Centos 6: howto install and run KDE
On my laptop, I have not been able to get KDE to run; I always get gnome. I installed selecting KDE, and I tried yum groupinstall, which appeared to work, but I still get gnome running. BTW, I boot to level 3, and run startx. Thanks for your suggestions. Mike.

Smth. about "Icon=" option in .desktop files created by WINE
When I install some Win32 application using WINE, it creates associated menu item file for it, located at ~/.local/share/applications/wine/Programs/***Program title***/***Program shortcut.desktop***. Well, inside this file I see option named "Icon", where path to some icon is set. Sometimes this path points to some PNG image file, but sometimes it points to something I don't have a

Accessing Android phones on CentOS 7
Hi, My standard Linux desktop is based on a personal blend of CentOS 7 with KDE 4.14 and various add-ons from third-party repositories like EPEL and Nux-Dextop. After a brief stint on OpenSUSE Leap 15.0, this is what I use on my workstation and on my laptop. And this is also what I install on my client's machines, just like I did in our local school's computer room. I'm currently

CentOS 6 KDE: remove default icons
On my newly installed CentOS 6 I am running KDE (I think; I selected it in the setup, but how would I know?). It has three default icons: Computer; Root's Home; Trash. I do not see them in /root/Desktop. How can I remove them? Thanks, Mike.

run R script automatically by double-clicking WinXP desktop icon
I've written a simple script that does some surveillance analysis on daily counts of walk-in clinic visits, for our county health department. (Actually, Michael Hohle's surveillance package does all the work; I just customized it a little to work with the way our data are recorded.) The output consists of a graph and a little table. My colleague will run it once in a while, on

How to replace application icon?
I've installed Tournament Indicator (poker hand analyser) but instead of the normal program icon, it has assumed the wine default wineglass icon. I know the location of the icon....so how do I assign that icon to the desktop?

Wine 1.0 rc3 systray icon malfunction
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: RIPEMD160 Hi all, I noticed that my Windows application's systray icon no longer docks into my KDE's systray. (Windows application's systray icon shows up as a standalone window now.) This occurred only after my upgrade from rc2 to rc3 just now. Windows application: uTorrent Desktop environment: KDE 3.5.9 (Ubuntu Hardy) I saw that there is a

R 2.15.2 still missing two files useful with the X11 icon patch
Congrats on getting 2.15.2 out on schedule. Debian builds have been uploaded. It is my understanding that Phil's patch for the X11 logo -- so promimently featured as the first item in the NEWS file for the release -- offers more when two extra files are supplied. I have supplied these for the Debian test release, for our 2.15.1-* releases and again now. We install these files as

Alert icon for yum
Hi all. I have a simple question: CentOS relies mostly on "yum" to keep systems up to date, although I understand that like on RHEL, "up2date" is also available. On my system I've run both KDE and GNOME as Graphical Desktops under X (though I presently run GNOME), and I've noticed that there is an applet called "CentOS Network Alert Icon" (from the

CentOS 7 + KDE : Dolphin weirdness
Hi, I'm running CentOS 7 + KDE on my workstation. Since the latest big batch of updates, Dolphin behaves a bit weirdly. When I download a .zip archive and then right click and "Extract here", the extracted files don't show. I have to hit F5 to refresh the current directory view and display the new files. nfs and permissions
My CentOS box is my server for data and some services, including nfs shares. On my laptop I have folderviews displaying two directories on the server, via nfs mounts. An fstab line mounts each, such as: 192.168.0.40:/home /mnt/borg2_home nfs nosuid, exec,rw,bg,soft, intr 0 0 From the folderview I have no problem accessing the files and directories. Now comes the problem. I use kontact, with

Duplicate Icons on Desktop after Upgrade
Hi, I'm recently upgraded to samba-3.0.23d from 3.0.21 on an OpenBSD 4.0 server. I'm using folder redirection to redirect the Application Data, Desktop, My Documents, and Favorites folders off to /profiles/username on the server. Two users now have duplicate file icons on their desktops. For example, if there is a file named test.doc in the /profiles/username/Desktop directory on

CentOS 7 + MATE : Folder contents not refreshed in file manager
Hi, I just migrated my workstation running CentOS 7 from KDE to MATE. It looks like I'm having the same problem with the Caja file manager than with Dolphin. Folder contents don't get refreshed automatically, and I have to hit F5. For example, when I download a file (say, a compressed archive) from the Internet, I have to hit F5 to see the file in Caja. And when I extract the archive, I

CentOS 6: Making KDE Default
I learned from Anne that if I boot to level 5, after I enter the username, can select Gnome or KDE. I note that the default is always Gnome. How can I make the default KDE? How can I get KDE with startx after booting to level 3? Thanks, Mike.
