DO NOT REPLY [Bug 2790] Add support for converting filenames into different encodings
https://bugzilla.samba.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2790
------- Comment #5 from mangoo@interia.pl 2006-03-29 04:11 MST -------
I'm just curious.
Suppose I have rsyncd running on Windows, and want to copy files from there to
a Linux machine.
The problem is that some characters (like German umlauts - ü, ö, ä etc.) are
changed to ? when saved on the Linux side.
Where should I apply this patch?

The stable rsync has had --iconv for a while now. Is there a reason this bug
isn't marked fixed? (If someone wants to pursue my idea from comment #10, they
should enter a new bug or at least narrow the summary of this one.)

I've been working on a filename-conversion solution that uses the iconv()
function. After putting a bunch of thought into various designs, I think I
have a good solution that I have coded up as a patch for the latest CVS version

Rsync with non-english characters in filenames?
Hi,
I am trying to use rsync to migrate homefolders from one server to
another. For this I use:
> rsync --rsh="ssh -l root" -vaz beaucent.ling.umu.se:/export/home/ .
Which works fine until I get to some files where the user has,
unfortunatelly, used a non-ascii character in the file name:

is support for non-ASCII filenames in rsync complete?
Hi there
Over the years there's been many people saying how files with non-ASCII
charsets got their filenames "corrupted" moving between different
systems. So I'm wondering what the current state is with rsync-3.06+?
ie I want to use rsync-3.06+ to backup WinXP+ (and MacOS?) filesystems
by using native versions of rsync clients to a remote Linux-based rsyncd
process. If I do

read.spss and encodings
Hi!
I'm having trouble with importing spss files containing non-ascii characters
(R 2.4.1, debian linux, i386). To reproduce:
Download the following file:
http://statmath.wu-wien.ac.at/data/spss/de/comphomeneu.sav
require (foreign)
Sys.setlocale (locale="C")
read.spss("comphomeneu.sav")$ARBEIT[1]
# prints:

# Levels: im B\374ro zuhause

accented characters in filenames mangled when rsyncing to a samba share
Hi folks,
I am having a problem rsyncing files with accents in the names. I've
seen similar problems reported a few times before in the archives but
they didn't seem to be referring to exactly the same problem as what I
have, and I'm not good enough at Linux to solve my problem by
generalising from the information there: sorry.
Anyway, my specific details are this. I am running rsync

Samba4 as AD, what password hash is used?
Hi,
Thank you for this answer, unfortunately I was not able to re-hash password
as they are hashed into LDB database.
First I retrieved the hash:
ldbsearch -H $sam '(cn=some user)' unicodePwd
# record 1
dn: CN=some user,OU=Users Management,DC=ad,DC=example,DC=com
unicodePwd:: COwwLgiqqaHRyhy4HxWp4A==
This "unicodePwd" attribute comes from a quick search into "user"

Samba4 as AD, what password hash is used?
Hi all,
I was wondering what kind of password encryption is used into LDB file to
store user's password.
Our users are authenticating against some OpenLDAP tree to access their
applications. We would like to add some field on this OpenLDAP to generate
Samba4 valid password when users are connecting against it, to be able then
to copy this field into our Samba4 users for they have same

updating pandoc and converting to UTF-8
Hi guys,
I need to run pandoc. (http://johnmacfarlane.net/pandoc/installing.html)
I did this:
rpm -ivh
http://dl.fedoraproject.org/pub/epel/6/x86_64/epel-release-6-8.noarch.rpm
yum install -y pandoc
This is version 1.9.4.1
They are up to 13.1.1.
How can I update to the latest? Yum doesn't have anything more that I can
see.
Also, is there a tool like 'iconv' on OS X where I can
