Request for added functionality - tracking and blocking attacks
Somebody please forward this, if this is not an appropiate place to ask the OpenSSH developers for a new feature. As many of us have seen, any sshd left open on the internet eventually becomes the target of password guessing attacks. I am aware of tools for scanning the security logs, and manipulating iptables to block ongoing attacks, but I am not aware of a way to configure sshd itself to

Debugging a program written in the R language
>From Tom: The subject is debugging a program written in the R language, under Windows. (Sorry, but I do not know either the Apple OS or *nix.) A computer program will usually not work on the first try, if only because of the risk of typos. Instead, it must be debugged. Roughly, here is the sequence: (1) One codes a program using the R language, and stores it on the hard drive, using

General tweaking tips for wine?
Does anyone have any general tips on how to get programs to work on Wine? I hear lots of success stories for various programs which I have failed to get working on my own machine. But then again, my own version of wine is a bog-standard installation without any special adjustments made to it. What are the steps usually taken to attempt to get a program to run under Wine? Or is that too

Re: Carrara 6 on WINE 0.9.59, Ubuntu Hardy 8.04, Gnome 2.22.1...
Hi VitalBodies, I have just made the switch to Ubuntu myself, Whilst I understand I may never get Carrara to work, I have successfully installed Corel Bryce 5, Hexagon and Daz Studio 3 advanced under wine 1.2. The Wine App Database says that folks have got Eovia Carrara 5 to work with no problem but after installing this version along with the C++ runtime's, Carrara 5 under Wine will not let

OS X programs on Linux
This might turn out to be a more complicated answer than it is a question. I want to use programs for Mac OS X in Ubuntu 8.10 and was curious as to if there was something out there like Wine that would allow me to do so. This might also help. I want to use my OS X version of Photoshop CS3. Any suggestions, or should I just give up?

Mapping Samba Drives (Samba Digest 1721) (Suzanne George)
Hello happy Samba People, I use the following trick for mounting my Samba Maps at start-up at my WIN NT Workstation 4.0 (hate this beast). I use the logon Scripts that could be used by WIN NT. (See Directory : \system32\repl\import\scripts). You should give the file a "good" name (I use my Login Name for that (SVEN.BAT)). Then I use the "net use" in the Script for ex. :

How to troubleshoot network woes with Wine?
The app which I am currently trying to get to work properly (Cinema4D network rendering client - it does work 90%, depending on how you look at it) does some weird things, like receiving jobs from a server, computing them, and sending the rendered scenes back to the server (actually I don't know if it's sending them back, or if the server is fetching them; I don't even know what the

I have a windows program that requires access to some windows shares on the network. Some config files and other things reside on these shares (and must). The program won't function w/o these things, but I haven't the foggiest how to have wine "sense" or "use" the connections. Do I need to use smbfs and connect to the computer/share giving a local *nix path that

Trying to startup Wine
I have downloaded the source (wine-20011004), compiled and installed with ~/wine-20011004/tools/install.sh and am attempting to start running it. My first try, as suggested in the docs, is /windows/sol.exe from a terminal in KDE and the error message I get is: Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: I compiled and installed as root - that may have been a mistake. However, I have a /root/.wine

Running Wine as a user
Hi I've used Wine for some time now, compiled from source, from root with no problems. I now wish to run it regularly as an ordinary user. Unfortunately it's refusing to run because "the socket is not owned by you", or words to that effect. After the socket is created under /home/user/.wine/... I can give it user permissions and Wine will start, but if I stop Wine and
