Ubuntu (Wubi) + Wine + Steam
Does it work? I've been trying to set up Steam under Wine for two days now but to no avail, I've got the Tahoma font, the Gecko engine and also tried with the .exe and .msi and nothing :( Using this guide (http://thepemberton.com/posts/archives/13), when I have to type "wine SteamInstall.exe -dxlevel 90 -novid" on the terminal all I get is this: > preloader: Warning:

Squeezing every last drop of performance out of DirectX
Hi Folks, I have been using Wine for some time now to run Team Fortress 2 (and other HL2 based games) on my Ubuntu system. I was previously running Ubuntu 7.10 with an Athlon64 3800+, a 7600GT (256MB of RAM), and 2GB of DDR2 333MHz. Recently I upgraded to Ubuntu 8.10 (i386) with an AthlonX2 64 6000+, an 8800GT (1GB of RAM) and 4GB of DDR 800MHz. I was really hoping for a nice performance bump

System: Pentium 4 2.6ghz, 1GB RAM, and 128mb ATI Radeon 9800 graphics card. Ubuntu 8.04, and Wine 1.1.5. Problem: After the valve/source logo screens, the mouse appears, the screen goes white, and the main menu music plays. Since there is no menu, it has to be

[Wine 1.4rc5] Team Fortress 2 crashes after assets load
Hello, I'm using Wine 1.4rc5 (because earlier versions seemed to lag rather badly when rendering pages in Steam) on kernel 3.0.0-12.20 using the (latest) 64-bit NVIDIA driver version 295.20 (installed from the file from NVIDIA) for the Quadro 160M (which runs has run TF2 just fine in the past). I understand that Team Fortress 2 and other Source games require 32-bit display driver libraries,

Hi there, I'm running Ubuntu 8.04, 32-bit. Now using Wine 1.1.17 Using Ati binary driver 9.2 for x1600 series I'm experiencing problems with Left 4 Dead. Half Life 2 fails to run in recent releases
I'm stuck with wine-0.9.19. Each release since then seems to run Steam okay, but then when Steam launches HL2, it fails to load at various points. Anyone else noticed this or know what's going on? If someone could make a suggestion for which debug level to enable that would be helpful. Thanks.

Steam always locks up within a few dozen seconds of starting.
I have a brand new computer with a fresh install of Gentoo linux and wine. I have been able to install and run Steam, but Steam itself always seems to freeze some short time after starting it. Usually this takes place at the "Connecting account. . ." dialogue, but every now and then I can actually get a game of HL2 loading. I have never got as far as the HL2 menu being active. It does

Poor wine performance
Hello, I wanted to give wine a test (never used it before), so I went forth and installed it on my - humble but not too lousy system: CPU: Intel Pentium M 1.80GHz Memory: 512MB Graphics controller: ATI RV350 (Mobility Radeon 9600 M10) While I had Windows 2000 on it, I was able to run the good old HalfLife2 pretty nice, so I thought I'd give it a shot. HL2 crashes, when I break some glass!
I am running wine 1.10 with the latest nVidia drivers, the 180 series. Now, everytime I shoot at the glass, or somebody breaks it, hl2 crashes without any unusual output. Just all it does is exit. Even if I throw a grenade, and go away, it will crash when I return to the place and make it load the picture. Any help will be appreciated!

Team Fortress 2 Issues
Hello there, After downloading the latest version of wine, latest graphics drivers and install Steam through PlayOnLinux, I tried to launch Team Fortress 2. The initial Valve sound played and then the menu soud, but there was absolutely no video/display. Checking the processes list, hl2.exe was still running, so obviously something is going wrong here. My system should be fine, as I used to run
