pam_smb authentication
I am appending some documentation by my colleague Bill Eldridge that was
actually written for our dial-up service, but should work for you
purposes as well. A couple notes.
1.)The user must exist in /etc/passwd on the Samba machine or login to
the Samba box will fail.
2.)In the example, we don't set up home directories for the users, we
are using it for dial in and they usually want to

Domain logon from behind proxy...
I think this has been addressed a few times,
but without quite satisfactory results.
I have a private subnet behind an NAT
proxy server (IPMASQ), and a public subnet
on the other side with the NT PDC on the public.
(Using both NetBEUI & TCP/IP). The PDC
will change later, but currently I'm trying to
find out how this all works before I do that.
I'm trying to make a client machine on

Samba conf. problem - NetBIOS problem?
Thanks to those who wrote and suggested I remove NetBEUI from my Win95 machines. Here's the next chapter in the story:
First, based on another suggestion, I tried "netstat -a" on the Win95 machine "secretary". It didn't show any kind of traffic on ports 137-139 (even though files WERE being shared at the time).
Next, I tried removing NetBEUI from

Again - backup WINS server?
Is there any way to set up a backup WINS
specification in dhcp/Win NT/Samba?
Having my WINS server go down the last
few days made this a little more desirable,
especially since when I noticed the service
was dead, I wasn't able to reboot it for a few
hours due to usage.
Thanks,
Bill

smbclient seems dead
Hi everyone,
First of all: I am not a member of this list, so any message you send
to the list(regarding this subject), please send them to me too.
When I do
smbclient //somemachine/someshare -U someusername
and then enter the correct password (Windows), then I get a smbclient
prompt. If then do ls, a directory listing is given. So far,
everything is ok. Now, I cd two directories down the

PDC/Net logon server
For some reason, my Linux machines
took over the net yesterday, telling
everyone they were PDC & BDC, even
though I had an NT machine listed as
PDC in both their smb.confs, had no
participation in domain browsing, etc.,
etc. The only thing I had running was
Net Logons (which I thought was needed
to have a Samba dial-in allow domain logins,
but after I turned it off, I realize I'm
wrong.

WARNING - 3Com PROBS - (re: Can't see my machine using "Network Neighbohood")
In using 3Com 905/905B's I find the drivers that
come with Windows 95/NT don't find Linux or
NBT machines properly, but upgrading to the
newest drivers at 3Com's web site fixes the
problem. No changes to any of the configuration
settings. I don't know what other cards have this
problem, but ALWAYS upgrade to the most bug-free
version of a driver and software before giving up.

How to install network apps?
I'm trying to figure out an
intelligent way to install
apps on the network server,
and be able to install once
and have all the clients use
this. However, it seems
like most installations modify
the registry and seem to
demand a client-by-client installation.
Am I missing something on this?
Can someone provide me some hints
or references to help this?

Asterisk Dialplan command "PPPD" released
Hello all!
Sirrix AG, Saarbr?cken (manufacturer of the Sirrix.PCI4S0 4-port ISDN
card for Asterisk) has released the new Asterisk dialplan command PPPD
(app_pppd). It allows to connect a Linux PPP daemon to an arbitrary
digital (ISDN) Asterisk channel to provide RAS dialin and dialout.
The PPPD command has successfully been tested with Sirrix.PCI4S0 cards
and a standard ISDN4Linux ipppd "on

using pam_winbind to authenticate PPP?
I'm trying to set up a Linux-based dialin server on our company network.
I'd like to have PPP authenticate using winbindd, if possible. I feel like
I've almost gotten it to work, but I can't quite get there. Files:
/etc/pam.d/ppp:

server signing = mandatory/required broken in 4.17.5 ?
We are using samba on RedHat 8.8. The latest samba version available for
RHEL8 is samba 4.17.5
Since samba is updated to 4.17.5 from 4.16.4 the "server signing =
mandatory" config option seems to be broken.
Nessus scans reports a vulnerability on server signing not required:

No Visible Binding for global variable

cheat.fit: no visible binding for global variable 'Zobs'
plot.jml: no visible binding for global variable 'Var1'
I see the issue has come up before, but I'm having a hard time discerning how solutions applied elsewhere would apply here. The entire code for both functions is below,

shadow:delimiter = _UTC_

Samba WINS issues over VPN
I am running Samba 3.4.8 as a PDC on Solaris 10. I recently made this
the WINS master- previously the BDC (Samba 3.0.37 on another Solaris 10
server.)
I also use Sonicwall ipsec VPN for remote access (Windows XP clients.)
The sonicwall client creates a virtual NIC on the client so that the
client can have an IP address directly on the company LAN (ie. the same
LAN as the samba

Issue using zaptel's dynamic spans.
Hi,
Is there any mailing list specifically for zaptel-users ? If yes, then,
sorry to bother you people, i could not locate it. Can anybody post a link
to it ? If not, then i hope, this is the right place to ask zaptel related
questions.
I'm using vanilla zaptel 1.4.3 on custom Linux 2.6.15.1. I've have a Redfone

samba authenticate to 2K AD?
Has anyone on this list been able to configure samba in such a way so that
it will authenticate to windows 2K acitve directory.
What I want to do is this: install samba 2.2.7 onto a Redhat linux 7.3
system, then configure samba (I think using something called smb_pam) so
that it will join the windows active directory domain.
Is such a thing possible? Has anyone here done it? I can't find
