the R program crashes.
More precisely I got the following Microsoft Warning:

Samba vs. Paradox
Hello list,
i have problems using paradox tables (Paradox Level 5) via BDE
(4.01 and 3.02) on my linux server, but their performance is very
slow. At current, i'm using Samba 1.9.17p2 (and yes, i know this is
not the current version, upgrad is planned). The configuration is
very passive (locking for multiuser access to tables, direct write to
disk). Does anybody have a suggestion on how

How to run a Paradox Game (Victoria/HoI2: Doomsday)
Does anyone know how to do this, I've copied both DD/Arma and Ricky to a directory in my home folder, and try to run it with a command:
wine '/home/myaccount/.wine_c/program files/paradox/doomsday/doomsday.exe'
But i just get errors saying things like "Can't find country.csv" etc.
I had installed both games on my windows machine, and simply copied the install

Novell NetWare 3.2 + Paradox => slow Samba
Hi Jim,
Does the Novell NetWare 3.2 server that you are trying to replace with Samba
have any NLM's loaded to implement B-Tree lookups?
If so, B-Tree processing is done on the Novell server without
generating a lot of network I/O.
In order to get the same kind of client - server performance,
you would have to run some Paradox compatible server software on the Samba
box.
Thanks,
Gary

Paradox 9 runtime
I'm interested in moving a client-server application written partially in
Paradox 9 onto an all linux platform. The server is Interbase, so that was
an easy transition thanks to IBPhoenix.
However, the client requires the Paradox 9 runtime which isn't available on
Linux. Wine seems like a possibility, but I can't find any evidence of
anyone trying it, successful or not. Has anyone out

Paradox 16 bit crashes with page fault
Hi!
I was able to install my good old Paradox 5, a 16-bit application. But when I start it, it crashes after some (correct) Dialogboxes with that trace:

wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 0xffffffff at address 0x11f7:0x00000f02 (thread 0018), starting debugger...

Paradox
Anyone on the list using a Paradox database on a Samba server?
I'm after any performance tweaks which might speed up
accessing data in a particular application (Q-Pulse, just in case
anyone's heard of it).
Any smb.conf tweaks in general which have made a proven speed
improvement would be welcomed.
TIA
Jon.

MANOVA power, degrees of freedom, and RAO's paradox
Hi,
I have a nested unbalanced data set of four correlated variables. When I
do univariate analyses, my factor of interest is significant or
marginally significant with all of the variables. Small effect size but
always in the same direction. If I do a MANOVA instead (because the
variables are not independent!) then my factor is far from being
significant. How does that come about?
I have

as.numeric : what goes wrong?
I have a character vector j1 created from dimnames and want it to convert it
to numeric.
Like the first element:
> j1[1]
f896
1 896
> as.numeric(j1[1])
[1] 1990
why is it not 896 as it should be?
This is true fr the whole vector.
Thanks
W.P.
