Samba 1.9.18 DOS to UNIX and back with ASCII
I have found that Samba does not seem to handle the ^M EOL character very well. This seems to be a big problem with Windows Notepad and then in vi for UNIX. Other than the ux2dos and dos2ux commands does anyone know of another solution or if this has been fixed in a more current release of Samba? Thanks! Newbie to Samba - getting '^M' characters from NT into PVCS o n UN IX
Hello Tony, Samba isn't the 'culprit', just the media used. Samba does NOT insert anything into the files that you copy over or have an application create on a samba share. The issue is that you are using a PC program to check out/modify the files, and pc os'es (Win/dos, i mean) use crlf as a ascii line terminator. Unix uses a lf only. So when you view the files with a pc

using the pfe editor with R 1.1.3 under windows 2000
I am in the process of setting up R1.3.1 on a new computer running windows 2000. I am having problems running the PFE text editor simultaneously within R for editing functions and outside R for editing ordinary text files. The PFE editor behaves as I expected, if it is opened in R AND but no other PFE window is open outside R. Similarly, it also works fine if I am editing a text file outside

Text/Binary Files. HELP!!!
I am sure someone must have come across this. Is it possible to force files to binary when copying to Unix directories. NT -> Unix. Text Files have got ^M in them. How do we prevent this happening. Would forcing to binary fix the problem & if so how would this be done? Thanks Ajmal Ajmal Rafique eCommerce +44(0)1384 445564 (Telephone) +44(0)1384 446838 (Fax)

RE: Gnuserv, NTEmacs, Windows 2000 and R
The following becomes more and more a topic for an R mailing list, possibly R-devel. R for Windows crashes are important and should be discussed and debugged with the experts -- which are not reading ESS-help AFAIK. Strange "no-echo" in place of "slave"
SVN revision replaces "slave" with "no-echo" in R devel. In each of the following, "no-echo" is rather strange to me. - src/gnuwin32/README.Rterm 3) As a no-echo process for ESS mode in NTEmacs with flag --ess. - src/library/grDevices/src/qdCocoa.m /* the no-echo thread work until this is NO */

list etiquette
Howdy folks: Please (I beg you, please!) don't follow the examples of a couple of recent posters. This is very bad form. If you want to get off the list, please don't send send a message to the list begging other readers to help (they can't). Only you can help stamp out forest fires (or get yourself off this list). At the top of every message from the list is a URL that can

rterm not shutting down from ESS on Win32
I've been having problems with Rterm.exe not shutting down when I exit an R (1.7.0 and 1.7.1) session from within emacs when using ESS. I've just upgraded to 5.1.24 and still have the same problems. I'm running ntemacs and winxp. I don't recall having these troubles with version 1.6.2 of R. Jeff. --- Jeff D. Hamann Hamann, Donald and Associates, Inc. PO Box 1421 Corvallis, Oregon

R-beta: [WIN95] Running R from the shell
Is it possible to run R soley from the shell? I'm evaluating necessary fixes to R and XLispStat (and eventually SAS and S-PLUS 4) for running as subprocesses to Emacs (NTEmacs) for ESS. Currently, I lose control of R when running via Emacs; is it possible to "remove" the windows? (all, or all but the graphics window)? best, -- -tony (Anthony Rossini) Statistics

Strange "no-echo" in place of "slave"
The first of Suharno's examples can be viewed that way, because R under ESS is not a "slave" in the technical sense, just a situation where you do not want keyboard input to be echoed. "Non-echoing" might have been better language though. The 2nd example really is of the master/slave variety, and to my knowledge nothing to do with echoing, so looks like a

is it a bug or a feature? re:time zone differences, laptops, and suggestion for a new option
I just did a win2k install, and as I thought i'd remembered, it asked whether the hardware clock was UTC or localtime (and recommends localtime). Of course, I chose UTC, but most would probably follow MegaSloth's recommendation. I don't know how to change it on an already-installed system, though. Does anyone else? Questions from a beginner.
I have used S-PLUS for years. Now I am learning to use R in Windows'98. I downloaded the latest version and installed it as instructed. However, I cannot find answers from online help to the following questions I encountered. If any of you has quick answers to these questions, please drop me a couple of lines. Thanks. 1. Why does R change my working directory during a session? I often used
