Again - backup WINS server?
Is there any way to set up a backup WINS specification in dhcp/Win NT/Samba? Having my WINS server go down the last few days made this a little more desirable, especially since when I noticed the service was dead, I wasn't able to reboot it for a few hours due to usage. pam_smb authentication
I am appending some documentation by my colleague Bill Eldridge that was actually written for our dial-up service, but should work for you purposes as well. A couple notes. 1.)The user must exist in /etc/passwd on the Samba machine or login to the Samba box will fail. 2.)In the example, we don't set up home directories for the users, we are using it for dial in and they usually want to

PDC/Net logon server
For some reason, my Linux machines took over the net yesterday, telling everyone they were PDC & BDC, even though I had an NT machine listed as PDC in both their smb.confs, had no participation in domain browsing, etc., etc. The only thing I had running was Net Logons (which I thought was needed to have a Samba dial-in allow domain logins, but after I turned it off, I realize I'm wrong.

Browsing via dial-in
I'm running Samba 18p7, with pppd & smb_pam to let me use NT passwords for my Unix dial-in accounts. Login goes fine, internet IP stuff works fine (like e-mail & Web), I can mount shares by name, but Windows Explorer browsing comes and goes. Even when it's working, browsing only starts up about 20 seconds or so after logon - before that I get "unable to browse network"

WARNING - 3Com PROBS - (re: Can't see my machine using "Network Neighbohood")
In using 3Com 905/905B's I find the drivers that come with Windows 95/NT don't find Linux or NBT machines properly, but upgrading to the newest drivers at 3Com's web site fixes the problem. No changes to any of the configuration settings. I don't know what other cards have this problem, but ALWAYS upgrade to the most bug-free version of a driver and software before giving up. --

How to install network apps?
I'm trying to figure out an intelligent way to install apps on the network server, and be able to install once and have all the clients use this. However, it seems like most installations modify the registry and seem to demand a client-by-client installation. Am I missing something on this? Can someone provide me some hints or references to help this? (And is anyone thinking about a SMS/ZEN

icecast and LAC2005
Hi, I gave a talk at last month's DCLUG[0] meeting on icecast and how we used it at LAC2005[1]. I was trying to stream the talk live while also trying to give the talk and host the meeting. I had the streaming working fine, but then hosed my laptop trying to get the video output to cooperate with the projector. I guess that should teach me to not try to stream and present using the same

Domain logon from behind proxy...
I think this has been addressed a few times, but without quite satisfactory results. I have a private subnet behind an NAT proxy server (IPMASQ), and a public subnet on the other side with the NT PDC on the public. (Using both NetBEUI & TCP/IP). The PDC will change later, but currently I'm trying to find out how this all works before I do that. I'm trying to make a client machine on

ATM with linux router
Does anyone here have experience with an ATM connection from their ISP running into a linux based router? We have a DS3 circuit for which we we thought we could use an SBE wanpci-1t3 card. The isp verified the card would work with their network, but apparantly didn''t cross check the particular circuit they were providing us. Is it possible to do the IP packet <-> ATM cell

Fwd: Re: Finney's fiducial confidence intervals of LD50
thanks a lot Renaud. but i was interested in Finney's fiducial confidence intervals of LD50 so to obtain comparable results with SPSS. But your reply leads me to the next question: does anybody know what is the best method (asymptotic, bootstrap etc.) for calculating confidence intervals of LD50? i could "get rid" of Finney's fiducial confidence intervals but

Logging on to the network - one samba, two subnets.
Hi. I have Samba set up to serve W95 PCs. Kids "log in to the network" using their Unix password. Students get their Unix home dir mounted as network drive X: when login is successful. This all happens on IP subnet 192.168.1.1/24 So far, so good. We are thinking about adding another IP subnet - say 192.168.2.1/24. Of course, the two subnets will be connected with a router. It

Can't smbmount with samba-2.0
Hello, I have a script on a production system at work that mounts an NT-exported share for NFS re-export to some NFS-only clients. The system was RedHat-4 and samba 1.9, and used the following style command line (names have been changed to protect the innocent :-) smbmount //host/share /mnt/point -c HOST -U user -P passwd \ -u nobody -g nobody -f 666 -d 777 Now the system has been upgraded to
