daemon() failed
A friend of mine is having an issue running sshd as a daemon. I don't have full access to this box, so troubleshooting may be difficult, but from what I can gather, the call to daemon() is failing. sshd -D works fine, but sshd -e returns "daemon() failed: Success" , which is in and of itself funny. This is Slackware 10.0, with openssh 3.8.1p1 and glibc 2.3.2. I have several

User and group ID problems when mounting.
Hi everyone, I'm using Linux kernel 2.4.29 and samba 3.0.10 with Slackware 10.1 distro and I'm having trouble getting the mount.smb to respect my uid and gid options. Whichever uid and gid I specify I get something strange like uid 147926 and gid 101. I heard someplace that this is a bug in the smbfs kernel module but in that case it has appeard after the kernel 2.4.22 since I started

Network Settings in Wine
Hi! I'm using Slackware 11 and Wine 0.9.40. The problem is, Wine is not detecting my network settings, though it(Internet) works fine in my Slack. i can access the entire network (Company's), see the sambha shares in my slack, but when i try to run "ipconfig" or "ping", i got an error saying it was trying to user ICMP and this would not work unless used as root. Pause in access of realtime file transfers when printing
Hello, I'm running Slack 8.1 and Samba 2.2.4. The mp3 I'm playing off of the server, or anything else realtime for that matter, pauses when a print job is sent to the box. I'm printing to a small cheap print server that does lpr. The pause seems to occur when my linux box sends the job to the actual print server (by the looks of my switch activity) hanging off of my printer, so the

Password authentication problems
I'm having a problem getting OpenSSH to correctly authenticate passwords. I'm doing authentication against a shadow file (/etc/shadow) because I don't have PAM installed. I'm using Slackware 7.0, OpenSSH 1.2.3, OpenSSL 0.95a, and glibc with the crypt addon. Here is the funny thing about it though. I edited the file that has the code for authenication (auth-password.c I think,

Sparc?
My 12 year old wants to learn more about servers and has memorized a lot of commands like ls, chmod, du, etc. He wants to have his own domain and server on the web and I have enough Static IP's, so why not foster this interest. I have an old ultra sparc 5. Are there any CentOS versions that support Sparc? Or recommendations? I know OpenBSD does, but I am more versed in Solaris and versions

Fwd: Vista laptop in Samba 3.3.4 domain suddenly trying to use roaming profiles?
Paul, Thank you very much for your information. I, too, had noticed that the ProfilePath and CentralPath values could be altered to point to the proper local path, and that technique at least fixed the immediate problem. Unfortunately, further review of my setup has revealed a very frustrating migration issue that I had not yet realized. The issue is very subtle and very frustrating, but I believe

Joining Windows 10 Domain Member to Samba AD/DC
Congratulations. Happy to hear you got it running. Just out of curiosity and apologies if this has been answered before, but why Slack and not Debian when general consensus is Debian is great for Samba ? Building a Samba AD on Debian is painless and takes 20m from start to finish. Anyway, glad you sort it. LP. On 11 Feb 2024 at 05:11 +0100, Mark Foley <mfoley at novatec-inc.com>, wrote:

Hello, I would like to compile the Ogg Vorbis libraries and tools on my Slackware 7.0 box. Unfortunatelly Slack is comming with gcc 2.91.66 which is not suited for compilation of these libraries and tools. I downloaded, compiled and installed in a separate directory tree gcc 2.95.3 but now I really don't know how to make the configure script see it and set it properly as the compiler to be
