Result depends on order of factors in unbalanced designs (lme, anova)?
Dear R-Community!
For example I have a study with 4 treatment groups (10 subjects per group) and 4 visits. Additionally, the gender is taken into account. I think - and hope this is a goog idea (!) - this data can be analysed using lme as below.
In a balanced design everything is fine, but in an unbalanced design there are differences depending on fitting y~visit*treat*gender or

Problem(?) in strptime() -- short version
I decided my earlier email on this topic was rather long and wordy;
here's a condensed version.
I am sitting at a Solaris computer in the US/Pacific timezone.
I have a file of data having times that includes the following three values
2002-4-7 1:30:00 GMT
2002-4-7 2:30:00 GMT
2002-4-7 3:30:00 GMT
I have not been able to find a way to correctly convert these to
either of the POSIX

Daylight savings time and conversion to POSIXt (arghh!)
I have asked this question before, and received some suggestions for
work-arounds that get the job done--and they are much appreciated.
But I would still like to find out if I'm missing something, and
whether there is a direct way using POSIXt functions (as.POSIXct,
as.POSIXlt, strptime, in particular).
I have environmental data collected once per minute. Here is a subset

runaway process in 3.0.21b
Hi!
I'm running 3.0.21b on OpenBSD 3.8-stable (i386) with raidframe. Without any
apparent cause one of the smbd child processes has started to badly leak
memory (approx. 10Mb / minute) and possibly busy waiting, persistant across
reboots. The server has been running flawlessly in production for over three
months and absolutely nothing has changed on the server since it went into
production.

nested versus crossed random effects
Hi all,
I'm trying to test a repeated measures model with random effects using the
nlme library. Suppose I have two within subjects factors A, B both with
two levels. Using aov I can do:
aov.1 <- aov(y ~ A*B + Error(S/(A+B))
following Pinheiro and Bates I can acheive the analagous mixed-effects
model with:
lme.1 <- lme(y~A*B, random=pdBlocked(list(pdIdent(~1),pdIdent(~A-1),

[Bridge] bridge with ppp0, ppp1,..
hi there
i found your project and tried to bridge two ppp devices.
you say (http://bridge.sourceforge.net/faq.html) that this is possible:
... "Linux bridging is very flexible; the LAN's can be either
traditional Ethernet device's, or pseudo-devices such as PPP, VPN's or
VLAN's. The only restrictions are that the devices:" ...

smartd stalls the system on reboot
I have begun to notice that the smartd stalls my machine's boot process for
as much as 2-3 minutes while it is coming up. I have the BIOS SMART
function enabled, and I removed the bad SG400GB drive from the box
yesterday, but I think this goes back farther than that.
Why does it take so long? Is the BIOS SMART involved in this (and how)?
Also, sendmail and sm-client take 30s-2m to come up

[Mongrel?] Reload on file upload stalls process
If I just click the submit button on a file upload page, it works fine,
but if I click the browsers reload button on the submitted page (yeah, I
should redirect after a successful submission), the Mongrel ruby process
maxes out the CPU and never finishes (requiring stopping the mongrels
and killing the cpu-maxing ones). Any idea why it does this?

Download to ext3 partition stalls (sans HTML crap)
(Sorry about the duplicated mails, my mailer stinks.)
Hi ext3-gurus,
I was doing some testing of our 100 Mbit ethernet at work, and found a
weird problem which appears to be ext3 releated as far as I can tell.
The test is very simple. I use ncftp to connect to another machine
running vsftpd and download a very large file over the network. The
network is switched, and I get 8-10 MB/s transfers

tftp-hpa loads but stalls
Hello,
I am attempting pxelinux via dhcpd/tftpd. If I use the system
default tftpd daemon, then pxelinux loads but then complains about
the tsize option.
I've downloaded tftp-hpa-0.34, compiled and installed. I also
edited inetd.conf according to README.security and then reloaded inetd.
/tftpboot directory and all files and directories have nobody:nobody

Rsync stalls
I am trying to rsync a machine running CYGWIN_NT-5.2 server 1.5.24(0.156/4/2)
to another which runs FreeBSD 6.2-STABLE; both with rsync 2.6.9.
I'm trying to "pull" the files from the Cygwin machine with:
/usr/local/bin/rsync -avz --delete --delete-excluded -e "ssh"
[user]@[host]:"/cygdrive/e/Shared" /home/[host]
However, rsync stalls. This seems to be

PROBLEM: I/O stalls when running fstress against multi-device fs
Chris:
I can consistently reproduce I/O stalls when running fstress (as found
in Autotest) against a six volume btrfs filesystem mounted without
options. The volumes are independent disks from RAID controllers, and
the test systems are eight core Intel and AMD machines running current
btrfs-unstable.
The stalls occur at variable times into the runs. The affected system
ceases to do I/O

I the connection actually stalling? Can you concurrently check whether the file
is increasing in size?
Also, do large FTP or HTTP transfers exhibit the same behaviour?

[BISECT] gpxelinux.0 stalls at Trying to load: pxelinux.cfg/.....
While trying out gpxelinux.0, I realized that it didn't work in the
latest release candidate. This is what happens:
This is a screenshot from a VM: http://bsfh.ath.cx/gpxe.png
It hangs there for a long time.
I tried in two configurations:
1) Qemu KVM with tap networking, ISC dhcpd and tftp from iputils on the
host.
2) Desktop, dnsmasq from OpenWRT as dhcp/tftp server.

Is your link high-latency? Try increasing STALLTIME in scp.c a little.
