Which Nvidia Card ?
I'm a recent convert after a long affair flirting with Linux, I've currently got a Radeon x1950 and I would like to get away from ATI now that I'm sporting Ubuntu 8.04 and I'm curious what Wine users recommend from Nvidia?
I can't afford the high end stuff I'm looking at Newegg in the $50 - $100 range, I run Steam Apps mostly, dabbled with WoW and WAR but neither are

Can I play any Win7 game on Linux?
Hi, I am apprehensive about buying the Windows 7 for my new desktop PC ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ig_b41uOQCg ) and pay more than 100 euros for it. I don't have enough money before I get the student loans after New Year 2012, and I was wondering if I could get Linux somewhere today or before Christmas holidays.
Before I decide, tell me, can I play any Win7 game I like on Linux, by

Tell me the truth about WINE
I'm an avid gamer, I play all kinds of games and a wide variety of specific
titles, be they on the A-list or B-list. How realistic would it be for a
person like me to rely solely on WINE for PC gaming? I understand that the
pace with which WINE can catch up is relatively quick (a few months), but a
few months is still a long time to wait if I'm itching to get started on a
new release. I

4.8-Stable DummyNet
Hi. We just opened a gaming center and have chosen to run a FreeBsd box for
our firewall. IPFW is configured at it's very basic running natd through rl0
and allowing any to any connections from the lan to the outer world. Natd
controls access to the lan.
We have a 6.0 mb/s ADSL net connection for all the gaming clients to use,
however if a gamer starts downloading a file, that file

Game is slower 2x than on Windows
Game named Istaria: Chronicles of the Gifted (http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=1972) ( MMO ) is slower
on ANY linux and ANY wine version exactly 2 times .
For example on Windows I have 40 fps and in same place 20 fps on wine,
20 fps in Windows and ~10 fps on linux.
I was trying lot of "wine tricks" without any effect.
I have also installed the most up

Gaming support with different hardware vendors (esp. ATI)
Hi all!
I recently got an ATI Radeon HD 3850 card and now noticed that with the
fglrx driver many games that look well in AppDB do not run properly on
this hardware (Supreme Commander ingame: flickering static garbage, Prince
of Persia SoT has several issues that completely garble ingame graphics).
Older games (not using shaders among other things) seem to run fine - need
to do more testing

Intel i7-940, DX58S0 motherboard, Radeon X1950 Pro video card
This computer is my main desktop machine --- an Intel i7-940 CPU and DX58S0
motherboard with a Radeon X1950 Pro video card. It's currently running Fedora 11
and working just fine.
However, I have been slowly moving all of my "computer stuff" off of Fedora
and onto Centos, and this (and my Acer Aspire One laptop) are the only Fedora
installations that I now have left.
Does anyone

The Sims
I have a copy of the Sims installed on a Win2k FAT32 partition. I know
for a fact that The Sims works under Wine (Mandrake's "Gamer" edition),
but I get an error when I try to run it. The error is as follows:
"Game cannot be started because:
There is not enough memory or hard drive space to run.
Exit now."
I do have plenty of free space and plenty of memory. Does

Direct3D natively on Linux through Gallium?
I have just read from Phoronix that Gallium is going to support native directx on Linux.
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=mesa_gallium3d_d3d11&num=1
Is it really possible?
Is this true?

quality -> bitrate
Use the -V option when encoding and you should get bitrates.

Fitting a cumulative gaussian
Dear R-Experts,
I was wondering how to fit a cumulative gaussian to a set of empirical
data using R. On the R website as well as in the mail archives, I found
a lot of help on how to fit a normal density function to empirical data,
but unfortunately no advice on how to obtain reasonable estimates of m
and sd for a gaussian ogive function.
Specifically, I have data from a psychometric function

USB Audio sound card
All-
Ah, the saga of the 1U workstation continues. So, in all my work configuring
the thing, I completely forgot about AUDIO; I only realized my mistake when I
went on a cable-measuring expedition this morning. Unfortunately, none of the
1U servers I've been looking at come with audio outputs (there aren't even
audio headers on the motherboard), and I've used the only availabnle slot

OT: Would you purchase this hardware?
I have about $1200 to spend on 2 boxes and I'd like them to be identical.
Very basic web serving, simple HTML5 video, light email serving. Looking
around NewEgg, I come across:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA65C1ZT3064
These use ECC unbuffered RAM which is expensive but I did find 8gb sticks
for under $70 each:
