Sometime cannot connect to samba server, Why ?
I have posted this question 3-4 weeks ago, but still get no response.
In my environment, I have one Linux box running Samba 1.8.18p5, and
there are about 20 Win95 clients which is in the same network.
The porblem I usually encountered is when I click on the samba server
icon in the NN icon, sometime I can get thru without any problem.
However, there are also many times that I got error message

/etc/lmhosts
Has anyone had any luck with lmhosts.
I'm trying to avoid using the -I 192.168.1.10 to identify a Win95 machine
when using smbmount
Is there an option I need to set in Samba to tell it to use /etc/lmhosts?

Client on dos
I need to use a samba server (linux redhat 6.0 ) from a diskless dos
machine ( has a floppy drive for booting) . So i need a very little
tcp-ip stack for dos and a client for a NT server on dos so that they
will be small enough to be on a 1.44 system floppy.
Is that possible ?

PC Backup Script?
I am trying to setup my Sun running samba 1.9.18p10 so that it can
backup my dept's PCs. I can get it to work manually using the
smbclient command with no problem. What I would like to do is have
a script that is able to take a list of PCs, determine if a PC is online,
backup that PC, then move on to the next one. If a PC is down,
it can report an error to the admin to state that the

Master Browser
I am using samba-1.9.18p10 in a Redhat 5.1 Linux box.
I have a short question, i.e.
Is it true that once the nmbd is running and becoming the Master Browser,
others win95 clients will not act as Master Browser anymore ?

Samba 1.9.18 DOS to UNIX and back with ASCII
I have found that Samba does not seem to handle the ^M EOL character
very well. This seems to be a big problem with Windows Notepad and then
in vi for UNIX. Other than the ux2dos and dos2ux commands does anyone
know of another solution or if this has been fixed in a more current
release of Samba?
Thanks!

Where is lmhosts?
Hello
Someone who has working lmhosts please tell me where it is (i.e., the path).
I RTFMd man lmhosts and:
1) man hosts tells: SYNOPSIS: /etc/hosts.
2) man lmhosts doesn't tell anything about the path.
3) man lmhosts: "It is very similar to the /etc/hosts file format" - does
it mean that the similarity is also in the placement of the file?
4) All config files are in

nmbd acting as a wins server gives negative query response for hosts and lmhosts addresses
Dear all,
I'm setting up a wins server configuration with Samba 3.0.24

Before setting dhcp to instruct the clients to use this wins server,
I'm trying to make certain it's working correctly.

nmbd as WINS & lmhosts
I have nmbd set up to act as a WINS server. As far as I can tell
from the docs, WINS should reply for queries that it can then lookup
in the supplied lmhosts file.
Unfortunately, it does not appear to do this; it only knows its
own name when queried (and the domain name entry) but none of
the entries that are in the lmhosts file.
the debug output of nmbd doesn't reveal much (and doesnt even

lmhosts issue with loopback address
Hi,
I'm trying to connect to a share on a linux box from a win98 (or win2k) machine through an SSH tunnel.
The documentation found on the subject says to setup an entry in LMHOSTS file in the form of:
127.0.0.1 sambaserver #pre
checking the status of the cache with NBTSTAT -c after doing a NBTSTAT -R does not show the entry for "sambaserver"

how to define share for sharing lmhosts?
Hi All,
Probably simple question: I want to make a share for sharing an lmhosts
file which gets included by the clients. This share has to be very
public and accept nullsessions (whatever that me be (no username and
password?)).
I want this because I need to generate aliases on the fly for for our
fileserver for some clients (terminalservers specifically). So I thought
that having an server

this may be a remedial question, but uh, what's /etc/lmhosts supposed to

What could be the problem?

smb setting for lmhosts client access
Folks,
I did a basic install of 2.0.5 yesterday and I was wondering type of
configuration I'd need to modify to enable users in another subnet
access to the test server. I tried modifying the lmhosts files on the
client computer, but with no success.

Net Logon service via LMHOSTS?
I'm trying to get hosts on other side of non-broadcasting router to login
to a samba server. I have successfully mapped a specified driver from
such a host to samba, but when trying to login to a domain am
unsuccessful. Found a document on SCO site ( SCO Advanced Server
Administrator's Handbook ) that says that services that can't be

download quota of 200MB per voucher
Dear Friends,
i have a question for you, i am sure someone can help. The pfsense captive
portal is up and running. Time countdown vouchers are working without
issue, such as 30m, 45m, 1h & so on.
However, I'd like to set up a download quota of 200MB per voucher. but
then you need to login with a username and password, instead of vouchers.
but I haven't found a way to generate
