Error while compliling
Hi, Please help me resolve this problem. While compiling samba-1.9.18p8, I got this message: cc: Internal compiler error: program cc1 got fatal signal 6 make: *** [smbpass.o] Error 1 I have re-edited the Makefile, and recompiled several times. Each time I got the same error message, at exactly this same spot. Is this a problem with my gcc compiler? which the message seems to imply. But I have

Net View: Must Log in error
Hi all, I have a user in a remote office with a 95 machine with WINS server set to my samba server here. I've tested the cross-subnet stuff -- everythings ok on that front. But whenever he tries to type in "net view" at a dos prompt, he gets the error: "Must me logged in to perform this action." Is there a network setting which I've missed? Thanks for any help,

samba and Citrix Metaframe
Hi, Is it possible to use samba with Citrix Metaframe to allow Unix users running Windows applications and having access to their unix directories? I'd like to know if there is no problem of authentication and permissions. Thanks in advance Benoit.

Win98/HP Printer problem. Partially Solved.
I set up a print/fax server here using RH Linux 6.0, and Samba 2.0.3. The printer is an old (but still very reliable) HP Laserjet 4. Printing from the Linux box using lpr works fine. However, whenever someone tries to print from a Windows98 box through SAMBA, there is an extra page printed on the end. This gets really annoying to the users, more so because the extra pages cannot be put back into

Printer redirection of old DOS Software
On our old Novell-2.2 server we had a program called CAPTURE to redirekt the printer output of DOS programs to the network printer. (Some old DOS programs only know LPT1:) Now i am locking for a CAPTURE replacement for our new Samba server. I tested PRINDIR Version 9.0 and LPTTOFL Version 1.0 out of a DOS-Box within WIN 3.11 and WIN 95. Both programs work fine with pure DOS but have timing

Samba, WINS, many subnets, etc
> The problem you'll have with this is that lmhosts like hosts needs to be distributed > to all machines. Is it possible to declare the samba server as the WINS server for all machines (which can be done via DHCP), and then prime the running samba with an lmhosts generated via the DNS database? What would happen if a machine with a given IP tried to register itself with a different

Weirdness
NT 4.0 workstation users are complaining that all of their drive letters are getting used up by what appears to be a rampant network-drive mapping situation. For example, normally I have three shares network-mapped. Lately, ceetain people are complaining that one of their shares get's remapped a number of times to take up all the drive letters (except drive letter Z). So suddenly they

mounting an arbitrary directory?
Hi all, Is it possible to specify an arbitrary unix directory to be mounted from samba? For example, to mount /usr/local/bin ? Using a different smb server, I've seen the ability to do this by doing something like Connect to: \\smbserver\/usr/local/bin Connect as: user Password: **** In other words, I'd like to be able to specify the exact path I'd like to mount without having

Network time sync and reverse NetBios name lookup
I made a somewhat deep check for time synchronization and I couldn't find what I was looking for. What I need to do is synchronize the clock on a Linux box to the clock on an NT server. I can't use NTP or any other protocol because the NT box doesn't understand it. Any pointers would be great. The second issue is that I need to do (if possible) a reverse NetBios name lookup by

Beware: Samba is a hoax
I can only conclude that Samba is an elaborate hoax and here's why. 1) Setup is more complex than Sendmail (it set the standard for complexity) 2) Even the simplest smb.conf causes trouble 3) You can pass ALL the tests in the DIAGNOSIS procedure, AND Samba will still not let you SHARE FILES or SHARE PRINTERS between Windows and Unix but you WILL be able to BROWSE YOUR SHARES (Just pretend

How to start smb server when reboot?
Hi, I installed Samba 2.0.3 on Linux 2.2.5. Every time I reboot system I found the smb has not been started. But in the directory /etc/rc.d, the file "smb" exists. When I run "smb restart",after a while, the samba server is ok. I wonder why the samba server is not up when system reboot. Thanks a lot. Followed is the content of the file "smb": #! /bin/sh ..

SWAT issue
I have had a RH5.2 server running Samba up for a long time. I upgraded to Mandrake 6.0. It broke Samba, so I reinstalled using the RPM on the CD. Samba works just fine, but SWAT will not! If I try to start it manually (/usr/sbin/swat) it just hangs. In /etc/services I have a line like this: swat 901/tcp In /etc/inetd.conf I have: swat stream tcp nowait.400 root

Samba Problems
I have a couple of problems with Samba that I would appreciate help with: 1. Since installing version 1.9.17p1, error messages such as "ERROR: set_share_mode: failed to ftruncate share mode file /var/smb/locks/share.9175085.1500224 to size 42 (Permission denied)" are appearing in log.smb. 2. When a directory on a UNIX machine contains a file named *, this file appears with the name ~16
