FWIW - share name length limit
I've just discovered a limitation in share name lengths. It may be in the
docs, but I didn't see it and it's not mentioned in the Frisch book on NT
admin.
I tried in my smb.conf to create a share called "public_ftp_files". The
share was created OK, but when I looked for it with the NT4 (sp4) Network
Neighborhood, the name had been truncated to "public_ftp_fi" (13

samba-announce?
Is there an announcements mailing list for samba? If not, could one
please be created?
I want to know when new releases are made, and when security holes are
found, maybe even infrequent benchmark results, but unfortunately I
don't have time to keep up with this list. My mailbox has been
overflowing on a weekly basis, and it's got to stop, so I really need to
decrease the volume coming

NLS question:Quadratic plus plateau fit
Dear R colleagues:
Am trying to fit a simple NL model to determine Economical Optimum Nitrogen
Rates.
The segmented (quadratic + plateau) model only works with some y's, in some
cases I get a "singular gradient" error.
I'll appreciate any ideas in how to solve the singular gradient error.
Thanks,
Jose

How to remove extra spaces introduced (?) by write.table
Dear Group,
My question relates to the write.table function.
I have created a data.frame containing both "character" and "numeric" columns.
When I use the write.table function to write this table into a text file
spaces are added into the "numeric" columns so that the number of digits in
each column is the same. This extra space is added before the actual number.

Resolution of plots?
Hello.
I have a problem regarding the output from the R plot window.
I have a quite dense dendrogram that I wish to visualize using a suitable
software (like Illustrator), and to accomplish that I right click on the
image from the plotting device and I save as metafile. The problem is when I
scale up the image, some of the vectors in the dendrogram image are
inseparable.
My question is if

NT Crashes when doing large network file Xfers (was Re: NT crashes during smbtar)
Ernie,
Thanks for the great info.. Based on what you were seeing, would
you suspect that part of the problem is with the combination of NT
and the 3com card (3c595)? Currently, we are ONLY seeing this
under NT Workstation (not server) and almost all of our machines
have this same 3com 3c595 card (only if using 100BaseT)..

1.9.18p10: Incompete directory listing from WfW 3.11
Hi,
we're having quite a strange problem with our Linux samba (1.9.18p10)
server:
when doing a directory list from a Windows for Workgroups 3.11 Client
all files an directories appear except <.> and <..>. While this is not a
serious problem when using ?dir?, some applications (e.g. Ami Pro 3.1)
seem to rely on these entries. In the file dialogues this particular
application does

2.0.2 servers with 1.9.18p10 DMB?
Have there been any problems reported with running 2.0.2 on servers using
security=server with a 1.9.18p10 DMB? We've run into a situation where
I've upgraded 4 of our servers to 2.0.2 but the DMB is still running
1.9.18p10. We have had sporatic trouble with the upgraded servers
rejecting correct passwords because the DMB seemingly would not properly
validate them. Today, we ran into a

Errors encountered with 1.9.18p10 Makefile
To whom it may concern:
here are the diffs which I required to make the mentioned Makefile work.
I maintain several platforms of samba servers, and thus use the VPATH
option in the Makefile. I've been fixing installscripts.sh as well,
so that `make install` works when run from my build directory.
I'm assuming SAMBA v2.x will migrate to autoconf/configure and should
fix these issues, but

Variable substitution bug in Samba 1.9.18p10 ?
While trying to debug the fact that printing works here
but the print queue isn't returned properly, I found the
following behaviour which might be a bug in Samba 1.9.18p10:
I have (among others) the following lines in smb.conf:
[printer1]
create mode = 0700
read only = yes
printable = yes
path = /var/spool/samba
printer name = %S

Download Samba 1.9.18p10
Hello,
for my SGI Indy with IRIX 5.3 I want to download the binary packages for
Samba 1.9.18p10. But I couldn't! I use different mirrorsites without success.
Only message "Waiting for reply ..." and nothing more. With the version for
IRIX 6.x is the same but with "samba53.18p8.tardist" there are no problems!
Any comments?

MS Word 97 and Samba 1.9.18p10
Hello all,
We're having some odd issues with samba and MS Word (And presumable the
rest of the office suite, but I haven't checked) running on NT 4.0 sp3.
MS Word doesn't seem to obey the umask settings:
create mask = 0775
directory mask = 0775
When a new word document is created, it is given -rwxrw-r-instead of the
-rwxrwxr-x I'm expecting. I'm not sure whats happening

Problems with MS Word 97 and Samba 1.9.18p10
Hello all,
I'm still having some odd problems with my samba setup.
An NT 4.0 SP3 workstation running MS Word 97 SR-1, and a Solaris 2.6 machine
running Samba 1.9.18p10 yields this problem:
Any user creates a new document. They save and close that document,
everything works fine. They re-open the document, and make some changes.
They then click the close "X" on the title

Hints for bad smbclient-2.0.3 put performance (Go back to 1.9.18p10!)
Hi,
I've been experiencing extremely poor smbclient put performance. I've written
about it a few times to the samba list, and to comp.protocols.smb, but no good
responses yet, except that I'm not the only one, and 1.9.18 may be better.
So I downloaded and compiled 1.9.18p10 for kicks, and found that the smbclient
there has excellent performance! Now I get 900KB/s puts instead of

Connecting to 1.9.18p10 from DOS boot diskette
I'm trying to connect to aSamba 1.9.18p10 share on my HP-UX 10.20 host, using an MS-DOS boot diskette (well, actually a Windows 95 boot diskette, but relying on the DOS-style protocol stack, etc.).
When I issue the same username and password that I use to connect to that share from my Windows NT client, I get an invalid password message.
Two things come to mind: is the DOS client sending my

Problem with Samba 1.9.18p10 on Solaris 2.5.1
Hi,
I have a problem accessing files on NT and 95 using Samba version
1.9.18p10. The files that I am accessing are in ClearCase (version
control software) on a Solaris Ultra 60 server. They are source files
and are compiled on NT on the command line through batch files. If I
fire more than one build (batch file) then once in a while I get a
fatal error from the Microsoft compiler - "Could

Win98 logon problems with samba 1.9.18p10
Hi there!
I have been using samba 1.9.15p* on Irix 6.5, and it did what I need it to
over win95 machines, but now I have a new win98 station, and when I try to
reach a home directory over smb server, I got the next response:
