rsync-2.6.2: NFS clients confused after an rsync
We use rsync to update an nfs server. After an update, we noticed that a large number of clients didn't see the updated data. It took me a while to be able to reliably reproduce this problem, but it happens on old and new versions of rysnc. It also happens across all the platforms we use here (sun/linux/netapp). This shows the problem: [Note my home directory is NFS mounted]

rsync -a doesn't copy ext3 attributes
Hi folks, I just stumbled upon the fact that rsync doesn't preserve at least the ext3 "immutable" flag - while it should do so when using -a, IMHO. Quick test case (tested on CentOS 5.5 w/ rsync 2.6.8 as well as on Fedora 13 w/ rsync 3.0.7): # touch testfile # chattr +i testfile # rsync -a testfile testfile2 # lsattr testfile* ----i----------

Printing ps pictures with transparent b'ground
Hi all I wish to create a ps file of a picture produced in R. With my limited R, I see two ways: 1. Print direct to the postscript device 2. Print to the screen, and save to ps using dev.print. I want a white (not transparent) background. Option 1 above works fine, but 2 does not: even when I say I want a white background, I get transparent; perhaps I misread the help files. Here's some R

scp forces original access permissions when owner lacks write access
Hello, I am not sure if this is a bug or a feature... When I use scp to copy a file to a filesystem which forces or masks permissions on new files (in my case a samba share) the resulting permissions depend on whether the owner had write access in the original permissions. If the owner did have write access then the copied file ends up with the permissions specified by the filesystem. If the

eval function with javascript-semantics possible in R?
Dear r-helpers, I am looking for an R-equivalent for the eval-function in javascript which can interpret a string as code on runtime, thereby allowing things like for (i in c(1:2)) { eval(items + "i") <- read.csv(eval(filename+ i), dec=","); } which would execute (with filename="testfile"): items1 <- read.csv(testfile1, dec=","); items2 <-

kerberos nfs4's principals and root access
Hai, I had it the other way around. Only root acces. I have scripted my setup and tested on debian. Look here https://secure.bazuin.nl/scripts/these_are_experimental_scripts/ setup-nfsv4-kerberos.sh If you get the file, setup-nfsv4-kerberos.sh and compair it to your setup. If you can read the bash script maybe you see something you missed. When i write as "root" its root and

update rysnc 3.0 on ubuntu 7
I am runninng rsync on Ubuntu. It was installed using apt-get install rysnc. I note that the package has not yet been updated to rysnc 3.0. I would like to update using the tar but I am confused how to update the existing installation. On this machine, I am mainly using rsync to send to a cwrsync server (which I have updated already). Can I just overwrite the rsync executable? Any help

Backup Member Server
Hello, Can someone point me to documentation on how to best backup a samba member server? I see the wiki currently does not contain one. Is it as simple as backup all shared folders with rysnc or similar that will preserve ACLS along with the smb.conf? I'm currently relying on a raid solution. Thanks. -- -James

Incremental backup with only delta into a separate file.
Hi All, I am presently doing a small POC with rsync for incremental backup and restore starategies. I have come up with certain question down the line, can anyone help me with the explanation. Used the config and ideas from: http://www.mikerubel.org/computers/rsync_snapshots/ The commands executed on two machines in sequence Machine 1: root at Andruil:~# vim testfile root at Andruil:~# ls

"force create mode" not enforced from linux client
My Samba v3.0.25b (in CentOS v5.1) has the smb.conf shown below. What I'm seeing is that "force create mode" is not enforced when accessed by a Linux CIFS client (Fedora 7). On the server, user steve has a home directory of /home/steve, and the public directory is /home/samba/public. The shares are mounted from the client fstab like this: //nemesis/steve /mnt/cifs/myhome cifs

rsync is fantastic except for one usual feature we want from it .. please help ?
Hi, Rsync is a fantastic program, and it does everything we need in terms of file transfer and syncing source and destination file directories. We do have a situation now where we need rsync to transfer the files once only from the source directory. Please let me briefly explain using a simple generic exmple: 1. At t0, we transfer f0 location A to location B 2. At t1, 10 new

[semi-OT] C7 Possible bug but I can't determine what tool has the problem
Hi all, I'm writing a script that uses rsync to sync 2 dirs on C7. I noticed a strange behaviour. I have 2 dir: src and dest. In src dir I generate a testfile with "dd if=/dev/zero of=testfile bs=1M count=100" and when I run "du -h testfile" I get the correct result. Then I sync src/ to dest/ using "rsync -avS? src/ dest/", all ok but when I run "du -h

advisory file locks in linux - do they work?
Hi - I'm trying to verify if OpenSSH/SFTP will in fact lock files with advisory file locking in Linux. I can test locking with the linux "flock" command to verify that file locking does work - but when I upload or download a file with SFTP it will not detect a lock. I'm asking about Linux specifically because about a year ago I was doing a similar process in Solaris 9 and
