Character set conversion problems with 3.0
I've just compiled Samba 3.0.0 on a Solaris 8 system (gcc, if it matters), and whenever I run anything from the samba suite, I get a series of error message about character set conversions: Conversion from UCS-2LE to CP850 not supported Conversion from UTF8 to CP850 not supported ... and about 10 more, all involving CP850 (the "standard" DOS codepage, presumably). Now,

[LLVMdev] [cfe-dev] Unicode path handling on Windows
Guys, welcome to the too weird i18n world! We, Japanese, has got suffered for multibyte charset for 20 years. I have added a comment in http://llvm.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=10348 . Of course I know, I don't think it would be a practical resolution. FYI, it seems clang can retrieve mbcs path with s/CP_UTF8/CP_ACP/g. iconv.dll in Windows
I recently built R-devel on Windows XP (sessionInfo below), and when loading libraries that require the iconv.dll was getting an error stating that 'This application has failed to start because iconv.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.'. An R-2.8.1 that I installed using the Windows installer has this dll in R-2.8.1/bin, whereas in R-devel it is still in

How to run japanese app with wine
Hi there. I'm sorry if this has been discussed before but I've searched a lot about it and couldn't find an answer so here it goes: How can I run japanese applications with wine? I've tried editing the Fonts section in .wine/config to use japanese fonts (like jis and watanabe) but the applications only display weird characters in place of the japanese chars. What do I have to do

Tuýrkish Character Set
Hello, I am new to this list. I have (and all Trukish users of Samba) trouble with Turkish charactes (iso8859-9)with Samba. I saw some character definition tables in charcnv.o (in sources). I couldn't understand the logic. A part of the table for iso8859-2 is /* MSDOS Code Page 852 -> ISO-8859-2 */ update_map("\241\244\242\364\243\235\244\317\245\225\246\227\247\365");

UTF8_LANG: a much better idea
I've found a much better solution; it's standard (in Unicode itself), simple and more flexible: Unicode language tagging. It was made for just this purpose, in fact. A technical description is at http://www.unicode.org/unicode/reports/tr27/#tag which, like all specs, makes it sound a bit more complicated than it really is. It comes down to this: mark the language of text with U+E0001

character set for Windows?
I'm using cygwin to backup files from a windows machine to a unix host with rsync. I originally uploaded the bulk of the files using a windows ftp client, and then planned on doing updates nightly with rsync. Some of the filenames have strange characters in them, such as the trademark symbol, and other characters, such as European letters. Rsync doesn't like the filenames as they exist on

rsync always gets index.html
I use to sync several servers with rsync for years now. One strange thing I still havent figured out: while rsync does its job perfectly will, it cant refuse to transfer all files with "index.html" in it, even if the files havent change. example: the following files are the same for years, but every night rsync copies them again:

unable to start when WINELOADER is set to path of winconsole
Hi all. I am wanting to run the following command from the shell :: wineconsole explorer /desktop=ajay Since I intend to launch Windows CUI executables after launching explorer, I use wineconsole; and secondly, I set WINELOADER to the path of 'wineconsole' binary. (These steps are in conjunction with the link http://www.winehq.org/docs/wine But the application just hangs, always.

codepage & character set
Hi, I migrated files from an existing NT fileserver to a new samba server. Unfortunately I did not make my homework properly and forget to set "codepage" and "character set" in the global section. Bit this was necessary for the f#*?$? German 'Umlaute' like ? ,? ,?. Now my dilemma is the following: -Files that I moved are shown in Unix correctly with ?,? etc. -In NT

Request for advice on character set conversions (those damn Excel files, again ...)
Dear list, I have to read a not-so-small bunch of not-so-small Excel files, which seem to have traversed Window 3.1, Windows95 and Windows NT versions of the thing (with maybe a Mac or two thrown in for good measure...). The problem is that 1) I need to read strings, and 2) those strings may have various encodings. In the same sheet of the same file, some cells may be latin1, some

String encoding problem
If you print: "\xc9\x82\xbf" you get "\u0242\xbf" But if you try and evaluate that string you get: > "\u0242\xbf" Error: mixing Unicode and octal/hex escapes in a string is not allowed (Probably will only happen on mac/linux with default utf-8 encoding) Hadley -- http://hadley.nz
